I have been Nikon shooter for god knows how long from film to digital. They produce great gear I have a Z 7 most of the holy trinity and the 50/1.8 and they are great. I don’t pay much attention to the nay sayers they come down hard on Nikon without seeing the whole picture. The initial Canon mirrorless camera RF for me was not as compelling a camera as the Z7 yet they didn’t say Canon was doomed or Sony for that matter on their first mirrorless. These companies went on to learn from their consumer what they need to do to improve their product, as is Nikon albeit at slightly slower pace. Nikon is listening to their consumers and has produces and is going to produce some a cool gear, keep on trucken Nikon! Canon and Sony are usually quick to the race, more so Sony, when it comes to innovation and camera features, but at what costs. Companies like Nikon and Fujifilm are slower to the game because they want to get it right and make sure the product has a longer life. This is what I noticed over the years imo and the reason I still follow "if you're going to do something, do it right" philosophy, Quality over Quantity always. I think this is why popular media sources always are not giving Nikon a fair shake. They are about the fast moving marketing world of Sony and Canon to keep their viewership numbers up. Nikon and Fujifilm doesn't play that game and rather concentrate on making lasting quality products.

Great insight. I’ve been considering the z6 after using the Sony a7rii for the last 2 years I made a switch away from canon after being frustrated the previous 5 years with sensors that were falling behind. My Sony experience has been not so great. The menu system is terrible and have not really liked the colors. It just never felt like a real camera to me. The z6 will be my everyday work horse. I’ve handheld the Z6 and love the ergonomics and have read up on the advantages of the z mount and the lenses seem to be top notch and ahead of the pack Probably going to purchase the 50mm f1.8. and the 24-70mm f4 to start with. Funny you would make the car comparison. As someone who is in the market for a new car this is the exact situation I find myself in, lol. It's not about the other features that a car or camera has, but the features that I as the user will be using most often and how that plays into how I drive or take pictures. As an example, the new Ford Explorer looks fantastic on the outside and is the most exciting update on that type of car I've seen in a long while. However, they completely flubbed the interior and even worse Ford jacked up the transmission royally making it worse than the previous year's model. In Nikon's case the fit, finish, and feel of their cameras is class leading and the menu system is the absolute best out of all the top manufacturers. No one comes close in my opinion. The features that I as a photographer would use the most however, are lacking to the point that I am torn between switching or not. This update from Nikon on their Z cameras is the last chance I'm giving them in probably the next 10 years and if the features I need to do my job are not included or are lacking, I'll be switching full on to Sony. If I had to compare the camera brands to cars, Nikon would be a Honda and Sony would be a Subaru. Honda over the years has proven to be a very proud car company that makes minute changes to their models and resists pushing the envelope. Subaru's cars look like ass on the outside in my opinion, but I have never ridden in a more comfortable stylish interior ever. Subaru pushes it's technology to far in some cases as well which fits Sony to the T, both the car and camera have buggy menu systems, lol. Sony provides the features that I need to do my job, and do it quickly which is important to my company. There are no social media influencers helping me make my choice, just the camera systems themselves, which is how I think it is for them as well.

In 1980 I purchased the EM and series E prime lenses. These products were well made and good performers. Critics at that time trashed them as well as Nikon for making them. They were wrong then and they’re Wrong now!! I’ve been a Nikon owner ever since and have not been disappointed. Matt, I enjoyed the fireside chat - well done. I come from the computer tech world as a customer, a VAR, and manufacture. As a customer, I would always have to tell he sells rep, I'm only interested in these features (always under five features). As long as they get it right with these features, I don't care about the others. They may be nice to have and I may eventually exploit them but for the purchase, prove to me these features I mentioned are solid. The features could be coming, half baked, vapor - I don't care as they will not influence my purchase decisions. The same with cameras. Eye autofocus is a great example. It is not a make or break feature of my use case. Is it a great feature - absolutely but it doesn't affect my buying decision. Many other aspects of your chat I like and agree with. LOL, not sure that is a good or bad thing.

Thank you for your sharp insight.! Your observations on are both balanced and well researched ! The unfair expectations are truly unrealistic and very immature! Your perspective is solid. I have made a good living with my Z6 & plan to continue to do so. Matt the underlying issues are rooted in “Cancel Culture”. Nikon has done nothing wrong but not move according other people’s timelines & crazy expectations. They dismiss how much Nikon has grown in 2 years! It took Sony 6-7 years to get their AF good. Nikons colors have always been better ergonomics better engineering better The Af has improved but will be there in next generation. Nonetheless keep doing what you do.

