I'll tell you our mooring ball secret. We take a fifty foot dock line and cleat it off at the bow. Then, I run it back to the stern outside of the lifelines. Then all I have to do is pull the stern up near the ball, hook it with the boat hook, pull it up and run the line through it. Then I just walk the line up to the bow and take the slack out and cleat it off. We used to carry a Whaler, too (an 11' tender). We now have a Whaler 13 knock off, a Dell Quay Dory 13, that we call "the Waller". I'm just over inflatables, we like having a real boat for our dingy! Enjoyed your video!
@tryingnottosink91074 жыл бұрын
That is a great way of doing it. Our problem is, we do not have a walkway around the boat. It stops at the door to the helm. We decided to keep the Whaler, now that we figured out a way to get it raised with less effort.

Hi lynn, what i use to do is connect a smaller line to my bow cleat,then run it back aft. when i approached the mooring ball i would loop it thru the eye ing and then just walk it up too the bow and connect to a larger line and pull it thru the ring . way easier and less chance of missing it .
@tryingnottosink91074 жыл бұрын
That is a good idea but I do not know if it would work for us. Our walkway does not run from aft to bow.

Pick the mooring line up from the side or stern, which is much easier to catch, then tie a line to the mooring line loop and walk your line up to the bow as Ed reverses away a bit until the bow is facing the ball. Then you can attach. Mantus also makes a great mooring shackle which allows you to clip, rather than tie, to the mooring loop. Makes life easy on a bigger motor yacht.
@tryingnottosink91074 жыл бұрын
Lyn does pick it up from mid ship. We wish we could do stern but our walkway does not go all the way to the stern. It stops mid ship. We had a lot of difficulty in St Augustine be because, at the time we were mooring, the current was running stron and I was having a hard time keeping us in place. Think we need a little more practice. Thanks for watching!
@rabukan58424 жыл бұрын
Yes, each boat is different. The more you practice on your boat, the better you’ll get at figuring the best for your particular situation. I prefer anchoring on overnights. I have a Mantus and that anchor sets immediately and will reset just as fast. I’ve seen too many moorings break free. I no longer trust them.

It's much better to pass 2 lines through the mooring pendant...one from each side of your bow. That way the line doesn't constantly "saw" back and forth through the thimble of the mooring. Essentially you make a bridle from each bow cleat.
@tryingnottosink91074 жыл бұрын
We often do exactly that. Some of the mooring fields require it.

Hi. No, we are in Philly until May. I am a tax accountant and work during the tax season.
@ranganuiaotearoa83244 жыл бұрын
a much easier way to pick up a mooring is: 1) Get a strong rope (10mm) at least twice as long as your boat 2) Tie one end to the mooring post/cleat at the bow 3) Pass the rope through where your mooring/anchor rope goes at the bow 4) Take the rope to your stern 5) Reverse up to the mooring with you standing on the boarding platform 6) Put the rope through the eye of the mooring and then take it back to your bow 7) use your winch to wind in the rope which will bring the mooring up to your cleat. Easy!
@tryingnottosink91074 жыл бұрын
That is a good idea. Our problem is we would need a 150 foot line, plus, there is not walkway that runs along the outside of the boat. We would need to run the lines through the salon to get to the stern. It is doable, but a real pain.

Wondering if you found the issue with the Autopilot ? Ours was working fine then all of a sudden not ?. Discovered that hanging the vacuum hose in the mid cabin closet above the Flux Compass could actually cause magnetic deviations even in minor waves. A little test later showed we could change the Autopilot heading by up to 60 degrees by swinging that darn hose back and forth. We could cause 10 degrees with a hanging belt buckle. Just our experience but the new rule is no metal in the mid cabin closet. We love your vids as we too are in a big old motor yacht and the sailing tubers dont give us much to compare to. PS we also understand the ridiculous amount of work that goes into your vids. Thanks. Aren and Vicki on No Fixed Address. (Presently in St Augustine)
@tryingnottosink91074 жыл бұрын
It started working well again. We do not know why. The problem is, I do not know where the compass is on our boat. It is quite possible that I had something too close to it and did not even know it. I have a feeling it is under our fly bridge helm, where Lyn tends to store a bunch of stuff.

Is the biggest issue with you disliking the Whaler because the davit doesn't "power swivel"? Do none of them? I guess I thought that davits would "rotate" via power as well as lift. If they make them that do, maybe you could retro-fit one and keep the Whaler you love for it's sturdiness, etc...? It's cool you found a solution that's working tho. 👍
@tryingnottosink91074 жыл бұрын
Replacing the davit would be very expensive, about $20k. We are happy with our solution though.
@googlevoicer4 жыл бұрын
@@tryingnottosink9107 ~ understood, that IS a huge cost. I'm curious, is this the "forever see the world" vessel or any plans to eventually move on? If someday in the future down the road, I would say now you know to make that a major "item" to check off the wish list considering how much it's clear you love the whaler. 😁 Easy to take with if you get something bigger(?), newer(?), etc with a better davit and let this vessels new owners get something smaller or more manageable for her. I think "quality and enjoyment" of life is equally as important as CO$T when it comes to this type of investment. Not to mention safety. 🙂 Thanks for replying... I didn't subscribe when I first found your channel but I liked it more after watching a few... 👍 Stay happy and healthy and safe travels. 🙂🙂
@tryingnottosink91074 жыл бұрын
@@googlevoicer I agree. It will definitely be on the must-have list if we get a different boat. I am not sure if this is our "forever" boat. I think so. We love her and doubt we would want something bigger. I can see us changing out the engines for electric, doing some remodeling and eventually painting her, but even all that would cost less than $200k. Much less than the cost of a newer boat. Thanks for subscribing!
@googlevoicer4 жыл бұрын
@@tryingnottosink9107 ~ understood... I think if you're keeping it LONG term (read: forever) then that would be a 20K worth of investment rather than just a nifty new toy... I mean ease of use and safety of using it and just plain comfort and peace of mind. But I can for sure understand why you're in no big rush to do so - I wouldn't be either. HaHa... I think I would be keeping one eye open on the side for a used one even or something. As it seems that one more suited to the Whaler would would for sure make it safer to maneuver it around, etc. Anyhow - thanks again for the friendly replies.
