As a client if you have a housekeeper or anyone come work for you, you should treat them well. We always provided drinks and food. Our housekeeper knew she could get any drink in our house she wanted whenever she wanted. We also provided snack. She worked til noon. We live far out in the country. We provided lunch for our housekeeper before she went to her next house. Sometimes she would decline and sometimes she would accept but that option was there. They are doing a service for you. Treat them well and you will get better service.

This is true, I had a lady who would make an entire meal at lunch with sides and we’d sit down together and eat. I’ve had some clients who wanted to work right beside me so we cleaned those rooms together. This is usually when they have a lot of personal items in the room they need to go through. I currently only have clients who would provide lunch and businesses that have drinks available. Were people and we do appreciate the client treating us kindly. Many of my clients don’t know that I’m actually an MA and previously worked in healthcare, I chose to clean because it pays over double and sometimes triple and I get to set my own hours. The number of previous clients that treated me differently until I told them that when it came up is a little sad. I think people have this idea of a person that works as a housekeeper and it’s almost always lower than themselves. We’re educated. One more thing is to be patient. The first few times we clean for you it does take longer than others might take. I take my time and get everything the first time so the next time it doesn’t take hardly any time. I won’t give a job my seal of approval if it’s not done to my standard and sometimes that takes a while. I had one client tell me they didn’t want me to come back and I could hear them talking about me in the other room saying “she’s still in the bathroom” when their whole bathroom was covered in thick dust. They had COPD and I wanted to get all the dust wiped down from the ceiling to the floor. I took that long because I know it’s not good for them to breath that in. I was working so hard to get it done faster after I heard them saying that, that I was crying from the fumes being inside the glass shower and sweating so bad. I couldn’t open the window at all to vent the room and I couldn’t breath. These jobs take so much out of me, I’ve handled black mold without gloves for around 20 min before I realized it was black mold and couldn’t breath for a week, caught so many viruses, worked so hard that I’ve thrown up because it was too hot, and pulled so many muscles. We’re trying our best, I promise. This isn’t directed to you personally, just a few insights I thought I’d add if anyone reads them.

A few years ago I hired a twenty-something who worked as a friend's part-time nanny to help me with housework. She "mopped" the kitchen by spreading cold water with no soap or cleanser of any kind across the floor with my mop & bucket, leaving behind a room-sized 1/4 inch deep puddle of cold, dirty water. I was shocked. Because she was so young and apparently clueless, I explained to her that the point of mopping was to clean the floor, and leave it nearly dry (to finish air-drying quickly) and not to create a puddle. She had no idea. None. We started over with very warm, clean water in the bucket, with a little Murphey's soap to saponify any grease or oil. I showed her how to rinse & squeeze out the mop every few feet, and how to dump out the dirty water and refill with clean, hot, lightly soapy water as needed. Finally, we did a quick all-over rinse with plain hot water, regularly rinsing & squeezing out the mop as we went. It was an epiphany for her. It may seem silly to put that kind of detail into a video, but there are quite literally grown adults out and about who have NO IDEA how to mop a floor.

Thanks, Jean for bringing this up. Because we train house cleaners I spend time each day with cleaners who grew up in homes where parents did all the cleaning for the kids, never gave them chores, and never showed them how to clean (for themselves or anyone else). The cleaners as adults are embarrassed, don't know how to clean, don't know what tools and equipment to use, don't know how to ask for help, and don't know the right questions to ask if they did. Thank you for your patience and kindness and for being willing to take the time to show the cleaner the proper way to mop. 🙏

