I literally just swapped my ultra limited rear shocks out for some old ikon shocks off an old sportster just prior to seeing your video. They are a 12” shock, inch shorter than stock ultra shock, but the ride is just so much smoother. For the price of old shocks sitting in shed, well worth the spanner time. 👍

I bought my 2020 SGS in early July and with camping gear the stock shocks worked fine on the right setting. I noticed how harsh the ride was riding solo though and have been looking at upgrades. All are way out of my budget right now. Anyway fast forward to now (Sep) and having watched your vlog I thought I would try the ebay option. What a fantastic result. I got 13" ex Sportster shocks for £40 and installed them on the softest setting of 3 notches, the ride height was just as you described with 1" of sag. Im about 220lbs so they did bottom out on large ruts or speed bumps, but after changing to the middle of the 3 setting these shocks do the trick 100%. Youve probably saved me £1000 as I was going to pull the trigger on some Legend Revo's after saving up the dosh.....thank you so much for yet another top tip sir. Love the channel, been subscribed since I got my first bike, an Iron 883 back in 2016, thanks again

Just found some Sportster 5 position shocks on my EGC. Much cheaper alternative. Took it around the block and did some adjusting on the fly. Feels pretty good so far. Removed the air ride shocks. The right rear shock apparently wasn’t holding air. Ride was pretty bumpy. Thanks for showing us this.

Good tip! I actually just upgraded my Dyna to Legend Revo A shocks, it's life changing! Now the seat doesn't slap my but going down the dirt roads. One problem I had is that Legend recommends a 13 inch shock instead of a 12 inch shock. When you sit on the bike it's the same height as the stock shocks, but when you get off it raises the bike up an extra inch. The problem was that the bike felt like it was going to fall over on the kickstand because of the steeper lean angle. So I bought a kickstand that was one inch longer, then the problem was that the kickstand in the up position rested against my plastic belt guard, not safe at all. So I had to buy a custom kickstand bumper. Didn't seem like that bumper was very secure on the bike so I glued it on with silicone sealant. Now my bike is perfect, didn't expect to have the kickstand problems though, something to keep in mind... Next on my list is replacing the rear engine mount, hopefully that new kickstand bumper doesn't get in the way LOL!

Hi Kevin I hope this message finds you well, Update on shock installation. I actually couldn`t find a decent pair of OEM 13in. Sportster shocks locally. So I purchased 13in. Drag Specialties Sportster version. After the install they had fairly decent sag but raised my 2017 Street Glide 1in. higher. Not what I was looking for so I purchased the Drag Specialties 11 1/2in same series shock for Sportsters Low. Installed them this afternoon and test drove the bike this evening. I worried they might bottom out but not even once and I made the loop around some rough roads. I would say the ride is 80% better and the 11 1/2in lowered the bike to 8 3/4in measurement from the concrete to the lowest point on the rear fender when the bike is on the kickstand. So I`m very happy now with a better ride and more feet on the ground. If I had not viewed your video who knows what expense I would have been into so thanks for that. I hope we can chat again at some point. Cheers gunner

Hi buddy, ... the name's Del, not Kevin btw! ...Am really glad this worked for you, it's a great cheap fix for a ridiculous problem that the factory should hold their hands up to... the OEM shocks simply don't work at all unless the rider's 400lbs, or carrying concrete slabs in the bags!... hardly conducive to good handling on a bike they market as a 'good handling bike'... anyway, I love your straightforward initiative when you couldn't find some old ones, you have the benefit of brand new shocks with no wear and as you said, a bike that now works for you far better! Thanks for your feedback buddy.

