I don't agree with him but he is not accusing Hikaru of cheating. He's raising the possibility of cheating, like he's done against many others. Btw I just saw in a thumbnail (and I'll stick to the thumbnail, never supporting that channel) that Chesscoms fair play team has been in contact with Kramnik for a while talking about his suspicions of cheating in chess and their findings. The important part that Kramnik is forgetting about farming in chess, is that is it a two player game. In other type of competitive ranking games is that you send yourself into a pool of random players and you still have to be the best, people purposefully loose games just to farm at lower levels and have big win streaks. In this case, the opponent can choose to rematch against the same player and continue playing, and at any point they can choose to stop. It is a two person decision, if Hikaru's opponents want to keep being farmed, it's their choice.

Some years back, I remember reading about an incident in a Magic: The Gathering tournament where a pro player was on the borderline of making Top 8 in the last round of Swiss and was expecting his opponent to concede to him as it was a common gentleman's agreement. His opponent responded "I came here to play" and ultimately won, keeping the pro player out of the elimination rounds. The pro player was... rather upset. This is collusion (which some other pro players supported) and is far, far more problematic than streamers farming. Farming, collusion, and sitting on rating aren't exactly unheard of in OTB chess, so where's the crusade against any of that?

@@zkprintf In a Swiss tournament, in theory players should be paired against other players with the same record but if there's an odd number of people with a given record, one will get "paired down" against someone with a worse record. A 6-1 player might be paired down against a 5-1-1 player for example. Going into the final round, there's a possibility that the hypothetical 6-1 player can make the cutoff to Top 8 with a win but the 5-1-1 won't make it even with a win. Thus the stakes for the two players are very different. At the time, a player could earn Pro Points with a Top 8 finish at a Grand Prix event, and getting enough Pro Points would earn qualification to Pro Tour events. A high finish at a qualifier obviously helps with qualifying for the tournament it's a qualifier for, a high finish at regionals helps with qualifying for worlds, etc. Because of the importance of making Top 8, it was considered a courtesy for someone with very little at stake other than a bit of Elo rating to concede to someone with a legitimate chance. I believe the reasoning (or possibly rationalization) was that being paired down is generally a matter of luck and it's not very gentlemanly for someone to play spoiler against someone who had the misfortune of being paired down. There was also a gentleman's agreement that if two players were guaranteed to make Top 8 with a draw, they'd do so because again, making Top 8 at all was more important than seeding in the Top 8, and being able to rest and relax for a round was probably a factor too. The thing about all gentlemen's agreements and more generally all unwritten rules is that they're vague and nebulous and prone to inconsistent enforcement. A bit of Old Boys' Club. I thought there was a bit of entitlement to it, since it was only notable because it happened to a pro. If it was just some nobody, would anyone have cared whether or not an opponent conceded. Of course, the counterargument is that even if someone has the bad luck to be paired down, they could simply make it a nonissue by winning. What I don't know is if there was an expectation of reciprocation for conceding. Obviously open collusion and bribery were verboten but again, unwritten rules are unwritten.

Also, as mentioned in this post, the young players are getting stronger and stronger (I began playing back in the Bobby Fischer years when there were only books!). I wonder what Kramnik's record would be if he played either of the players mentioned above that are 12 and 14 years old? Would he get beaten badly in 3-0? I daresay he would lose a 10 game match of online 3-0 maybe 3-1. Perhaps an interesting match would be Mr. Kramnik to play a 10 game blitz match against the 8 year old English girl!

From what I've heard/seen, it appears that only (mostly) some of the Russian GMs support Kramnik, and those Russian GM's that are very high rated and only play in official monetized events. At least, I haven't seen anyone else speaking out Comparing chess rating probability to other competitive games/sports is not a reliable/validity sampling (I took several classes in College, Post Grad in Univocity), it the statistics simply represent what can be probable to the genre being sampled.

You don't need to play an opponent multiple times to farm. Hikaru can tell after a single game if his opponent is dangerous. If he is farming, he can stop playing a dangerous/risky opponent. Being able to choose your opponents and how much you play them impacts the validity of the rating equations.
