A swooning Ronny (Nicolas Cage) tries to convince Loretta (Cher) that playing it safe won't make her happy.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When there's a full moon over Brooklyn, anything can happen, and everything happens in the neighborhood where widowed bookkeeper Loretta Castorini (Cher) lives. First, Loretta agrees to marry a man she does not love, Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), simply because he knows how to propose properly. Before the wedding can take place, Cammareri must visit his dying mother in Sicily. In his absence, Loretta is supposed to try to patch up the differences between Johnny and his brother, bakery operator Ronny Cammareri (Nicolas Cage). Having never forgiven Johnny for indirectly causing the accident that crippled him, Ronny flies into a rage whenever his brother's name is mentioned. He does, however, fall for Loretta like a ton of bricks. After a torrid affair, Loretta tries to avoid Ronny out of respect to Johnny, but he's just too fascinating to resist. Meanwhile, Loretta's father (Vincent Gardenia) is fooling around with his mistress Mona (Anita Gillette), while Loretta's mother (Olympia Dukakis) is wooed by a college professor (John Mahoney). These brief flings are forgiven and forgotten, but there's still the delicate situation of Loretta being in love with her future brother-in-law. Man, this scene came to mind two days ago. I saw Moonstruck in the theater in 1987, one of the best romance comedies of that decade. It had Cage's breakthrough, remarkably being only 23 at time and playing a 40ish Cher's love interest without showing the huge age gap. Four stars.

I love this move so much. The quotes, such as this one, are so wise, and really make you think. I'd love to be Loretta: to find adventure, true love, joy. Somebody on Twitter the other day told me I look like I'll die alone. It was unkind, and although I didn't show it at the time, it hurt my feelings. It reminded me of how badly I would get teased for my looks in middle school, before I grew into them and became a woman men considered to be exceptionally pretty. But, those voices stuck in my head, telling me how worthless I was, and it caused me to settle. I'm married, but, I'm not happy. I have rarely felt anything special, and I'm getting older now. Sorry, to whomever is reading this crap, LOL!! I didn't mean to unload here; you can bill me for the therapy. 😉 I just want to feel those stirrings in my heart again, before I die. It's the reason I've chosen to go to India and Nepal in a couple years. Live life, love "the wrong people" if you feel it, be goofy! Take chances; don't let opportunities slip by you. Don't settle! Don't live a life that's someone else's idea of how or what you should be. Pray often; God is always there to guide, protect, and love. Be kind. The comfort zone can be quite alluring. It goes hand in hand with inertia; very difficult to break those invisible chains, but once it's done, you ask yourself why you didn't do this a long time ago. This has been my experience, at least. I'm not one for overused clichés, but, there are a couple that I think are solid nuggets of wisdom. One of them is, "We miss 100% of the shots we don't take." So simple, yet so profound. I've rarely regretted taking my shot; it's the shots I was too timid/busy/anxious to take that I regret. A couple sometimes hit me first thing in the morning, and I wish I could frontload a few more years back onto my life, go back, and do it to it. Thank you so much for the understanding, and for the interesting & useful analogy! Definitely something to think about. I know that this is beside the point, but his accent is awful. But Cher--oh my goodness. What a titan! She even has that moment that's SO Olympia Dukakis, and you can really really buy that they're mother and daughter. Ughk. What a film.