You Go Matt! Thanks again for your grounded approach (love the camera conspiracies reference...the other worldly free-range romp through absurdum). In my prior comment to you I reference my Case Use needs and said that it wasn't time for me to "get excited" yet. The Nikon tease of a Z9, scalable 46 megapixel, 20 fps (electronic? mechanical?) no black out EVF (resolution?) beast just about got me there. Now I'm excited and willing to wait for it at the end of 2021. That said (not trying to be a Debbie Downer) we've heard a lot of promises in the USA that haven't come close to being completed. The Z9 specs rumored (a bit vague) and the rumored 400mm f/2.8 Z mount make sense. The Nikon "transparency" on lens hold up also if true, makes sense. I'm not sure how much Nikon wanted to do this as opposed was forced to given the hype over Canon and Sony trends. It was just enough to freeze some photographers from changing. 2021 is going to be a very difficult year. COVID19 is going no where and a vaccine isn't all we need. Therapeutics would help a great deal. Nikon's Z9 will certainly help. Transparency will too. Nikon, listen up. You know you have loyal customers. Do us right. Let Nikon rumors not be wisps of smoke, but a solid bridge into the future for all photographers.

GREAT video!!!!! Still wondering if there will ever be another top of the line (PRO) ASP-C sensor camera mirrorless or D-SLR for those of us who use and need the specs of the D500. The Z9 while it should amazing doesn't address those of us who shoot wildlife and such where we need that crop and have our top of the line crop lenses. For the zoo work I do a D850 is not the camera, the D500 is what I need and what does what I need it to do and it does it well. So hoping when they drop the Z9 they will have a crop sensor camera or maybe a way that when we put crop lenses on it (the Z9) will give us a crop factor and D500 quality. Maybe the best of both worlds where we could use FF lenses and get 45Mp slap on outr top of the line crop lenses and get 24MP......

Surveys. I never understood why Nikon aren't surveying working professionals and passionate amateurs. If you're an NPS member, or anyone else who uses their products enough to have a Nikon account with X amount of gear in your bag, it would be an easy and inexpensive marketing investment to survey these people. I'm surely not the only one who'd be happy to take 30 minutes to complete a questionnaire on the gear I own, what I do with it, what I expect it to do, and whether or not it effectively covers the pro and/or amateur work I perform. Once you have legit feedback from the masses, not just a handful of KZbin pundits, you generate accurate metrics on the things that lead to innovation and profit. A thoughtful (and thought-provoking) post, as always, Matt!

Alot of youtube influencers are vloggers, thus need a flippy screen, and thus see Nikon's lack of a flippy screen as deal breaker. However, as could be seen when Fuji released the XT4 there are buyers who prefer tilt screens. To satisfy everyone, I'd like to see tilt and flip screens (like on some Panasonic models) on the Z6ii and Z7ii. Other influencers want the latest and greatest technology (that probably what motivated them to become gear reviewers in the first place). Nikon and Canon were late to the mirrorless market, and Nikon haven't had steady releases of new gear to review. This has made Nikon less appealing to reviewers with a personal, and professional, need for ever more gear to review. Fuji have differentiated themselves with retro styled cameras and their (exceptionally well done) vintage film inspired colour profiles. Their appeal to nostalgia has won them the hearts of many fans among photographers and reviewers looking looking for something fun and different. Sony mirrorless cameras also have their own design language, while Nikon, Canon, and Panasonic camera look pretty much the same. And not so different from a decade old DSLR. Nikon may have moved production from China to Thailand to avoid getting caught in the US/China trade war. My suspicion is that the Z primes are big because the designers prioritized optical quality over compactness.
@sarveshparakh72894 жыл бұрын
Agreed Matt! I've hired sony people for my wedding videos and tell you what, the files that come out are less than impressive. But influencers on youtube don't care because they truly do not understand good quality. On the other hand, files out of a Nikon are on a whole different level but all these self-proclaimed 'film-makers' online talk trash about it just because it cannot keep up with the AF in Sony or Canon. AF is never used in 'film' work anyway. It's only used for weddings and vlogging. And these new bunch of wannabe professional video/photo (graphers) all just go to sony because their favorite influencer said others are crap. It's this blind trust that has not just monopolized the market but also brought down the quality of content a lot. Sure, we have fancy lighting and sexy camera moves around now with all the new accessories coming up but the main part of 'film-making' (because they call themselves film-makers) or photography and videography in general is to tell a story and these guys absolutely suck at it because they are caught up in spec battles that don't really have any meaning in the real world. But the truth is those guys that shoot on pro level and live in a long term relationship with their equipment don't really need youtube to make money or don't even have the time to make youtube content. And the irony is that it's those guys that don't really work that much in the real world, who have time to research and create content, edit and upload, are the ones that are judging equipment that is made for someone who doesn't have the time to do all that crap and is always engulfed in their work.

