Hi everyone, I’m Christan Long!
I am an adventure traveler who grew up as a part of The Long Family of Gorge River. We are the most isolated family in New Zealand. We live 2 days walk from the nearest road on the South Island West Coast, between Haast and Milford Sound.
In this video, I will show you an Interview with Robert Long (Beansprout) of Gorge River, New Zealand.
Today I’m at home, at Gorge River. I’m staying with Mum and Dad. I thought while I’m here I’ll take the opportunity to do a question and answer session with Mom and Dad.
This video is a question with Dad and then I’m also going to do a question’s video with Mum in the next video.

Very much agree with you, Robert; if you wish to 'change the world' it begins with self. Carrying placards and shouting slogans may or may not persuade others, but real change begins with self. Kudos to you for going to an extreme and letting your life, along with those of Catherine's and your kids, stand as testaments to that level of conviction. One can hope that such conviction will inspire the rest of us to at least stop using plastic straws in our drinks, vote for politicians who will draft better environmental laws, or teach our young ones to more closely examine and better value our role and influence in nature. Thanks for this post, Chris. Keep on learning!

Legend! Robert is what my late brother Abel could have been, had he not drowned in 1978 on the West Coast. (He was a hippie, living off possums and shellfish and weed by the ocean north of Punakaiki. He loved to paint seascapes, and write poetry :-)

I'm in awe at your perseverance living off the grid, being resourceful, toiling like Adam and Eve and living a rich fulfilling life with children well brought up. They've a rich mind unlike most of the children whose mind are captured and disabled by the internet and games. Thank you for sharing with the world that it is possible to live like all of you. Cannot understand why there are currently so many homeless in the West, they could have banded together and help one another this way to live a clean and fulfilling life. @@WildKiwiAdventurer I live in the North, we have a smaller population (1.8 million) than Southern Ireland and the rest of the UK. The number of cases and deaths from Covid has been much less than expected here thank God. Where abouts in the world are you now?

Thanks for a great and informative video. My question - can anyone build their own house on crown or public land like your dad Robert? How did he do it? I too just want to live in freedom, do you need to get permission to build a house like Robert?

No you cant, Dad never built the house, it was abandoned by a fisherman in 1975 and Dad moved into it. Otherwise it would have fallen down long ago. So he was there long before the rules came. Now you can rebuilt some houses like that but you cant build a new one in a new place.

robert long is a real-life epitome of the fictional "robinson crusoe" robert & catherine's story is reminiscent of the 2 films: "blue lagoon" (brooke shields) and the "return to the blue lagoon" (milla jovovich) though not quite (obviously) judi foster's film "nim's island" has similar theme honestly, i do not know if i can live (all by myself) for one week or two in that super remote place unless those stones are made of chocolate... hehehe

We have to fence the garden for deer or they eat everything. And we have smaller cages over some things that Possums like to eat. Apart from that no problems

We just have a licence to use it from the government/state. We dont own the land freehold
