I really like seeing the different browns in action - really interesting to see how each base coat gives a different shade/effect. I’ve never got into Speed paints/contrast paints etc. before but really impressed with how they look here! Also always happy to see some Mordheim!!

Funnily enough it was using brown contrast paints for things like belts that first made me realise that I could find use for them.

Very nice warband. Glad you went with the square bases 😉. I assume the masking tape is folded over so there isn’t a sticky side which would also give it a bit more substance? A visit to Warhammer world will be something to look forward to, I’ve only been there once but loved it. That was back when WHFB still existed and you could order metal miniatures…if I had a crystal ball I would have bought more than I did but I managed to get some nice blood bowl minis at the time which would have been very difficult to source back in Australia
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 8 ай бұрын
Thank you. The tape was just sticky side towards the mini, held in place with super glue, I spread a bit more on in places so it was harder after I’d hit it with activator. Once primed it’s really not an issue either way. I try to get up to WHW a few times a year, it’s only a 2hr drive, it’s having young kids that stops me most 😂. Saying that I’m taking my eldest up for a trip around his birthday in a couple of weeks.

@@MiniatureRealms well two hours is very manageable. It would be about 24 hours to fly there for me so a bit more of an impediment than just about anywhere else in the world 😉. Young ones definitely put a good pause on hobby trips etc. One day I would love to take my son there. I’m pretty sure he will catch the wargaming hobby bug from me soon enough. Out of curiosity how much painting do you get in a week? You always seem to have something on the go which is awesome

Stuart as always fab! When you dust minis do you find the pigment powder still 'sticks' ok ?
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 7 ай бұрын
Thank you Paul 🙂 Yep I’ve been using dry pigment like this for years. The trick is that you’re brushing it into detail, so it mostly stays in the crevices, any on flat surfaces just stains it. Obviously if you get them wet there could be an issue, but most of use don’t get our minis wet often. I also find you’re doing this on parts of the mini that tends to never really be handled, minis are generally picked up by the by the edge of the base or top. You can of course seal, but it changes the effect dramatically, and you’re better off using other methods.

@@MiniatureRealms Hi Stuart I meant when you at a later date clean the miniatures with say a large make up brush dusting the minis
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 7 ай бұрын
@paulmackay3070 I’ve really not had any issues, the pigment really stains the mini and sticks in the gaps, so much more than dust does, so have had no issues dusting them. Absolutely worst case, you go back after a couple of years and add a little more pigment if you feels it’s gone faint, just as we do with repairing paint chips etc.

03:50 - It's a shame that Witch Hunter model has the torch flame flowing forward. His pose indicates that he himself is moving forward. That flame should be trailing. I suppose one could argue for the wind direction, but his cape is moving backwards, as if trailing from the forward movement.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 21 күн бұрын
Umm maybe, I think the flame direction means the sculptor had wind direction in mind from behind. It doesn’t need to be a strong wind to bow flames, maybe not heavy enough to blow his heavy leather coat.

Looking great! But, a word of warning to new players and yourself when you take these guys out into the wider world. Mordheim is a line of sight game. Meaning these larger newer models will get shot more often than they the original Heroic 28mm ones - 28mm from the base of the foot to the eye line for a regular human (whatever that is) when standing upright, the heroic part refers to the fact that hands and heads tend to be larger than they should be to emphasise heroic gestures. Humans were on 20mm square bases. 25mm bases were for bigger tougher guys like the Possessed. In terms of rules, going for a larger base means you are more likely to be in combat with multiple enemies, meaning you'll be taking more hits and making all alone tests more often. The only other issue you may have is that lots of buildings will be built with the idea of shorter models, so you may have an issue with squeezing them into certain floors of ruined buildings that tend to populate Mordheim boards - but everyone has that one model that causes that issue. As long as you are aware of this, it's fine to use whatever minitures you like... Within reason. 40mm square bases were the size of base for guys with the Large rule - Ogers and such. So keep that in mind while picking your models. If you want to start playing Mordheim. The quickest and easiest way to get into it is getting a box of Skaven Night Runners. It's the same sprue that came in the original box and one box will give you enough models for a good selection of models. I don't know if it still comes with 20mm square bases, but it certainly used to. Round or square bases really doesn't matter at all, don't believe anyone who says that they do. If anyone is in London, UK. Come down to the H.A.T.E Club, we have a lovely group of Mordheim players that will be happy to teach you the rules! Big Mordheim/WHFB event happening on the 26th November. 😉
@MiniatureRealms