@@AskAngelaBrown You are absolutely right about people growing up not doing chores or learning to clean. I hired my friend’s housecleaner while I was completely helpless after shoulder surgery. She was a young woman. She did not know how to clean properly or take care of things. The first thing she did was march in and put her huge sports bottle and huge bunch of keys on my antique wood coffee table! I told her not to let the vacuum touch the baseboards or furniture but she banged everything up. Down in the basement laundry room, she bashed the vacuum wand into the lower edge of the melamine cabinets, which are on legs, trying to reach as far underneath as possible. She chipped all along the lower edge. She scratched my shower doors scrubbing them, even though I told her not to spend time on that because the window cleaner was coming and he does them. She probably spend an hour on that, and was charging me by the hour. I even went upstairs and told her again not to do it, but she said, “This is just what I do.” She put elbow grease into everything, even though nothing was dirty, and even if was, you must let the products do the work so as not to scratch. She pressed very hard when dusting. She scratched absolutely everything in my home. She scratched all of my stainless steel appliances. She left sharp nicks in the handles of of the refrigerator, dishwasher, and oven. She was wearing rings and must have gripped the handles very hard. Again, for no reason. I have never had anyone in to clean since. Years ago I hired a cleaning service. The third time, two people were supposed to come. They were very late, so they sent three, then even a fourth showed up. That doesn’t work in a 2+2 condo, and I didn’t want different people all the time. They were on top of each other, then spread out all over so I couldn’t make sure they were following the instructions I’d given at the outset. I tried not to hover. but I heard too much suspicious scrubbing in the bathroom. Three of them were in there. One was using my toilet brush to scrub the outside of the toilet. When I reacted, she said in broken English, “Oh, ‘cause bacteria.” She knew very well what she was doing. When I left the room after telling her to sanitize with bleach, she ridiculed me in Spanish, which I understand. One of them, who was a college girl, corrected her, saying, “She’s paying.” I went in and told her I understood, and as a matter of fact my grandparents on one side were Mexican farmworkers who sacrificed so their kids could go to school and succeed, and I didn’t appreciate her resentful attitude and conduct. I never had the service again. In my area they charge too much, and they all do damage. Show less

@@alonzo4164If you have a hard time with mirrors or glass I’ve found the best product I’ve ever used. It’s Beta Clean Dow GC-800 industrial. It is flammable when you’re spraying it but once it dries down it is not. When you use Windex you usually have to go side to side in the same direction or you’ll have streaks. This cleaner it doesn’t matter if you go up down, side to side, or any direction you want and it repels dust. I do not sell this cleaner or am affiliated in any way. It’s just a really good product that I found cleaning for my favorite client. She’s so sweet she even tried giving me a bottle to take home but it’s expensive and I had already ordered one. Yes the mop water should be changed for every single room and start by mopping the cleanest area first and the dirtiest last. You would mop the kitchen before you mop the bathrooms. In our house it was kitchen first, then living room entryway and fireplace tiles, hardwood floor in music room, laundry room and last the bathrooms.

@@jeanvignesYou’d be surprised the amount of clients that don’t want the water changed that often. I worked for a lady that wanted to clean beside me and we were shampooing her carpet, she had around 30-40 free roaming cats that couldn go in and out whenever they wanted. When you shampoo over carpet with hair on it, it clumps. I went back to pick up the clumps of hair and she acted like I was crazy and wasting time picking it up. It was white carpet and the hair was grey to black. One client wanted me to work on her dirty clothes but her bathroom was covered in pee so I went over it while the clothes were washing and drying and the next day, it was covered in it again. It was like her bf didn’t care that she was trying to get the house clean.

I knew a neighbor who had a cleaner, and wanted her floors washed on hands/knees. Of course she never washed her floors that way. I asked. She was very heavy. No way she could have done it physically. I thought she was nuts expecting someone else to do it. I did it and it hurts your knees week in/out. The neighbor was complaining after she saw the cleaner mop it. It hadn't been discussed upon start up. Expectations vs reality. That would be a deep clean, not maintenence, and way more $$$ I think. If cleaner is doing several houses her knees would give out quickly.

I change my mop water 3~4 times per house . I use spin mops in my business the o cedar brand. I buy my replacement mopheads on Amazon so they only come out to about $1.50 a piece. I’d bring a clean one every time I come to our house. And you’re able to wash those mopheads about 10 times before you throw them away. When I wash them, I wash them in bleach. So that they are thoroughly disinfected. And the vacuum I use is the Oreck commercial vacuum. I use a brand new vacuum bag for each home. The vacuum is thoroughly disinfected from the cord to the handle to the bottom to inside where the dirt goes every single time. So that when I bring my vacuum to someone’s home it is fresh and sanitary. If I catch one of my employees not cleaning their vacuum each time, I do write them up. I take it very serious and I make it clear that this is something that I take very serious when I hire my staff.

