Marathon training is very exhausting but at the same time very satisfying and giving back the energy and the motivation you put on it. It is a weird feeling I tried, completely different than all the other trainings for 5k,10k, or HM. Thank you Martin for documenting it, in such beautiful places, it also helps me with my running motivation. Keep up with the good work! 👍🏃🏻‍♂

Thanks Stelvio, it's that mix of hard effort on some runs being strangely satisfying & just getting out for a steady run, I do sometimes have to remind myself not to get into a rut of 'Having' to go for a run, instead of 'Wanting' to go for a run. As you say Marathon training is certainly different to other distances (shorter & longer). 🏃‍♂️

Hamstrings on downhills....you must be flying. The trail part looks magnificent. Perfect for fast segments. Good luck on your race, we'll be watching your training progress.

Solid training sessions, Martin! Running on the varied terrain trails is harder than on roads (especially given the weather elements you had!), so I gather it should help? The sunset (sunrise?) at the 5 min timestamp was gorgeous!

Thanks Thomas, definitely tougher on the muscles & joints on the trails, I was thinking this the other day on my long run, the week before was on the road & I was less beaten up at the end, but I did actually enjoy my long trail run more, I think it must be that Type 2 thing folk go on about 🤣

Cheers Ben, I usually avoid speed work if I can, it's hard work! However I do realise if I don't want to run like a snail with a broken leg, I may need to do some speedier stuff on occasion (reluctantly) 😁

hey martin. Its been a while since I checked out your channel, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the last few videos documenting your marathon training. I love seeing the videos of the Aviemore area (including the ice and flooded paths). All the best in 9 weeks for your race

Hey Tom, good to hear from you, hope all's well over with you? Glad you're enjoying the vids, I'm pretty over the icy flooded paths & am wanting Spring to arrive, it's getting closer with the evenings getting lighter 😀

Martin, you look strong and fit. The 8 x 60 sec fartlek workout is awesome. Maybe why your heart rate on the long run was higher than you wanted, could be your body is still in recovery from the fartleks? I'm excited to follow the next 8 weeks until your Moray marathon! Cheers.

Thanks Reto, I'd not thought of that about the heart rate & body possibly not fully recovered from Fartleks, that make sense 👍

The flooding definitely through a little wrench in the run but you found away around it. Sometimes we think of a workout before hand and when we're doing we think man I might have bit off more than I can chew lol.

I've got Training for the Uphill Athlete on my wish list. Would be interesting to hear what you think of it. Good job with the training, despite not being able to follow instructions lol.

The book is really good, more of a reference book, so you need to go back over things, pairing it with the audiobook works really well, I make a mental note of what I've listened to & then find it in the book & make some notes. As you may have noticed I sometimes struggle with instructions 🤣 As well as life in general 😜

Road marathon, I won’t ask anymore. You moved beyond running to training when you start doing intervals or fartleks, etc. Ha ha. I struggle with timed intervals while out running such as the fartleks you did because my watch is recording my running (it’s not programmed for intervals but I know it could be). In my case, I do my fartleks based on distance, slow to the corner, fast to the junction, slow to whatever, fast to a landmark, etc. I know my routes well so it’s easy to customize speed work to focus on uphills, flats, good footing, short or longer distances, etc. Being winter my watch is also buried under a few layers of clothing.

I seem to be going back to the sort of runs from when I started running with some road stuff, it's a stepping stone to build distance & work on some form of speed, to get me back to where I want to be. It'll be interesting to see if my vague plan works 🤔 It's slowly turning more spring-like over here, saying that though it did snow this morning ❄️ Hopefully you'll be able to delayer your watch as the season progresses ☀️