Thanks. I have not gone mirrorless yet because A) the D850 is a fantastic camera. B) I trust Nikon to wait to release solid, well built, professional cameras that will take the abuse of professionals in the wild. I suspect that when the Z9 comes out it will be up to the pinnacle of quality the the D850 is and perhaps surpass it but in a mirrorless body. When they came out with the Z mount I figured they were planning for the future and the ability to provide image quality that the smaller mounts can't. I'm so looking forward to holding a Z9, and if they came out with a small medium sensor camera like fugi that too would be welcome.

Great fireside chat. I love my Nikon kit and have zero concerns about the investment I’ve made in the brand. Now that they’ve got their gen 2 FF bodies ready for market and a strong lens roadmap, I do hope Nikon are developing a professional cropped sensor body and the longer telephotos wildlife photography demands. As it’s not a huge market it’s understandable their business model didn’t prioritise these. I’d love animal eye af in a D500 and maybe a 500mm PF F4 if physics allows. I’m with you for the long term Nikon. Tools not jewels ;-).

Hi Matt Maybe slightly off topic but I own an OMD EM 1-Mk2, Fuji X-T3, Panasonic G9 and Nikon Z 50 with both kit lenses + Z50 1.8 full frame lens. Maybe I am a camera junkie but I've been trying to rationalise my collection down to maybe 1 or 2 systems. Everytime, I pick up any one of these cameras I think this is my camera of choice but No! Every one has its own attributes that I want and not one can cover everything I would like. I would not trade any one of them at the moment. I'm totally enthusiastic about the proposed Nikon Z 6 II but I'm sure it will still be a compromise for individual needs. What exciting times! Best Regards and great channel. Fergus Buchanan - UK

Like you said it is impossible to please all. I am shooting mostly with a 850 with Carl Zeiss lenses. I accept no image stabilization or autofocus with these lenses but I can also say the image quality is amazing. So as in life it's always gotta be some trade off. I am waiting for the Z9 and can safely say I have always like the user experience of Nikon. I will also add I have seen no other camera yet to produce the colors of Nikon.

I don't get all the negative videos about Nikon as a company in so many KZbin videos lately. I wouldn't think a company would dive so deeply into a new system so convincingly with all their effort if they are a doomed company. Nikon has been around for so many decades and through several generations of camera tech... I think they know how to sail these waters. I've been shooting with Nikons off and on since the mid 70's and I am usually (with good research) a good judge of character and quality [as I did when I jumped on the Fujifilm X system back in 2012] and I see Nikon coming on top after the world economy gets back on its feet. The quality of the Z system is blowing me away so far... I think they will surprise many in the next couple of years to come. As far as your theory again on the future of the Z mount, I totally agree. Once I get a Z camera and lens(es) of my own, I am going to somehow test this theory by fashioning a piece of film or analog photo paper over the sensor to see where the edge of the image circle falls. THAT should be a clear indicator of what these lenses are planing to do. [edit] Another idea I just thought up is to get a piece of ground glass to take place of a film/sensor plane and hold it behind a Z lens, view camera style, and see if the image circle cast on the glass will fit into a GFX size image area.... Somebody get on that please.

What I am struck by with influencers is their tendency to view the camera primarily through the lens of a video producer. Thus, their concerns with the video capabilities of the camera. If you are primarily a stills shooter, video is nice but not important. And truthfully for most video produced on KZbin I am not sure the influencers actually use all the video features of the camera. Plus some of the issues they like to talk about ignores how most videos are viewed (smartphone, tablet, or computer screen). I have heard many working pros say they respect Nikons primarily as a stills cameras who do not have a Nikon. There is a lot respect for Nikon out there in the wild. Working pros seem to be more concerned with whether the gear allows to do their job rather than what some influencer says. The Z line introduction was always going to be misunderstood by the influencers. The cameras released were what I would call avid amateur to avid-amateur/professional grade. They had features that are not found on introductory gear but were not the top of the line gear. This can be deduced by the prices for the cameras. This allowed Nikon to get a decent base of users to get experience with the system and get feedback from. These users would include avid amateurs and pros but more importantly these users are actually using the gear regularly. Also, it gets Nikon a chance to flesh out the lens line up for the pros before the introduction of the full professional grade camera to the market. Amateurs are more likely to tolerate holes in the native lens line up initially if they believe Nikon is going to flesh it out, particularly the native holy trinity. Pros are more likely to want the native holy trinity of lens already available when they buy the professional camera.

