It is good to see you back, Dave, and good to see you slapping that granite around letting it know who the boss is. Yeah, it is 19 degrees Fahrenheit this morning. I don`t know what that works out in Celsius, but is a bit chilly for sure. That C-clip you were holding in your fingers looks like the retaining clip for a universal joint bearing cap. Take it easy in that heat and stay well hydrated. Cheers.

Good eye. Pinched, worn smooth, and ears broken off. I hope Dave checks the truck's driveshaft (transported via shoe, hose, etc.). 2023 seems to be off to a rough start in terms of maintenance. Blast bad Karma!

Ahh the lubricator . . . I learned to drill underground in the stope school in the mine I was working in. You know the routine, hose down, scale, muck, perhaps lay track, fill lubricator, drill off round, load and hook up to mains blasting machine for detonation in all areas when everyone was out of the mine. And repeat for months. Then I graduated to my own stope and that's where the learning began. I had a lot of trouble with frozen drills when I was doing a lot of drilling and was carrying my jack leg up to the machine doctors on surface a few times a week. That went on for a while and it was a major hassle to get it out of the stope, on to a flat car, down to the cage, up to the head frame and then repeat in the opposite direction. Finally my shift boss came down to see what the problem was just as my drill was freezing up again. He took one look at the drill, opened the lubricator and informed me that it was dry....... Well that was embarrassing. Seems the lubricator that I was using in the stope was half the size of the one I had used in the stope school. The one I had learned to drill with that would last all day. (Or at least for the amount of time we were drilling in the school in a day.) What a lesson to learn. Another lesson I learned was to watch your water hoses as the valves could get caught on the ladder the jack leg was pushing against and shut themselves off . . . I learned that lesson with a brand new 16'(?) long steel that I had shoved into a progressively drilled breast hole and proceeded to get it stuck. It, I'm sad to say never survived the blast although someone may have used parts of it as pegs in a wall somewhere. Nice to see your shots all laid out there and to watch the dirt jump and feel the vibrations. Nothing we would get to do underground. Thanks for entertaining us out here in KZbin land. Western British Columbia here on Vancouver Island.

The 10 hole biggie went real nice - enjoyed seeing some of the hole loading. As ever - have that sort of ''how did that huge sucker ever get where it was" :) The geology is intriguing. Tank hole rocks decidedly numerous - det cord shots surprisingly effective, and the redundancy deal sounds very logical if the stuff does allow tying. Another great vid Dave.👍🙂

I like to tie my danger noodle, but have added some tape...and often I do use a safety cord... although the only failures I've encountered are down the hole cut offs on my trunk line when loading deep large diameter shear holes, about 80% of the hole would detonate and sometimes leave a few links of presplit in the bottom of the hole leaving cling-ons... we quickly rectified this by adding a 2nd trunk line of det cord with a booster at the bottom initiating both the bottom and the top of the presplit simultaneously... loved the video as usual Dave👏

The only experience I've had with explosives was in the 70s when I worked in Seismic oil search. The shotholes were 50 metres deep and loaded with 2kg of Anzite. When I was on leave, there was a workplace incident in which two shot firers died due to have to treat explosives with respect. A 5 metre deep trench was dug with a dozer and a 2kg tube of Anzite was placed in the bottom and it was refilled. It was sandy country and the resulting bang lifted most of the sand out of the hole.

Many of the real time images of the 'bang' look a bit underwhelming but seen in super slo-mo, one can better appreciate the forces at work with the separation of the particles and the air space between, yet all done and dusted in less than one second!

Pulling the stuck drills: Would it be possible to use a shaft coupler with an eye/chain attached that the excavator could then pull out?

Yes, this is often successful providing the guy takes care not to bend the drill rod in the process.

I wish I could do that effectively however that the camera would need to have a frame rate of >100,000 frames per second... and they cost more than my house! Probably some of the best videos on KZbin for this are - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnnJgox9fLqGarc and - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipmvpYCensaeY7M

a good drill oil should be stringy. Put a little between your thumb and finger and pull them apart quickly if the oil makes stringy. Threads of oil its good drill oil and will not be blown out of the drill. i worked a underground gold mine and i would bring my drills out to the shop about every 6 months and clean them and tighten the rod bolts.

That is an interesting comment, a few people have recommended chainsaw bar oil, that is a bit stringy.

Hi Dave- great video. I’ve got a farm near Kiama in NSW. Driveway needs some bluestone drilled so the road can be widened. Is this something you’d be interested in or would you know of someone that might? Thanks, Harry

I'm always interested in working Harry however I have 13 jobs on my whiteboard just at the moment and some of them are long jobs. My license to use explosives only works in Victoria which is a bit of a downer and Kiama is quite a drive. You could try Dion Becker in Jyndabyne - www.rockbreakingsolutions.com/

Just drill another hole next to it and a bit deeper and put a small explosive charge in the new hole and pick it out of the rubble post blast. Does not always work, sometimes bent like a banana.

How do you work out the 400gram each for each hole. Do you have tables that you use with approx size of rock, type of rock, etc...? Are these your tables or just standard industry tables?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast Жыл бұрын
Just do it in my head, know how many g/M3 I need to break it to the extent required and multiply this by the volume of rock that each hole has to move.

Every time I watch any of these videos I'm reminded of a very important fact.... I work in a NOC, so if *I* make a mistake, someone probably is going to yell a bit because they can't get on the internet. -on the other hand- If a mistake is ever made in THIS guy's line of work....I'm thinking the consequences are a bit more significant and someone could end up in a couple of counties at once :( Terrifying stuff!! Watching him handle it as he does though, it's like he's working with inert materials! I would probably be shaking lol. Awesome video though and super interesting. Thanks!

Imagine if I went wrong in a N.O.C.... Modern commercially available blasting explosives are very safe and predictable when handled accordingly. Thanks for watching.

@@demolitiondavedrillandblast Er... NOC = Network Operation Center. Any damage able to be caused by me would be non-physical in nature. (Financial disaster is still very much possible, but unless I actually drop equipment on someone I'm not sure I could end them lol) I'm uncertain the intent of your comment? I don't doubt that they're safe and predictable when handled according accordingly, heck I'll be the first to say that it's an utterly irrational fear of mine. I was simply stating that you handle materials like a pro that would absolutely terrify me were I even near them 😀 Cheers man, always informative and I can live a bit vicariously.

How / Why does the way the det cord is tied affect the continuation of the 'burn'?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast Жыл бұрын
Ahhh... there is somebody that is thinking. You need to have all of the joints either at right angles like when it is tied or diverging from the source of detonation when taped - think of how the branches of a tree fork out and the source of detonation is at the base of the tree. Either of these is reliable, if you had a taped shot that is fired from the wrong direction you will get a lot of "approach cut off failures" where the detonation shockwave (7000m/s) causes a lot of shrapnel that can cut through the nearby converging cord before the joint is reached. Hope this helps.

Can you talk one of the contractors you work with to get one of those diggers like Volvo had LD 18 demo on a two pond build? That 550 would rip those rocks out in one piece. Then you could bust them at your convenience. He was moving about 9 tons of dirt in each bucket. Ne