Thank you 🙂. Some great points there, very good advice for players to consider if they are thinking about starting. I definitely went ‘off piste’ with the basing deliberately, same with the design of the terrain (not ruins etc, I’ve had a few comments on that). It’s very much a project for home/small group play with friends, and the 25s are so quite a few of the miniatures can double up in Old World armies next year (maybe less so this Warband. For further basing I’d probably continue to match whatever sizes the old world equivalents end up having, I’m not too worried and would rather they were multi-use for me. I’ve seen enough games played on rounds, and mixes as well, it’s very easy to make things work in a friendly setting. You do bring up a valid thing to consider though. When starting a game like this, one that’s been so long out of print that the community is mostly online, and then spread a bit more thinly than other systems, it’s worth thinking about what you want from the game and where you’re likely to play it. Anyone planing on playing events, and/or have a group with an established scene near you, be mindful on their approach to things like this, you’d want to make sure what you follow the rules more strictly etc. You make a good observation on the size of new miniatures, sadly that’s one of those things that’s going to be unavoidable for many players, unless they stick to warbands they can still get in plastic for reasonable prices, or are happy to pay crazy prices for oop originals. I guess in that case players with older smaller models may have the slightest of advantages of a millimetre here or there, not something I lose a lot of sleep over with the way I play games, definitely focusing on the fun. I’d say to anyone reading this, most importantly grab the free rules, find a player or two, grab some models/warband lore you like, and have fun. The rest will sort itself out. Sounds like you have a great community there, if I was local I’d definitely pop to H.A.T.E for a game (obviously with an appropriate warband 😉).

@@MiniatureRealms oh yeah, my comments and advice are just about making sure new players are informed on the choices they make before they make them. We have lots of players using lots of different models from lots of different companies, they all work well and look great! We don't worry about WYSIWYG (just cross off that whole section in the book, tbh! It doesn't even work with the original models!), as long as it's clear and consistent across the whole warband. We play a pre game introduction turn where players talk through their warbands and encourage everyone to show their roster sheet throughout the game. I honestly wouldn't worry about 20mm Vs 25mm or round Vs square. It's just about being aware of the implications in game of different sized bases. Before I knew it could be a problem, I had 40k/AOS players turn up to their first Mordheim game with enormous guys on 60mm bases or expecting to move straight onto the next floor without needing to measure along ladders or make tests to climb up walls. Lots of hangovers from other systems without realising that Mordheim (and other games like it) are far more nuanced and random. I think you'll have a lot of fun with these guys on your board and they'll work perfectly well out in the wild - you'll just have to pick your hiding spots carefully. In terms of terrain. I'd consider building some buildings with interior spaces and removable roofs or walls - magnetise them or get sets with slots and only do one floor (for roofs) or one set of rooms (for walls) that are accessible. Then you can keep the non-ruined look and gain the movement style that Mordheim requires. Another idea is making some buildings with outside walkways, stairs or scaffolding on the outside that allows you to connect up walkways and ladders to them and get the best parts of Mordheims gameplay without needing ruins. Keep up the great work! Hopefully we'll get to see some games soon!

No matter how good the miniatures and paint are, angular bases ruin everything. A square gives visual angles to the stand, and any angle, due to the peculiarities of our visual perception, attracts undue attention. And it turns out that something that should dissolve, be the basis of the base, a stand for the model, something that destroys the naturalness of the miniature, and should be as neutral and hidden as possible come to the foreground. Therefore, miniatures on squares look more “toy-like” than on rounds. Less "natural".
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 7 ай бұрын
Interesting take. I like squares and rounds, many of the models for my Mordheim project will also double up in Warhammer: The Old World armies, so needed to be on squares to match. If I was t using them that way I may well have gone for rounds for Mordheim.