Some insightful views. IMHO, “early adopter premium” is the reality, although Nikon does itself no favours towards their “early adopters” (like myself). Like Nikon’s 4 year cycle for R&D, unless their cameras are revolutionary rather than evolutionary (z5, z6 ll, z7 ll), the majority of people weigh up the cost versus benefit of upgrading every iteration (e.g. upgrading from the D4 to D4S) and will also wait (unless they have very deep pockets or it’s a company purchase/tax relief). My upgrade path went from D3S to D4S to z6 (using FTZ with 180-400mm/f4.0; from 200-400mm/f4.0 VR2). So, for me, z9 with z400mm/f2.8 sounds like my next upgrade albeit demand (and “early adopter premium”) will be high in 4th quarter of 2021. Like the z6/7, wait a further 6 to 9 months (2nd-3rd quarter 2022) and prices will no doubt fall by 20-25% from those “early adopter” pricing. Hmm, that works out as 4 years between z6 and z9! My take home point is, the 4 year cycle seems like a reasonable period to upgrade to revolutionary rather than evolutionary equipment. Everyone has to decide for themselves what is their cost:benefit!

Exactly. I don't think I will get a Z7 II because the Z7 does all I need. And I don't need 2 slots, grip or faster focus. But the Z6 II is bringing more video spec, and I am very interested to lift my video chops. So use case and cost benefit, right now the Z6 II is the go for me. :)

So then the Z9 is not a D6 mirrorless upgrade, but a D850 ML upgrade? So D6 ML upgrade coming when? I may have misunderstood or missed it in the video. Thanks for the channel, Matt. I had a thought I wanted to share. Many KZbinrs try to retain objectivity and declare, truthfully, that they will follow whatever brand proves to be best. And this makes sense as a professional. But this ignores the fact that they are also KZbinrs with a following. If I had a channel, I would declare that I'm sticking with Nikon to its dying day-that I would be the last Nikon user on Earth. Not because I'm a hopeless fanboy, but because I am a KZbinr as well as a professional, and I would be honest that I want to keep and continue to service my Nikon subscribers. Even if I were a pro, what pro can't do his job with Nikon equipment, even if it isn't the best at the moment, or even if doomed to go out of business someday? I hope you are with Nikon and continue providing free videos to me for as long as the ship sails.

I agree entirely with your comments on Nikon. I am pleased to learn that they are upgrading software in a manner which thereby upgrades and updates existing cameras - cameras that they have already sold. To do so costs them money. But they do achieve a positive benefit in exchange. They enhance the loyalty of their existing customer base. That must be worth solid gold, to Nikon. Especially in the weakened state of today's market for photographic gear. At 8:50 you refer to something which puzzles me. Why would anyone with a D5 or D850 or D500 be suggesting they can't get their work done, with those, and without access to the [currently non-existent] Z9? Anyone talking such utter drivel can scarcely claim to BE a "photographer"! Refer 11:30, where you "say it as it really ies"!

Unfortunately what ever the new cameras offer they will be criticized by some people who have nor will ever intend to use and enjoy them. Personally I don't make a living from my camera so my wish list is small. You put it exactly by the fact there will never be a perfect camera, If there was everybody would have nothing to strive for. Having had Sony A77 & A99 I gave up and went to Nikon where I have stayed. Don't get me wrong the Sony's were great cameras (though lack of "A" mount support) they didn't have the same creative feel the Nikon did. I think of Sony as for the techies with cold colours and the Nikon's for warm creative approaches. I started with a manual Zenith 35mm camera with the split focusing screen and I still have my Ricoh. So auto focus is great but single point for me most of the time. It sorts out "dirty frames"