I use Swiffers for houses that have big mirrors or windows. I use a glass cleaner that truly will not streak no matter what you do so it works fine on the Swiffer with a micro fiber cloth or paper towels on it. You can’t mess it up. I’ll never buy Windex again and even though it’s my personal bottle, I keep it in my car just in case they expect me to use Windex. I won’t even touch it anymore. I swear they put oil in it to make you need to use more so you have to buy more.

House cleaning is more personal than office cleaning. Some people initially seem real friendly at first,but can become anal about anything,and everything. Sometimes business owners develop a customer's always right attitude. Having boundaries is important. Don't be afraid to cancel difficult customers. Many potential cleaners,and cleaning companies. If their difficult people chance are they've had several cleaners. Hands,and knees floor cleaning is a good example of going to far for the customer.

We do not currently have a house cleaner but we have in the past. From a client perspective I would want the housecleaner to use my supplies, chemicals, mops, brooms etc. I would not want even the reusable washable pads from someone else’s house. I would not want a house cleaner to clean my floors on hands and knees. That takes longer then a mop. If I am paying you by the hour I would tell you not to clean that way. Another thing…..if you are going to overcharge me for the first visit then I probably wouldn’t hire you. Our house cleaner was expected to do certain things every week. Then when she got those done we added one extra thing to the list each time. Maybe one time would be living and dining room curtains, one time would be ceiling fans, etc.. the first time you come to my house you wouldn’t do more cleaning then you would the second time. Also if I was a house cleaner I would expect that the client would provide certain supplies. Whatever cleaner they want used in floors, counters, bathrooms etc. as a client I am allergic to many chemicals including anything with bleach or aerosols. By the same token if I had a cleaner that my housekeeper said she was allergic to then we would discuss and find something that I provided that she is not allergic too. We fixed a bucket for our house cleaner. Inside was all the cleaners she would need. Also papertowels and cloths or anything else she might need. When she came all she had to do was grab the bucket with the supplies. Our house cleaner said she preferred using newspaper to clean the windows. Worked great so we agreed. Together you should decided what supplies are to be used or not to be used.

Another thing…the first time you clean my house is like your job interview. If I don’t like your price or they way you did something I wouldn’t have you come back. As a client we always paid our house cleaner extra each time because she did such a good job. If you are coming or my house to clean for the first time it will take longer because you don’t have a routine and you don’t know where everything is. I would prefer you charge me for three hours but maybe stay for four. I’m going to feel like you really want the job and are not just trying to get some fast money. Chances are I will end up paying you extra each time if you do a good job. We paid our house cleaner for 4 hours. We had a list of things we expected to be done every time that usually only took 3 hours. Then the last hour was the extra for that week. Don’t charge me twice as much for the first visit because there won’t be a first visit.

Hello Angela, I have just had porcelain tiles installed, but no one can tell me how to clean them. Please help me with this situation.
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown Жыл бұрын
Congratulations on your beautiful porcelain tiles! I understand your frustration in not knowing how to clean them properly. Don't worry, I'm here to help! Cleaning porcelain tiles is actually quite straightforward. To begin, start by sweeping or vacuuming the tiles to remove any loose dirt and debris. Then, prepare a mixture of warm water and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as they can harm the tiles. Next, gently mop or wipe the tiles using the cleaning solution. Remember to wring out excess water from the mop or cloth to avoid over-wetting the tiles. For tougher stains, you can make a paste with baking soda and water, apply it to the stained area, let it sit for a while, and then gently scrub with a soft brush. After cleaning, rinse the tiles thoroughly with clean water to remove any residue, and dry them either with a clean towel or by allowing them to air dry. Lastly, it's always a good idea to check the manufacturer's guidelines for any specific cleaning recommendations tailored to your type of porcelain tiles. Enjoy your beautifully clean and shiny floors! 🧽🌟 #TileCleaningTips #PorcelainTiles

My hardwood is starting to curl up on the ends . I think it’s because my wife is using a steam mop on the hardwood floor or my cleaner is using too much water with her mop???? What do you think would cause the hardwood to curl up ?
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 5 ай бұрын
You're right! Excessive moisture is the enemy of hardwood floors. Steam mops can be risky because of the high volume of water vapor. If your floors are well-sealed and in good condition, professional cleaners might use a steam mop very carefully for specific situations. But for everyday cleaning, a damp microfiber mop is the safest bet to avoid warping.

