I literally just swapped my ultra limited rear shocks out for some old ikon shocks off an old sportster just prior to seeing your video. They are a 12” shock, inch shorter than stock ultra shock, but the ride is just so much smoother. For the price of old shocks sitting in shed, well worth the spanner time. 👍

I bought my 2020 SGS in early July and with camping gear the stock shocks worked fine on the right setting. I noticed how harsh the ride was riding solo though and have been looking at upgrades. All are way out of my budget right now. Anyway fast forward to now (Sep) and having watched your vlog I thought I would try the ebay option. What a fantastic result. I got 13" ex Sportster shocks for £40 and installed them on the softest setting of 3 notches, the ride height was just as you described with 1" of sag. Im about 220lbs so they did bottom out on large ruts or speed bumps, but after changing to the middle of the 3 setting these shocks do the trick 100%. Youve probably saved me £1000 as I was going to pull the trigger on some Legend Revo's after saving up the dosh.....thank you so much for yet another top tip sir. Love the channel, been subscribed since I got my first bike, an Iron 883 back in 2016, thanks again

Just found some Sportster 5 position shocks on my EGC. Much cheaper alternative. Took it around the block and did some adjusting on the fly. Feels pretty good so far. Removed the air ride shocks. The right rear shock apparently wasn’t holding air. Ride was pretty bumpy. Thanks for showing us this.

Thanks for the helpful video I have a 2019 street glide and I got the same problem, Can you tell me the part # for those 330 mm shocks
@MyMotorcycleObsession3 жыл бұрын
Good tip! I actually just upgraded my Dyna to Legend Revo A shocks, it's life changing! Now the seat doesn't slap my but going down the dirt roads. One problem I had is that Legend recommends a 13 inch shock instead of a 12 inch shock. When you sit on the bike it's the same height as the stock shocks, but when you get off it raises the bike up an extra inch. The problem was that the bike felt like it was going to fall over on the kickstand because of the steeper lean angle. So I bought a kickstand that was one inch longer, then the problem was that the kickstand in the up position rested against my plastic belt guard, not safe at all. So I had to buy a custom kickstand bumper. Didn't seem like that bumper was very secure on the bike so I glued it on with silicone sealant. Now my bike is perfect, didn't expect to have the kickstand problems though, something to keep in mind... Next on my list is replacing the rear engine mount, hopefully that new kickstand bumper doesn't get in the way LOL!

Hi Kevin I hope this message finds you well, Update on shock installation. I actually couldn`t find a decent pair of OEM 13in. Sportster shocks locally. So I purchased 13in. Drag Specialties Sportster version. After the install they had fairly decent sag but raised my 2017 Street Glide 1in. higher. Not what I was looking for so I purchased the Drag Specialties 11 1/2in same series shock for Sportsters Low. Installed them this afternoon and test drove the bike this evening. I worried they might bottom out but not even once and I made the loop around some rough roads. I would say the ride is 80% better and the 11 1/2in lowered the bike to 8 3/4in measurement from the concrete to the lowest point on the rear fender when the bike is on the kickstand. So I`m very happy now with a better ride and more feet on the ground. If I had not viewed your video who knows what expense I would have been into so thanks for that. I hope we can chat again at some point. Cheers gunner

Hi buddy, ... the name's Del, not Kevin btw! ...Am really glad this worked for you, it's a great cheap fix for a ridiculous problem that the factory should hold their hands up to... the OEM shocks simply don't work at all unless the rider's 400lbs, or carrying concrete slabs in the bags!... hardly conducive to good handling on a bike they market as a 'good handling bike'... anyway, I love your straightforward initiative when you couldn't find some old ones, you have the benefit of brand new shocks with no wear and as you said, a bike that now works for you far better! Thanks for your feedback buddy.

Del i have a Sporster 48 with rock hard suspension- I’ve just booked to have Ohlins fitted in a couple weeks. Is there a similar thing that I could do?
@johnrodgers19522 жыл бұрын
G'day Mate thanks for the great advice, I often ride my street glide solo but also do some touring with the missus so I suppose the sporty shocks will not work for me, will most Harley shocks fit? I was thinking if I fitted some wide Glide or other model shocks that would be heavier than a sporty would they work for both solo and 2 up touring?
@Moonfleet412 жыл бұрын
I use my StreetGlide with my wife on the back and the shocks set to their stiffest pre-load and they're absolutely fine, but if by 'touring' you mean carrying luggage as well, and depending on your combined body weights, you may just find they bottom out on the deepest bumps, so yes it's logical that perhaps shocks from a Dyna may fit, but there's no exact science to it, it's a case of just trying it out and seeing what works, just like I did... the best part is that OEM shocks are everywhere for sale for cheap money!

