I bought a Model D in 1975, and it was one of my favorite instruments. The noises that came out of that sucker made it possible to annoy the neighbors in three houses I lived in. I am sure you're gonna have a lot of fun with it!

Love your video. I grew up always wondering what synth that was in the background of almost every band/artist I listened to and then discovered it was the Model D. We are so fortunate to have a company like Moog that is not only doing re-issues but continues to create exceptional instruments. They continue to push analog into new audio corners. The Model D is just a beauty.

I had an original Minimoog back in '75, played it like crazy for several years then was made to sell it to help pay for college. Years later, I got a Voyager when they came out- kept it for a decade but it just didn't have the same vibe. With regret I sold it earlier this year. Next thing I know they announce the re-issue; I just received mine last week, and I have to say it COMPLETELY has the mojo of the original- the only thing missing was the VCA bleed! Mine is totally dead silent, even though headphones. Surpassed the original, indeed! And I only had to wait 34 years. Congrats!
@mootbooxle8 жыл бұрын
That's great to hear!! Yeah, that's definitely something I'm glad the new one doesn't have...the bleed/crosstalk. And no modulation bleedthrough like every old Mini I've played! (yet anyway...a friend in the know says this will eventually develop due to the completely silly design of the mod wheel).

I know how I felt when mine arrived. Total joy. Three days after it arrived. Totally sleep deprived :-) I hooked mine up to my Moog MF 104M delay. It's like a drug! Beware. You definitely have to feed the output back into the external input. I tap out of the delay back to the external input and it can get insane.
@mootbooxle8 жыл бұрын
I like the fact that the feedback loop trick is hard-wired into this one. But yes ---- feeding a delayed version of the signal back in is SO MUCH FUN! Been playing with that yesterday.

officialmikethompson I'm so glad to hear that Mike! I agree...I've always been a vintage purist. But this new Minimoog and the Korg ARP Odyssey have made me a believer. I don't think I've ever seen anyone so happy to get a synth :-) I have had several model D's over the years, modified and stock, but your video makes me want to get a new one again to add to all the other shit I don't need ! Thanks for putting the fire under my ass to get a new one :-))
@mootbooxle7 жыл бұрын
sevinsound that's awesome ! What kind of mods have you had done? If I had one mod done on this Mini, it would be the ability to disconnect osc 1 from oscillator modulation. So many possibilities with that, especially now that you can use the filter contour to modulate the oscillators. But I'm perfectly happy with it the way it is!really glad Moog didn't go overboard on the new additions.
@sevinsound7 жыл бұрын
Kevin Lightner did my mods, he maintains Hans Zimmers studio, and he did some wacky ring modulator mod to it and added an analog delay plus some crazy shit with Osc 3 that did a cool FM sound. I didn't keep it long enough to explore it because some guy from Italy offered me $4500 at the time because "Kevin" worked on it...so I took it :-) I've got two Kurzweils now, an Odyssey and I just ordered three Mother 32's.....I'm actually a guitarist but I get inspiration from the synths :-)

Nice little video, Congratulations on finally getting something you've wanted for so long. I got mine a few weeks ago and have been poking around on it almost every night. Unfortunately I am not a keyboard player so I struggle a bit getting anything near what you can play here. @mootbooxle8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I totally agree with you, they struck the perfect balance between keeping it original and adding modern touches. Really adding anything more would have started to make it into a different instrument entirely.

Hi Moot, comparing this to the Poly D, would you say the PloyD has a certain edge over the minimoog? Or is the depth of sound from the Moog just untouchable, I vere towards the Moog rather than the Boog, only slightly because of obvious price difference makes the Boog a cost effective alternative.

