I felt like when Mordred won a fight, he wasn't only trying to impress Arthur, but Merlin too. He was trying to gain his trust and didn't know why he wasn't to be trusted by him, and I love it. I like to think that he thought of Merlin as a big brother. :)

Arthur might have been like a big brother, but Emrys was a god-like figure of worship to the druids and that's likely what Mordred viewed Merlin as.

Damn if only Merlin was a bit more open to him and if Mordred hadnt jumped to conclusions. He chose a murderer over Arthur in the end and blamed Merlin. Such a plot convenience!

@@23Zen03 I think Gaius caused about 30% of the issue though cause Gaius regularly gaslighted people including merlin and constantly made Merlin feel dumb for the choices he made that were kindhearted

@@sayitsayuri8951 yep, preach. Uther, Kilgharrah and Gaius fucked over the next generation in their own ways, causing everything to end in tragedy. Gaius’ fuckery was a bit more of an insidious one - he gaslit both Merlin and Morgana regularly and encouraged Merlin to *not* tell Arthur about magic at opportune times, always saying “one day Merlin, Arthur will see you”. He also got Merlin into the mindset of ‘save Uther at all costs’ that Gaius himself had due to his own complicated loyalty to the king despite him killing all his peers, creating The Purge and decades lasting effect his hatred and tyranny had. Gaius’ constantly yelling at Merlin about how stupid and reckless he is whenever he uses *any* type of magic in a non life threatening situation clearly affected Merlin, as you can see by season 5 he doesn’t really use his magic unless he’s saving the day. There’s no moments of fun or doing something spontaneous - I think the only time in s5 we see that occur is when he conjures the butterfly in the cave. Gaius isn’t evil, and he clearly loves Merlin. However he has some negative traits that affected other characters which in turn affected everyone’s fates.

I always thought the Freya ark was too sudden and short lived. He met this girl, fell in love, was willing to run away with her and then lost her in what was probably a few days, a week at most. Time in the show is strange but you can't tell me he knew Freya for that long. He actually had time to get to know the knights and spent more than just an hour or so in the afternoon with them (for the few days Freya was alive), they went on quests and fought together, of course the chemistry is better.

All the "destiny" happened because of what Merlin was told to do to prevent it. Honestly, if he would've helped Morgana in the first place everything would've been fine!

It's similar to the story of oedipus, the king who accidentally killed his own father and married his mother. Personally I think the entire thing would never have happened if only Oedipus father didn't ask the oracle to tell him his future. I think that story shows that any man who seeks their future will only succeed in meeting their end. One is only trapped in destiny if they let destiny rule them. The moral of the story is, no man is worthy of seeing the future and you should just live your life as it is and see where you end up. Keep choosing everyday, the path you want to take, instead of letting someone else decide for you (cough looking at you kilgharrah cough) As the famous saying goes, one often meets their destiny on the road they take to avoid it. I think Kilgharrah said something similar in the dragons call episode. ‘‘No man can know his destiny'' or something like that. Which is just ridiculous. Why say that if you're gonna tell him about his destiny anyway?! Istg merlin was set up for failure (just like oedipus) from the beginning! Kilgharrah only said that so merlin asks him about his destiny. HE WAS 17- or maybe not- BUT HE WAS TINY! He couldn't have known that asking that one question would ruin his life forever! IMO Merlin should have never known of his destiny, or at least, the details of his destiny. They should have said you and arthur are two sides of the same coin and left it at that. No magic return to the kingdom, no arthur will be once and future kings, no Morganas evils and no don't trust the druid boy he's destined to kill arthurs. Why complicate that crap anymore than it needs to be, when its already such a handful. If it were up to me I would have told merlin about the two sides of the same coin thing, and only that, because above anything else, all merlins ever wanted was an equal, a friend, someone who understands him and stick by him. The same for arthur. That alone would have gotten his interest and merlin would have protected arthur anyway during Helens performance (assassination attempt) because he's merlin and he saves people (Dude hadn't even met Gaius yet, revealed his magic just to save him, the moment he entered the room). Then I would have slowly started saying the arthur needs you to be a great king, to guide him and maybe one day if he is a compassionate king he will see the good in magic. You must help him see the good in magic. THAT should have been the words kilgharrah said to him. Not albion and practically everyone needs you to do this this and this, the fate of the world is on your shoulders now hop to it chump. The whole morgana is evil thing is also ridiculous and I can't even- Phew ok I think I've vented enough.

Also In case you want to know about Oedipus, I kinda wrote a weird summary of it. Although its really long for a summary so if you don't want to read it, I totally get it. Merlin should have read the story of King Oedipus. It has similar themes with fate and the consequences of knowing your own future. This great king called Laius of Thebes wanted to know his future so he went to an oracle, a woman who received visions from the greek gods. The oracle told him he would have a son, one who would kill his father (Laius) and marry his mother (Jocasta). The king feared this future so he abandoned the baby on a mountain side. But the baby was found by a shepherd and delivered as a gift to the King and queen of another kingdom (they needed to adopt a random baby because the queen couldn't conceive). They called him oedipus because of his swollen ankles, which was an injury he developed as a baby cause somebody strung his ankles together. As he grew up he heard rumours of being adopted, he got curious and like Laius he went to the oracle to find out the truth. The oracle told him he was destined to kill his father and marry his mother. At the time oedipus believed the king and queen to be his real mother and father so in an effort to evade his destiny he ran away. One day as he was travelling he got into a fight with a nobleman and co, he killed the nobleman. He travelled further and came across a kingdom threatened by a mythical creature, called a sphinx. The sphinx told him he would leave if oedipus would answer its riddle correctly. Oedipus defeated the sphinx and because the kingdom had no ruler, they had decided whoever defeated the sphinx should become king. He got married to the Queen and thus Oedipus becomes the next king of Thebes (Uh Oh, you see why thats an issue right?). Years pass and he and Queen Jocasta have 4 children: Antigone, Ismene, Eteocles and Polynices. Alas, the kingdom is struck by famine and disease. The people think its a curse, sent by the gods. So they ask the oracle why the gods are angry with them and they say somebody murdered Laius and the gods demand justice be delivered to the murderer. Oedipus makes a proclamation that whoever killed Laius, the previous king of Thebes, should be banished. He calls in a prophet (sees future something something person) to tell him the identity of the murderer. The prophet, Tiresias, knows the truth (that oedipus is the man who killed Laius, that he killed his own father) and he basically tells him *trust me dude you don't want to know, you should let this go, the truth will only succeed in destroying Thebes*. Oedipus, because he's stubborn and quick tempered, doesn't let it go. He eventually finds out and blinds himself out of self hatred for being so ignorant and defying the gods wishes. Big L

methinks Mordred needed a much more convincing reason to defect to Morgana then a random girl hellbend on murdering Arthur even after being offered clemency. if we had seen the girl earlier having a longer relationship with Mordred or anything more compelling. the writers did us dirty
