More information than you need about the Renault FT 17 (A WW1 Tank)

Rolling box?? Well yes but there's quite a bit more. This video is a lot longer than usual, but I hope it's still enjoyable/interesting. Came up with this video idea before I even made this channel, and I finally did it. Thanks for watching!

They were still used in Poland, 1939. While not succesfull against other tanks, they were still handy if you were going up against Infantry. I´m pretty sure we still have a working one, or atleast a replica, left over.

There's one in Warsaw. Found and fixed by Poznań Armor Museaum, it was liked so much when displayed that the Warsaw section decided to keep it =)

The last time the FT saw combat was during the 1979-1989 Soviet-Afghan War, where they were apparently used as stationary bunkers and road blocks, which is absolutely bonkers

@@MrClauws History class is a joke, anyways. The curriculum does not do a good job of effectively teaching the history of anything. General history is even more pathetic because of the vastness of what they're trying to teach. It's fine at an elementary level, I guess, but world history becomes significantly worse the moment you go past 5~ grade

For individuals who are especially interested in history, this will most likely not suite you very well and cause you to experience a a year-long course that is mostly redundant. Crazy to see how far people have pushed the tank design. I never would have thought those menacing, powerful tanks such as the Panther or T-34 and many more started from such humble beginnings as a light and rather small tank such as the Renault.

The Renault FT is the 'classic music' of tank history. The ones before it are either war wagons or some motorised mediaeval battering ram with a cannon.

This is not more information than I need to know, this is exactly the right amount of information that I need to know. I LOVE WWI tanks, my favorites are the A7V and Mark V. I went to the WWI Museum in Kansas City and they had a Renault FT on display, one thing they left was a part on the tank near the engine bay where a round had pierced the armor. Really cool.

One of the interesting features of the FT's turret is that the French still used the same turret ring diameter for all of their single-man turrets into WWII, which led to several FTs being upturreted to mount a 47mm AT gun.

Great video with much interesting details I never knew on the FT and Renault. As a side note. Yes we Dutch bought 1 (one FT before WW2) just to prove that our innundation defenses would work against tanks. The FT (like any modern tank) got stuck in the mud. We Dutch didn't use the only tank we had. The Germans used it for air field defense. It now resides at the war museum in Overloon. 24:02

Thanks a ton for making this. I've been looking up old tanks for the portal fantasy novel I've been writing for the past several months, in which the setting goes from a high medieval fantasy to an "interwar" era within the span of a century. I'm compelled to add a character inspired by Renault himself, and introduce a cute and 'almost perfect' first tank with three crew that would be used throughout the second half of the book. I've been planning to do a chapter similar to "The Beast of War (1988)" which it'd be perfect for. Your animations are lovely and the 'edutainment' you create do a great job too! I loved that "What We Left Behind" animation so much.

The National WW1 Museum in Kansas City, MO has an original American-controlled FT17 on display. Discovered in a Middle Eastern scrap yard, the hull, turret (riveted type) and running gear are complete, including battle damage from an artillery shot.

The FT 17 was also used by Romania during the Romanian-Hungarian war between 1919 and 1921. Between 20-25 FT tanks were given to Romania in the first batch and a few years later around 100-150 were amassed by the Romanian armoured corp. Later to be replaced mostly by the Pz 38t, panzer lll and IV before and during WW2

In a way the FT17 also was the predecessor to most WW2 tanks. Whilst the other WW1 tanks mentioned in this video were made for breaking through the deadlock of trench warfare, the FT was intended to be mobile enough to actually exploit a breakthrough and advance quick enough the enemy can't just build another set of trenches a bit further behind. And WW2's "Blitzkrieg" was all about using that speed to advance fast enough the enemy has problems to organise a good defense in time. Whilst we built heavy tanks after WW1, they were always more mobile than the rolling bunkers of WW1

This video is actually very Informative. I know that the Renault Ft is sometimes considered as the blueprint for modern tanks, and how bad the condition is inside to the point of the people manning these tank has to make a new form of communication for each other, but what i didn't know is the oil seal. Like it's very late in the war, where tanks and flamethrowers were used to flush out infantries and people manning the tanks, bunkers, etc. if oil is just leaking inside AND outside your tank, won't it just engulf in flames?

Good point! I imagine the FT would have kept men with heavy flame throwers at a safe distance. Even if one managed to get close enough, the dirt and mud stuck to the oil probably would've lessened the effect of the flame. Great comment!
