I remember going into a music shop in the 5th grade trying to figure out what band instrument I wanted. Originally I wanted Trumpet but the owner convinced me my lips were not suited and suggested the sax, he was RIGHT! However before leaving I played with a Prodigy. Got done, thought I was leaving started to walk away and that darn thing started playing itself and pulling me back. Still at that age I could not afford one but I was hooked. As an adult I own every moogerfooger models ( except I have the delay but not the SUPER delay), the Stage II Phatty (a conversion I did from the Stage 1), and the Sub37. I couldn't be happier with them, LOL! My favorite is the Sub37.

I am a proud owner of an original "R.A.Moog" Minimoog Model D, serial #1079, (which is the 79th actually, they start from serial #1000), with the first revision filter board, which has matched transistors in it's ladder filter and the first revision oscillator board. just like the original filter board, the original oscillator board was produced about 150 units i guess. I happen to own the other two revisions of the oscillator boards and a muSonics Minimoog Model D as well. Now i definitely have to get one of this as well :-) Minimoogs after the first 150 (i guess) did not have the matched transistors in the ladder filter which made all of them sound a bit different. (The sound myth is partially due to this, it's not completely about the oscillators but the VCF and VCA as well) Now i really would like to hear a comparison of this Minimoog's filter between the original R.A.Moog Minimoog filter. Also, the original minimoogs VCA sound quality was properly bad, and it made the synth sound very good (thats what was missing in the voyagers, bad VCAs, high quality VCA makes the sound kind of sterile, thats part of the vintage charm thats going on heavily these days, bad VCAs :-) ). I really would like to compare the new VCA wth the original VCA as well.

heyyyy how come my sub phatty doesen't sound like that
@gregkrukemeier20038 жыл бұрын
+dilliot2k Because a Sub Phatty or Sub 37 is not a Model D. And was never intended to be one.
@eatshrots8 жыл бұрын
+Greg Krukemeier why is that exactly? I was considering a sub 37 after I sold my sub phatty, but I didn't dive in. Now they release this and I'm trying to understand how the oscillators differ. Is it something with the rest of the circuitry?
@gregkrukemeier20038 жыл бұрын
That's exactly it. The circuitry is different. The filters are not the same. The Oscillators are not the same. There where 3 different MiniMOOGs. Version 2 was the most common and what you hear the most. And all three versions sound different with slightly different Filters. Actually no two Analog Synths sound the same back in those days no matter what the Model or make was. I Own a Sun 37 and MIDI a Slim Phatty into the Imput of the Sub 37 as a Third Oscillator at times. I love this combo. The Sub 37 is a Much better Synth that the Regular Sub. More Modulation options and nearly everything is on thing is accessible without menu diving. This new Model D will have modern circuitry and hopefully ultra stable Oscillator's like the Phatty's. I'm actually a big fan of this and is why I own my Sub 37 and DSI MEK. But that Model D sound just because of the way it is Layed out will always be slightly different than any other Synth because of the way it is designed and the path of it's circuitry. For example you can create a type of pulse width on the classic Model D with out a pulse width adjustment knob, that cannot be created by any other synth. Hope this helps.
@ettubaby8 жыл бұрын
you phatty is all surface mounted stuff. only the audio path is analog. knobs and CV are all digital which is not necessarily a bad thing
@gregkrukemeier20038 жыл бұрын
That's not true. Phatty are all 100% Analog Signal Path. All Pots are Analog Non-Quantized Values during performance. The only time a pot is Quantized Value is when it is stored as a patch. Phatty's have a new Tech unlike DSI Digital Pots where both Performance and Patch Saving are Quantized. And CV is Voltage Controlled which it does not matter if it is Digital or anolog which sources the voltage. A volt is a volt..

I want a synth that sounds the way this guy talks about that synth. I played with an original this week, it was not in top shape, but still, everything comes out of it being very musical, it's very tame in a sense. It never screeches at you, the mid highs are always rolled off somehow, everything you do sounds like it could be in a Air song as is.

Great demo, but he should've qualified his statements about what an original Model D can do. If you add a CP-251 or a MP-201 to a Model D (or any other external LFO source) you can send those modulation sources to the stock Model D's CV inputs and replicate all those same sounds. It's interesting that they chose to emulate the famous "early oscillator" boards but used the ridged mod/pitch wheels from (mostly) post serial # 10,000 units (most early oscillator units had the smooth wheels).

@chieftp8 жыл бұрын
I love 1968 Torinos, but they probably won't make them again because a few hundred people want one. roland makes tons of other stuff that people can buy. the resurrected version of moog kinda just has that one thing. and if you open up a mini verses a jupiter, you'll find the parts in the mini are a lot simpler, where as the jupiter would be more like trying to recreate a texas instruments TI99.

Okay, how much would I get in trade for my family? Great demo. It really bothers me when I see demos of precious gear by people who have no idea how to play a real synth. There were no obvious effects, and the signal manipulations were just how I would treat the instrument. It would be nice if they could put the aftertouch attenuator on the control panel. But I understand that could detract from the retro beauty...still...could use that function all the time....Thanks for a fantastic presentation of the only synth that can come close to the complexity of playing a guitar (hahaha). Agreed, never rated most of the new moogs except the Minitaur and Mother-32 as in regards to fatness, use to own a moog source and once you've experienced that sound the new stuff just doesn't cut it.It's when you start adding digital control of the tuning and O.S it's just too regimental and although it keeps thing stable and in tune you loose the imperfections which gives it that sound which the 60's -70's synths mostly have. But today you can get that sound through the eurorack/ modular world. A modern desktop synth you can buy today which has that sound for example is Analogue Solutions Leipzig -S at less than £800.I'm gonna start saving for that Model-D It's the first Synth i'm lusting for. I hope they make s..t loads of them. And the used prices for the originals are sure to drop.
