This is one of my favorite movies. I loved the scene when Rose and Loretta are having breakfast and Johnny calls from Palermo. When they hang up Rose asks Loretta how Johnny's mother is and Loretta says she's dying but I could still hear her big mouth. This movie seemed so authentic. And the casting for this movie was perfect!!

That line was famously first uttered by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, the notoriously venomous Washington, D.C. social arbiter, hostess, and daughter of TR. It's been memorialized on countless pillows, napkins, notecards, etc., decades before this movie was ever written. Mr. Harling, the film writer, merely appropriated it.

Happy Happy Birthday Miss Dukakis! You are such a good actress! I don't see enough now. Today is also the 80th birthday of John Mahoney your wonderful co star in MOONSTRUCK! He was such a terrific actor! In a movie full of wonderful lines and scenes like CASABLANCA, my favorite are the scenes between you and him. I wish there had been more.

I once attended a re-screening of Moonstruck at an independent theater in New York City. There was one showing only, as it was part of a film festival covering the movies of Norman Jewison. At the end of the film, both Mr. Jewison and Ms. Dukakis went up and sat for a conversation and also took questions for the audience. There were probably less than 100 people in the audience but we all felt as if she was talking directly to us. She was gracious and kind and generous. She spoke about the personal impact the film had on her. Notice how on this video she makes a very short pause to register the emotion of going in credit card debt to cover her daughter's college to having no such worries. Only parents and people who have carried heavy credit card balances for true reasons understand that pause and how your throat constricts when you remember those moments. Everyone on that film was perfectly cast. I dislike Nicholas Cage but his newness and lack of talent play perfectly into that part. I read somewhere that the grandpa with the dogs was brought in from Italy. Everytime he is on, he steals the scene with a look or a gesture. I watch this movie every couple of years and catch parts of it when it's on TV. I also keep a running dialogue with a friend where we only say lines of the movie to one another. I have the same thing with Goodfellas and my cousin E. Cheers to the magic of well written and well acted films.

God Bless this woman! What a phenomenal talent. Not only in Moonstruck and Steel Magnolias, but also in 1995's Jeffrey. She plays the mother of a pre-operative transexual lesbian son. She says, "When I was pregnant with you what did I do? Did I tilt-a-whirl? Did I bungee jump?" She says she became proud of her child watching the summer Olympics. She says " I saw these parents crying and waving flags. I said to myself, if they could be proud of their kids just because they could stand on their heads in the deep end...I could be proud of mine." Classic and well remembered Olympia moment. Rest in peace, dear lady. You did us all proud!