Hi Kevin : Quick question when you installed the 13in Sportster shocks with the sag they created, when you Sit on your bike Does it lower the bike with your weight? I would be happy with that. It`s a 2017 Street Glide and when it`s on the kick stand it measures 9 3/4 in from the concrete to the lowest tip of the rear fender I`m looking for 8 3/4in. If I`m sitting on it will the sag give me 8 3/4in.? Thanks again sorry to be a pain. Cheers gunner
@Moonfleet412 жыл бұрын
Hey Gunner, simple answer, yes it will, when you mount the shocks they're already 30mm longer than the rock hard factory shocks which don't move at all, even when you sit on the bike, as you know... but the extra 30mm of height on the Sportster shocks sags when you lower it off the jack, leaving the bike standing at exactly the same factory height as you currently have... with the added bonus of what you're looking for, which is when you sit on it, it will sag at least another inch under your weight... you have 3 suspension pre-load positions, I only ever found it bottom out once when I was on the lowest setting and had a pillion on the back, but twisted the pre-load collar up to the 3rd position and even with a pillion and some weight in the bags, it didn't bottom again... you will most certainly get an inch lower to the ground in day to day riding... which you'd only get from the factory shocks if you weigh 400lbs... good luck with it, let us know you get on, all the best Del

Hi Del installed the 2020 Iron progressive shocks 11 1/2 in on my 2017 Street. Had them set at 3 points and was bottoming out or hitting the fender? I don`t know which so I set them at 6 points and it got worse. These shocks had to be installed upside down because the saddle bag was hitting the shock. So I did`nt get what I wanted. 1 inch lower with a softer ride is what my goal is. Did your 13in Sportster shocks lower your bike? Do you have the OEM part number for the 13in you installed? Cheers

I think you've identified your problem buddy, your 11" shocks are too short.. with the 13" shocks, they may be the same standing height as the factory SG shocks, but the difference is they sag, so if possible, locate yourself some basic 13" shocks (330mm) from an 883R if possible, and they'll work perfectly... they'll neither hit the saddlebags, or bottom out, unless you are a heavy rider. Good luck with it, hope you can sort it out.

@@Moonfleet41 Hi Kevin thank you for your speedy reply. Appreciate your knowledge and insight. I`ll be on the lookout for 13inch Sportster shocks but honestly I have not seen many current ones just old very used and pitted ones. But I`ll wait to secure a nice pair eventually. Thx again for your help. gunner

If I’m not mistaken those come with 12 inch shocks which will give a stiffer ride. My 2014 Ultra Limited had 13 inch stock air shocks which sucked. I switched to the 13 inch Harley Davidson premium hand adjustable shocks and couldn’t be happier.

Interesting fix! I ride 2 up 90% of the time, and the ride is still horrible. When I do ride alone, the ride is almost unbearable. I'm recovering from a slipped disc too, which doesn't help! How do you think the sportster shocks would fare riding 2 up? I'm about 13 stone, and the missus around 8.5 stone
@Moonfleet412 жыл бұрын
Hi there.. We're about the same combined weight as you both, and with the sportster shocks in the third position (full preload), then don't bottom out or wallow at all.. so unless you're carrying paving slabs on your boxes, you should be fine.. If i ride solo, the full preload is ok too, not hard or harsh, but twist them down a bit and they're really plush..! Hope that helps. !

Excellent topic for us lighter riders (I'm 140#) at 5"4 with riding boots! and yea, I finally see how pervasive the issue is.. I bought a set of used 12" base Olins for my Street Glide, Now I need to address the Rear of my Road King that coming home tomorrow for the first time. It has 13" shocks (but they seem to sag slightly better than the 12" OEMs that were on my St Glide), but I do want to lower the bike about 1/2 inch overall, or start out at 12 1/2 after the bike is set on the ground without a rider, and also be able to adjust in in the sweet spot range for my typical type rides.. Here is my question Delboy.. at your lowest setting of the 330mm sportster shocks, I see you got good sag (at your heavier weight) but did you bottom out on one, some or many reasonably large bumps? As reference, in a 6 hour ride, I might feel I found at least one bump that I think I bottomed out on..
@Moonfleet412 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy... You are right, this is pervasive, im surprised that Harley haven't dressed this as a recall, the factory shocks are simply useless ! unless you're 400lbs or haul concrete around everywhere with you, you're never going to make these factory shocks even twitch, let along function properly.! To answer you question, at my weight 170lb, i never had them bottom out on bumps, im sure that if i went and found a huge daft pot hole i could make it slam out... but who rides like that, i value my bike and my back..!! so riding solo, NO, i never had a problem... but once i carried a pillion, i did find that on the lowest / softest setting, they would bump stop now and again.. so i set them to the highest setting for 'two-up' riding, and never had a single problem again..! Hope that helps you sir.. good luck with it and ride safe. Del.