@Moonfleet413 жыл бұрын
Sure thing Steven, it's all about the weight of the rider, I've a buddy twice my weight and said his Street Glide rides like a Lincoln town car, but then he's pushing down on it twice as hard as I am, in some ways it's kinda my own fault and any ride in my position, we're effectively 'too light' for a bike like this, like driving around with an empty pick up truck, they're never gonna be comfortable, so I'm 180lbs, if your buddy is my weight or less, see what he thinks!
@stevenferraro39573 жыл бұрын
That's the plan. It seems like Harley sets up the touring models for us big fat Americans. My 2011 street had "air adjustable" rear suspension, and I tiped the scales at about 220 back then so the rear felt fine. All except the notorious wobbly rubber mount swing arm/trans configuration. BTW good to see your getting on the mend!
@Moonfleet413 жыл бұрын
@@stevenferraro3957 Yeah i never understood that idea of bolting the swing arm to a rubber mounted trans... on the M8 tourers they're now firmly bolted to the frame and rock rigid, no more weaving in long bends..

Good idea. However, what happens when you do actually load the bike down with luggage and a passenger?
@Moonfleet419 ай бұрын
If your bike bottoms out at that point, then that's a sure sign you need to keep the standard factory shocks... if you're going this route, it's because you load your bike light, if you load your bike heavy, you need to go the factory route, but if you do both, then you need air ride!

@Moonfleet413 жыл бұрын
Well it works on mine Mark.. does yours ride almost rigid?, do you find it bangs hard over pot holes?, do you want more rear shock movement?.. if so mate, then for what a pair of ex-Sporty shocks cost, bolt them on and see..! Mine rides ten times better now and for £50.!

I love this mod! Mind sharing what the torque spec was on the bolts?

This will make the rear end softer but Sportster shocks are not designed for the weight of a touring bike. The reboumd won't work correctly and you could end up with a bouncy rear end. Ordering aftermarket shocks that are setup for your weight on your specific bike is the best way to go.

'''Ordering aftermarket shocks that are setup for your weight on your specific bike''", of course that's the way to go, but David that will cost you a fortune, and this is a suggestion you may use if you're not able to afford that, moreover mate, I said exactly what you did in the video, that they are set up for a lighter bike and as a lighter rider, that's what I need and whatever you may theorise, they actually work in practice, I've done 200 miles on them now in town and countryside and they're 10 times better than standard... so they work!

Hey buddy, good to hear form you, and it's great to be back. i guess this suspension solution could work for any bike that's heavy and oversprung, most large capacity bike have a smaller sibling in the range where that suspension may provide a solution. Take care buddy and have a good week.

Hey Del...question - any specific year on the 883 shocks to swap. I have a 2020 electra glide, and my left rear shock crapped. Wanting to replace the rear shocks and came across your video. Could save some serious $$ on your "fix" Thanks

So how will they respond to a heavy rider (250 LBS) and passenger or luggage. Love the idea.
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
You shouldn't need this modification at all if you're a heavier rider and carry luggage.. the whole point of it is for lighter riders riding empty and the springs not moving... i imagine yous will work normally under heavier load unless you have it cranked up too hard.!!

Del ! How the hell did you suss this one out ? 😂 totally agree with your opinions and your solution 👍 Harley suspension has always been a problem due to the weight of the bastards and we all come in different weights and sizes and to find the optimum suspension range is down to the individual rider ! I replaced my fxdwg with progressive suspension fore and aft ! I know they are not top of the range shocks but got rid of that wallowing around long corners! Great video mate ! 💪

Thanks Roy, I think it must be impossible to create a suspension set up that caters for every single weight, but I think they have to err on the side of caution and cover heavyweight use, if nothing else... and anyway Harley Davidson know that we all modify our bikes and that there are plenty of options available!

@@Moonfleet41 totally agree Harley’s are a personal thing ! They are like a blank canvas ! Leaving it to the owners to personalise as they want ! I think I’ve done everything I can do on mine and looked into port and polishing the heads ! But the angles in the ports are at right angles , so that would be a waste of time 😂 I’ve already put a 42 mikuni with an Arlen ness big sucker kit on it ! But at the end of the day it’s a Harley ffs ? Not a Honda 😂 but soo much fun as you know