Nice glasses!
@sidvicious31294 жыл бұрын
Matt this why I love your channel, you always come with logic and the glass is half full philosophy. What I will say even as a Nikon shooter is that the market leader, Canon isn’t going to sit around waiting for anyone, nor are they in any hurry to relinquish their top spot and for now they have the money and resources to keep Sony at bay. I really don’t care for a full articulating screen. I want Autofocus, the equivalent of the R5 and R6 and the Sony A7IV. I want a few tweaks for N log and the Battery Grip with buttons, improved Battery life and the ability to run the camera off of USB C, so that for filming Battery life isn’t an issue and I’m happy to hop aboard, while keeping my F-Mount lenses, while I work on buying Z-mount ones. Sony will have to fix that mess of a menu system going forward. Nikon has never, ever, ever, ever said the Z6 or Z7 were replacements for the D850 or even a professional camera, which some KZbinrs like to throw around when complaining about the camera. If you have used the camera and I have, you know that it is no where near as bad as has been stated on KZbin. I’m wishing Nikon success and COVID-19 has killed many businesses and I didn’t expect Canon to reach their launch date for the Canon R5 and R6, but Canon did it. Nikon just needs to stay away from advertising like “Mirrorless Reinvented” and make a competitive product. Keep the positivity flowing Matt because in these troubled times it’s well appreciated and much needed.

Sony, "C19"; what about Fuji, who may displace both Sony and Nikon? The first digital SLRs were APS sized sensor equipped because that's what was available. Full frame was adopted because of all the 35mm system lenses out there. With the Z system, finally abandoning the F-mount, Nikon should have adopted the largest available sensor.

@MadEnglishTV4 жыл бұрын
@@MattIrwinPhotography As a beginner photographer, I was trying to wrap my head around the exposure triangle, so I put my Nikon D5100 into manual mode and started playing around with the settings. Obviously I couldn't see any changes taking place through the optical viewfinder, so I switched to live view. I turned the dial to flip through the various aperture values. As the numbers when down from f/8 to f/3.5, I expected the scene to become brighter since more light was hitting the sensor-but nothing happened. All the tutorials I had watched online made sense to me, but I was so confused why I couldn't brighten or darken the image by adjusting the values in M mode. It took me months to realize that actually the values weren't changing even though the screen told me they were changing. After a lot of research, I found that when the Nikon D5100 is in Live View, you basically can't adjust anything even though the screen will show the numbers changing. It made me feel so deceived by Nikon. I wish I had started with Fuji instead. I'm willing to forgive Nikon if they just stop doing dumb things for once in their life.
@MattIrwinPhotography4 жыл бұрын
@@MadEnglishTV Hmmm, yeah I understand. Me being old school photographer I never had this expectation around live view, and it was really something I hardly used, as I 99.9% of the time compose through the viewfinder. So like so many things we mull over in this space, in comes down to your use case, your past and your legacy. I have never even thought about how live view performs. Because in my world view it is relatively new. And by the time I started to use it I had an EVF, which just did it. Do you know if Canon did it any differently? And do you know why this happened? It is all to do with the legacy of cameras. With DSLR and SLR, the best way to focus is with the aperture wide open (most light coming into the camera), thus the aperture setting is only applied when you actually take the shot, and this is just the legacy of the old system ... so this is really an example of the new world and old world colliding with a non optimal outcome ... I am sorry this got you. The Z5, if like the Z6 won't behave this way, which is great :)

The one thing I've been frustrated with, is the DX road map. The lack of wide/ultra wide angle is strange to me since it would cover multiple groups of people, IE Landscape and video (Hoping its an Easter egg release). Im really hoping they come out hitting hard on the entry level (Z30 and point and shoot) with a great entry level price and some decent options. I've been firm on the fact that Nikon's biggest issue is the next generation buyer. Thats where it usually starts and brand loyalty is a thing. Its anecdotal but when I've talked with other users it boiled down to they either bought into a brand because a family member used that brand or they "started" with XYZ brand beginner/point and shoot camera and liked the experience.

Its more difficult to make a really ultra wide crop lens. Only a few Nikon DX F lenses were very good.
@baronsilverton65044 жыл бұрын
If you are into ultra wide angle photography, you should really just do yourself a favor and go full frame - the platform is inherently better for wide angle work. Just something to think about.
@neverenoughtimetotinker84394 жыл бұрын
Its possible to get good quality (not amazing) out of crop for wide angle and I think most people going crop are already aware of that. Its also someone the video community looks for in a new camera although personally I like the 16-24 range for crop. I guess maybe I shouldn't say ultra... Just wide angle. My 10-24 Tamron and my older Nikon 10-24 do a good job. I just would like to see a native lens.

It’s a strange how influencers demand all these features while not really being photographers themselves . I also think Sony is very clever and has influenced the influencers . Sony is waging asymmetric warfare on Canon and Nikon and so far has done a very good job . This is evidenced in the way that the prominent photography KZbinrs are constantly claiming that Nikon is going down and that they need to innovate .