@Delboy's Garage following up on this, I've been searching the Internet for Sportster 883 shocks, but they come different lengths. Is it your opinion, that for this swap to work, they should be 330 mm? Just wondering because not only am i a light rider, I'm a short rider too. Having the street glide an inch lower would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

I believe its more about marketing for HD. Just like everything else they have an “upgrade” available on their shelf to sell. This is much more prevalent now that they are partnered ohlins/screaming eagle for top suspension replacement. Thats my take on the terrible stick shocks

Hey Del so glad you’re doing well. For what it’s worth, you look great! I’m only 5’3” and weigh 127 pounds (I’m a girl and sorry for the imperial measurements). Anyway, I’m riding a 2019 ultra classic limited low and it’s a TANK. with 13” shocks. I’m wondering if you think I can use 11.5” sportster shocks. I’d like it to sit a bit lower and have some cushion. What are your thoughts brother?
@Moonfleet413 жыл бұрын
Hey Twyla, I'm impressed that you can ride an Ultra at 5'3", that's some achievement as they're huge.! So im guessing yours is an M8 with the same shocks as this bike had?, 13" you'll retain the same ride height, but if you want the back lowered then shorter shocks will achieve that. Usually, shorter shocks for lowering are also harder to prevent bottoming out, but sportster shocks aren't harder, and could cause the bike to ground out, so you would have to try this for yourself to see if it works as ive not tried that myself so have no experience of the results.. the very best route for you would be an Air shock system you can fine tune yourself... but they are expensive.. Hope that helps you and good luck.

Thanks Del. I’m going to try the sporty shocks. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thank you so much for responding. I have been watching your videos for many years. Good to know that even though you’re a full-time big shot now with fancy tools, you still care about us little people. You’re the best! 😉
@ut1004bp2 жыл бұрын
@@twylabowman3489 How did that work out? I thinking starting out with 11 1/2 inch sportster shocks would lower too much and bottom out too quick, I would guess the 330mm like he used would compress or sag on the ground without a rider, about right..

What's the difference in suspension travel between the two Shocks. I.e do the Shocks run out of travel or does the tyre hit the rear guard first
@Grumpyoldman60- Жыл бұрын
So how will they respond to a heavy rider (250 LBS) and passenger or luggage. Love the idea.
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
You shouldn't need this modification at all if you're a heavier rider and carry luggage.. the whole point of it is for lighter riders riding empty and the springs not moving... i imagine yous will work normally under heavier load unless you have it cranked up too hard.!!

With mine SGS and these shocks, we total about the same weight if maybe a tad more then you both, and my bike rides just fine on the third preload setting, never bottoms out and lots of soft absorption over bumps..!

Good idea. However, what happens when you do actually load the bike down with luggage and a passenger?
@Moonfleet417 ай бұрын
If your bike bottoms out at that point, then that's a sure sign you need to keep the standard factory shocks... if you're going this route, it's because you load your bike light, if you load your bike heavy, you need to go the factory route, but if you do both, then you need air ride!

Well maybe it was just bad luck but I put sportster shocks on my streetglide and they failed the same day ( blew out). I weigh 200lbs and had no tour pack nor was there anything in the bags. Just beware they may not work, maybe I weigh to much but the stock shocks don’t even sag a bit when I sit on it nor do they move when I hit bumps it’s like riding a log down the road
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
For shocks to blow seals, but not bottom the springs indicates that it was nothing to do with weight, but faulty shocks.. perhaps the shocks you fitted were not the right ones, (Need to be 330mm from an 883R or similar) or perhaps were just past their best?.. ive now fitted three sets to SGS's, and all of them working happily and giving great ride feel..!
