The walk into Gorge River, for an average person, must be challenging as it’s not just a flat beach tramp. Wish I was younger & fitter as I would like to go see Gorge River & visit your Dad & Mum at their place.

This is very inspiring....I have to know more ...I think I might be having an epiphany. One that has taken a 5-6 years of depression, drinking, drugs and failures but also some better times . I’m confident I can get out of this hole I just have to work harder. Thanks please tell your father and mother I’d love to meet them some day. ☺️

Just curious, if you plan to have a family in the future would you also rather live in isolation during the formative years of your children? (Well, if you'll have them.) If yes, would you do anything different? Like, would you bring them to the city more often? Or would you provide them with the gadgets and electronics?

How Has Growing up independent and isolated affected your emotional well being ? And has building emotional relationships been a lot different to those you have now surrounded yourself with ?
@WildKiwiAdventurer
@WildKiwiAdventurer 4 жыл бұрын
Growing up like that has made me very independent and confident in myself. I am also very happy and I feel very lucky and try to bring that into all aspects of my life. I don't think building emotional relationships has been any different to other people.

Hi Chris, I chanced upon your You Tube channel a few days ago and am so pleased I did. I intend to view all your videos. In 1992 to 1994 I worked for DOC in Haast and met your parents in 1993 when I went to do maintenance work on Gorge River Hut with a fellow DOc worker Bruce Sproul . I met your father one other time in Haast and also went to his book launch. I will try and visit Gorge River another time before I get too old. A couple of questions. Do you need to pay any "rent" to DOC for occupying DOC land? And when you are filming yourself walking away from the camera do you place the camera down and then walk away to get the video shot but then need to back track to retrieve your camera? (if so that would be very time consuming). Keep up your excellent videos Chris. Maybe if I am lucky I will get to meet you one day. Regards Tomyu Hu (Christchurch).

Hi Tomyu! Thanks for saying hi! Dad would remember you for sure if you were at the gorge working on the hut.
@WildKiwiAdventurer
@WildKiwiAdventurer 4 жыл бұрын
We have an agreement with DOC to look after the hut and tracks int he local area. Have you seen my video about the actual doc hut? kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqKWkGuXa5qUq9E Its still in really good condition these days. For a few years DOC didn't look after it at all but now they do maintenance each year and we clean it up when people leave a mess throughout the year. As for filming, yes I have to put the camera down and walk away and then back. Sometimes I can get two shots I can use, one walking in each direction, other times I can only use the one shot. If I am hiking with someone else I almost always walk a lot faster than the other person (i inherited Dads long legs) so I use the time I spend waiting for the other person to set up shots, or catching up to the other person after taking a shot, or setting up or packing down my drone. The drone is nice for following shots, works the best if the weather is good. I crashed it into a mountain in Norway haha but managed to retrieve it!

Myself and a friend are contemplating and assessing tramping from Hollyford to the Cascade Mid March. Do you have any tips and does the route from Big Bay to Gorge river follow the coast .Thanks
@WildKiwiAdventurer
@WildKiwiAdventurer 4 жыл бұрын
That's awesome you should defiantly do it! From big bay to gorge you just follow the coastline the whole way except a small track behind crayfish rock and a small bluff just 1km south of gorge river if the tide is in. See my video of walking from the cascade road end to gorge to see more about that part of the hike. Also there's 2 small rivers between gorge and big bay, Hackett river and Ryan's Creek. Good campsites at each river

On your website you say your dad moved out there originally because he wanted to live sustainably. Do you guys see the irony in your family having a much larger footprint now then they would trying to live an ecological lifestyle in a city? Just the flying in and out alone... in a city they could ride a bike to the store. It's not supposed to be criticism, I'm genuinely curious how your parents think about this today. What do they think about the environmentalist populism of their time and how it's returned even stronger these days? Could it be people are being lead astray? The overpopulation problem has gotten worse and worse, but not because New Zealanders have been popping out kids.
@WildKiwiAdventurer
@WildKiwiAdventurer 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but we completely disagree. A small number of people might ride their bike to the supermarket to get their food but when they get there much of the food has traveled halfway across the world wrapped in plastic using fuel before it gets ridden on their bike home. Not to mention manufacturing the bike and the building supplies to build their home (ours are all reused) and the energy to heat their home and the LPG gas to cook the food. We cook our food collected from the environment around us using wood collected from the beach. We don't even use a chainsaw, lawnmower or refrigerator. There are many different aspects to life keep in mind, a simple flight in a small plane doesn't use that much fuel, compared with most people driving everywhere each day in a city. It's very easy to focus on the obvious and forget about the rest of the things in life.