Do you find it difficult to do frequent pitch-bends with a full octave bend? My SUB-37 does a 2-step pitch-bend which works perfectly for most cases, but the Minimoog does what seems like a whole octave. Is it something you just get used to? (like on a guitar)

Well, I don't personally have any other Moogs (unless my Synthesizers .com counts) but the studio where I operate has a ton of them. I couldn't help but remember when you were unboxing this and checking out the bottom of it how many times I had to turn mine upside down and take that bottom off to get to the contact rods for cleaning. When they got dusty the pitch would randomly jump up two octaves or more in less than half a second creating a squeeling type sound .. very embarrasing during a live gig solo lol. So now that you've had yours a while is it behaving nice still? I'm thinking of getting one of the Sweetwater limited edition walnut ones before production ceases again. Its nuts as I sold my original one I bought new in 1978 ten years later for a whopping $150.00 .. and now I'm getting ready to plunk down 3k for one 😳 Oh well these have midi woot 😁

BTW: Moog Music actually had to do a special order to source some of the parts that have not been in production for decades, specific Transistor etc.. This is why the first Moog was the Voyager and not this reissue. It took years for the company to get big and well capitalized enough to actually somehow get these components remade. I would recommend buying one now if not you could miss out on a once and a lifetime opportunity to own a 21st century Mini that could provide decades of reliable service. These Minis are hand crafted completely with old school through hole PCB construction and discrete components. I even saw some super oldschool metal can transistors on these model D's In all honesty I never expected for this to even exist at all yet somehow Moog Music pulled it off. Almost as good as inventing a time machine and buying up a new Mini in 1979.

Hey Moot, how does the Dotcom modular compare to the Minimoog, purely from a sound perspective? I have the Model D as well and it’s the best instrument I’ve ever owned, but I’ve always wondered how the Dotcom compares sound wise.
@mootbooxle6 жыл бұрын
Dark Horseman I plan to do a video on this soon! The Dotcom is a lot more "tame" sounding than a Minimoog, but that's down to the very clean mixers Roger builds more than anything. Overdrive the signal coming out of the mixer into the filter, and you get a lot closer. I have taken to the STG Soundlabs Mixer module for this reason - it's an updated version of the original Moog CP3 mixer module, which has ridiculous amounts of asymmetrical clipping. Just beautiful!

mootbooxle Great, I look forward to the comparison!

Better late than never! I gave up trying to find it a long time ago. The only person that ever responded to me said it was Lucky Man by ELP, and of course I never found it so I just figured it was on some obscure live version. I just heard the actual song for the first time and wow! That melody is amazing, I can’t imagine an instrument that it would sound better on. Many thanks!

The Model D currently costs 3900 euros where I live and they just left it on the doorstep? Great to see how happy the unboxing makes you. I had something similar with my TB-303 although I went to get it from a guy in The Hague and got a programming crash course in his kitchen. :)

I can smell your feelings, at least having your hands on the Minimoog. Sorry, I can´t explain that in english better. It´s my dream too since I am 17 years old and I awaiting the Model D these days for myself so bad. The Minimoog is given to the right hands at your home. We all give a warm welcome to your model D

Stoked that you mentioned this vid during a conversion a couple weeks back. Excited to finally be watching it. So if the mini Moog model D was not available what would be your next choice in Moog hardwired synth excluding the One? Thanks for the good talks and great content. Now that you’ve purchased a eurorack case (a beauty!) i really need to hurry up for those utility boxes I mentioned built that will allow your 1/4” gear and 1/8” (future gear) to integrate easier. Still holding onto the dream of finding an enclosure equivalent to the Moog Enclosures used for the CP-251. Not only is the size ideal but the aesthetic would match perfectly. I had thought that I found an equivalent through synthesizers.com but they are over engineered for my simple project. However I am very interested in eventually putting together a bare-bones MU system with their modules, which no doubt will grow large over time. What keyboard do you generally used with your modular set up? Cheers, Brian

Good for you man! The Minimoog has also been the instrument I have wanted more than any other, and am currently saving up to make it happen. Is it worth the hefty price tag?

I can say without any reservations that it is absolutely worth the money. Of course I wish it was cheaper, so more people could have access to it. If it wasn't for a friend helping me out I wouldn't have one myself. But I was bound and determined to get one, no matter what I had to do, and it happened! I think this new Minimoog will exceed your expectations as it has mine! I wish you the best in your quest for Minimoog bliss!
