Hi I’m Christan Long, welcome back everyone. In this video we go hiking to my home at Gorge River with my friend Sarah. The first day we walked for a couple of hours across the Cascade River and we stayed in a small farmhouse on the other side of the river. The second day we hiked out to Barn Bay and the third day we hike down the coastline to Gorge River.
Also Watch:
Flight to Antarctica, Christchurch to McMurdo Sound: • Flight to Antarctica |...
This is the roughest hike experience for me on this coastline because of the weather. We walked across a total of three rivers in this journey. Because of the rain, the rivers on the last day were really flooded and some of the river crossings were quite dangerous. The beautiful nature here in this place I grew up is really so amazing.

I used to think coasters were crazy, but the truth is that even the sandflies can't take the shine off of pure paradise. I took a friend over a few weeks ago and every minute was a glorious assault on the senses. Your content takes me straight back and for that I can only say thank you.

Hi - I came down the coast to visit you guys about Jan 2001. You were about 8 yrs old and we fished for guppies off the rocks for lunch. Really enjoyed staying a few days. Later your dad rowed me up the Gorge and I tramped up over into the Cascade and out that way. Had to packfloat two of the gorges - nearly succumbed to hyperthermia in one of them that was a bit longer than expected. Great adventure though. I know this is a bit late - but thanks for the clip - brings memories to life. Cheers

Cool vid, 👍👍Iv always wanted to do this walk, done the barn bay to cascade years ago, picked up your dad about 25 years ago on the north side of the Arawhata walking along the road, gave him a ride to the shop,that was the one and only time I met him, and found out about where you live ect, What a awsom place to grow up. Your parents did a great job of bringing up 2 children in the wild wilderness of south westland. In regards to your comment about less people coming through nowdays? I think thats because sociaty is softer nowdays, people live there lives through there safe cellphone screen.

what an adventure indeed! it's like nature trip, fun facts, great drone visual shots, reminiscing the past, so on & forth, rolled into one i could just imagine the long, arduous walk, at the same breath, treacherously treading over running waters (and some drizzles) back when you were a toddler with your sis, mom & dad the seafoam, at the finale, is what caught my fancy love to have pix in that "foamy wonderland" 😊

Never, none of us have ever had an accident that stopped us walking. It's a long way from help so we have the mind set that you just cant get hurt. We almost always carry and emergency lovator beacon however just incase, a helicopter will come and rescue you night or day but only in flyable weather

Loved it! Maybe you can create packages for tours that you can lead? ... and put those tour packages online? I can imagine that some people will want to hike over to see you and go on the tour, while others may want to take a helicopter/boat? Where do people stay when they come visit you and go on a tour - camping? This video is very well made. Well done!

Wow, thank you for sharing that! What gorgeous scenery. I have a question, though... how did your family come to settle in that particular location? Was it specifically solitude that you sought? Was the land passed down through your family? For many people who grow up and live near urban craziness, it's hard to imagine such isolation! But I can also see the blessing.
@WildKiwiAdventurer

Thank you! Dad found the place when hiking past in 1980. There was an abandoned hut that no one wanted to live in so he moved there to live in a place he could live off the land and live like he wanted without being hassled and told what to do by society. Gorge River was just far enough away for that!

Looks beautiful, been planning on heading down through there for about five years now, will hopefully get down there within a year or two max. Will call in and say hi to your mum and dad along the way. I've read there books, interesting life you guys have. I think it's nice to have these sort of places in NZ where it isn't so busy and not advertise to much cause there are getting fewer areas in NZ and all over the world for that matter you can do that now without the masses. In areas I went tramping 15 to 20 years ago which were fairly quiet can be the opposite now, The adventurous ones will always keep coming. Love your videos bro keep up the great work☺👍✌

I saw a detailed video you made on how to walk in, I can no longer find this. Can you post a link or tell us where we can find it. I am looking into this as I would like to walk in to Gorge River.

I'd love to go out their and go hunting. I'm from australia, but I'm hoping once the virus dies down I can travel around NZ for a holiday.

Yeah you should, there is a hut at Gorge River that you can use all year around. Cosy hut. And as you can see the hunting is good. Dad will point you in the right direction.

I was on a short walk at the Nelson lakes with a friend of mine when he told me about the family who lived in a Doc hut. I’m new to New Zealand and had just learnt what a hut was. So fascinating. Your videos are improving a lot. I can see you are putting more effort in. You have such a great story to share. I’ve never done any long walks but I’d love to do longer walks in this amazing country. What do you film with and what drone do you have?

Would love to do this tramp someday! 7:14 This hut isn't listed with DOC so I assume it's private? Can trampers still stay overnight here? I see others are calling it Barn Bay Hut so it's getting confusing. And how about the old farmhouse 2hr from road end -do you need permission from the land owner to stay overnight and walk across their land? Also I only see a "Jackson River Road" on NZ topo map and no "Cascade Road" but the DOC website does mention "Barn Bay-Cascade Road". Maybe locals know it differently? Can anyone rent the Lou Brown House at Barn Barn (by the airstrip)?

You start at the end of the Jacksons River road. Also known as Cascade road. Park next to big white gate. You can hike across the land of the farmers. You can try to contact them however as long as you are not hunting they will not mind you hiking across their land. The hut and farm on the south side of the river belong to Maurice Noland and he does not mind hikers using the green hut on south side as long as you respect the hut. The "Hope hut" is the one up the Hope river at Barn bay and there is a small bunk room open for hikers. The big house near the beach at Barn Bay can be rented. Please email me christanlong8@gmail.com and I can give you her email address. Regards Chris

HI Chris, eller "hei siden du og bor i Tromsø!" I am curious to know how trampers get across the Gorge river, You and Sarah were picked up by boat by your dad, but how would other people hiking the coast route get across?
@WildKiwiAdventurer
@WildKiwiAdventurer 4 жыл бұрын
95% of the time the river is too deep to cross walking. So we ALWAYS leave a boat on each side. Like maybe a canoe or a small rubber inflatable boat. That is for people to use. And obviously its best if you can return it to where you found it for the next person to use but with one boat on each side you can get everything across and leave one boat on each side without even getting your feet wet. Both boats are usually sitting under a tree about 200m inland from the coast.

didnt you ever think of surfing around there? i get the feeling that there are some pretty good and secret spots around!
@WildKiwiAdventurer

There's great surf around but it is pretty wild and isolated so you have to be very careful. I do quite a bit of body boarding on the river bar at home.