Do you have a large area to mop or is it a smaller floor that can easily be done with a cloth? How about a cloth on a flathead mop so that you can do it while standing up? There may come a time 20 years down the road when standing while mopping with a mop will assist in balance issues. Food for thought. :-)

Angela: please do some reading about microfibers in the environment. Here is the Cliff Notes version. Micro fibers are a huge problem in our water supplies, 70% of municipal water supplies have tested positive for microfibers. They are in the tissues of fish and in our intestines. I have noticed after using a microfiber mop there is more "hairy" particulate matter the next time I sweep and dust. An old towel cut to fit works just fine, and it is cheaper too.
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Linda, it's true that microfibers can torture the earth. You can just get a lot more use from microfiber cloths than you can paper towels for example. When you go through as many cleaning supplies, cloths and towels as professional cleaners use in the course of a day - microfiber everything is a better "bad choice".

Hi Lisa, It's a great question and you have to decide what is right for your home and living arrangements. Lots of people don't mop at all. They do daily chores and wait for the cleaning service to come mop every other week. Some households spot mop every day in the kitchen and high traffic areas. With dogs or kids you may have to mop more than the average household.

Me too! I moved from a house with hardwood floors, now I have textured tile with grout. I love my new (older) house, but I have a lot of cleaning to do. So many questions coming, lol! Thanks 😊

Don’t use a swiffer wet jet, I used one on my ceramic tile kitchen and bathroom and it left so much buildup it started becoming sticky. Took me several days hand cleaning with diluted white vinegar and hot water to remove buildup. I now mop with hot water, witch hazel and a few drops of lemon or orange essential oil. No buildup and leaves my house fresh

I do have mopping question, for you. I have a stick swifter mop will post a dry cloth and a wet cloth. How often should I DRY mop my wood flooring? The wood flooring is original from the early 1970s and it dominates my small apartment. I have a laminated kitchen floor, too. I'm trying to develop a good cleaning routine and need to know how often I should have won the dry mop over the living room and two bedroom. I come also have a dust devil vacuum cleaner for use on bare wood floor. I'm talking about the $40 job for small apartment.

Thanks so much for leaving me a comment. You should take a few things into consideration when determining how often to dry mop your wood floors. How often does it look dusty/dirty? How much foot traffic does it get? And who’s walking on it? (pets? kids?). I hope this helps : )

This refers to running a cleaning business. For example, a person may want to mop the floors on their hands and knees and maybe they are in shape enough to do that. If they are an equal opportunity employer they may not have the luxury of hiring only people willing and in shape to get on their hands and knees to mop. Can you grow and scale a business with techniques that exclude the majority of your workforce? No, therefore that should not be the company's standard operating procedure.👍

I had to laugh when you mentioned vacuum or sweep the floor first before mopping. Oh Goodness, I hope people do this, cause I can’t imagine. Just trying to make a laugh with this comment🤣. Depending on floors I use different mops. My big houses all wood floors, I like the string mops. I take home to sanitize. I use the micro fiber mops a lot. But the bathroom floors and small kitchens, still at 56 I get down on my hands and knees. I’ll do it while I still can, sometimes laugh at myself when I can’t get up. Lol I know, I know, safety first. Love listening to your videos, I understand what you are talking about.

Trish O'Connor HaHaHa, Yes! Sometimes I laugh at my self, when I’m down on floor cleaning it, then don’t get up as easily as I used too. I would think, wouldn’t it be something if the owners come home and I’d be saying your phrase🤣 Love it. That’s a good one. Thx

What do you recommend for an apartment with vinyl floors they are annoying to clean...ours are just cheap I think they even get dents with furniture and they have the protectors underneath so I don't get it.
