Is there a possible connection between Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's, Sherlock Holmes stories, and the tactics of these moonshiners and cattle rustlers?

They're apparently not that smart if they couldn't think that one day someone might go looking for their lost cow! I would have created shoes that resembled Wild animals tracks. Or I might have developed and worn something akin to snowshoes in order to leave virtually no footprint behind
