You should probably explain WHY in these videos instead of just "they are lying". For anyone curious, the reason it's only pulling 122 or 300 watts is because the impedance of the coil is rising due to the movement of the cone. This is commonly referred to as back-EMF. The lower the frequency you play, the more cone movement you have, and the coil moving through the magnet is what generates this back-EMF. So when the sub is in a box, the box adds pressure to the cone so that it does not move as much, which in turn generates less back-emf and allows the sub to pull MORE power from the amplifier. Typically, the higher notes you play, the more power the sub can pull, hence why it drew more watts when he went from 30-35hz and 35-40hz. EMF Audio is correct in this video, I just wanted to explain the reasoning behind it instead of people just thinking its magic.
@EMFAudio6 жыл бұрын
It isn't just cone movement that causes impedance differences. This is demonstrated in an enclosure where at tuning the cone movement is the least but impedance is the highest. The sub doesn't pull power from the amp, the sub does what the amp tells it to do. The volume knob and gain position dictate voltage, impedance dictates current. Those two combined give you wattage. Even in free-air, inductance plays a role in impedance change so it's not clean cut on cone movement then either.
@gt86life506 жыл бұрын
What else causes impedance differences then? Because there are no other outside forces. I guess the best way to put it would be that as you approach the resonant frequency of the driver(free-air) the cone starts to move inversely with the signal from the amplifier which generates the highest impedance. But either way, it is PURELY based on the coil moving through the magnet. Also, when it comes to current flow the device being powered is actually what pulls current from the power source. To say that the sub doesn't pull power from the amp is asinine, because the subwoofer is in control of the impedance, not the amplifier. All electrical devices work like this. When you plug your phone charger into the wall it pulls whatever current it needs from the 120v power lines. The voltage stays the same(ignoring line voltage drop) and the current is dictated by the impedance of the device. While I agree that the amplifier "tells the sub what to do" by changing the voltage, the amplifier has no control over the impedance of the driver, so the driver is what dictates the actual current, and therefore power drawn.
@EMFAudio6 жыл бұрын
In terms of real world application, different aspects of the enclosure and installation effect impedance. Enclosure dimensions, enclosure placement, doors or window being open or closed, overall SPL, air temperature, and coil temperature all have a factor in it. Any time there is a force applied back on the cone impedance can change, even with the same amount of cone movement. Heat applied to the coil adds resistance, changing impedance. Your comparison of devices use of electricity isn't accurate. Yes, your phone pulls as much current as it wants/needs when you plug it into the wall, and your car amplifier does the same thing. When it is producing power, it demands current to produce that power. The output however, does not work that way. The amplifier puts out more or less current because the speaker is dictating the impedance, not the output. There is a response from the amplifier to a condition, not demand and supply. If you put a resistor on the output, the resistor doesn't say "give me 20 amps of current" because that would mean it would ALWAYS be 20 amps, which isn't the case. It isn't dynamically changing so if it did draw power like you say, wouldn't it be the same amount all the time?

I'm gain setting for clean power. What test tones put out the highest wattage between 29 to 125hz, and from 80 to 20k hz?
@EMFAudio6 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about setting it with no speaker connected, it should put out the same power at all frequencies within the crossover bandwidth. If your crossover is set to say low pass 80 hz, above 80 hz will produce less power. The higher the frequency, the less power it will make. With a speaker connected that isn't predictable. Impedance is dynamic, the lowest impedance will produce the most power, highest impedance will produce the least power. So that will depend on tuning and driver resonance. It's a case by case scenario.
@UltraCon796 жыл бұрын
EMF Audio thanks. In the past I set gains with a 50hz pure sinewave and used a 2 ohm load made from 5 hair dryers connected in parallel. I just saw how your wattage changed with frequency and I guess I did not understand dynamic impedance caused by woofer movements.
@AB-80X6 жыл бұрын
@@UltraCon79 While the theory is that the amp should put out the same power, unfortunately this is not always the case in the real world. Many headunits are also net completely flat. When I do it, I use 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60 80 and 100 for a sub amp. I've seen way too many amps do odd things to only rely on one tone. When setting up a full range, I use 500, 800, 1k 3k and 8k as well. If I set up an amp for mid or high, I start @ 100 hz and use the mentioned frequencies above 100. Also, if you use your EQ to boost any frequency, you need to use a test tone to reset the gain using a test tone of that particular frequency. Personally I prefer to just reduce the output on the DSP by the same db as much as the highest point I have boosted on the EQ. If I have added say 2.5 db somewhere, I'll reduce the output of the DSP channels by the same db. That being said, I only boost anything on an eq as a very last resort.

Hi, interesting test, nice to learn. Thanks for the information! It would be nice to know if other factors are also playing, like fase shift between current and voltage. Could you do the same test, but with a seperate volt meter over the speaker leads and a current meter in series with the leads and multiply the results ? I'm just curious if it would give about the same result. What I also wonder is if those meters give accurate reading @ 30Hz, because in think they are designed to operate @ 50-60Hz. Only, what do you mean by misleading from other companies ? They tested the excursion of their subwoofer on a 3.5KW Amp. Seen on the picture in your video, because that is the information we get. I'm not saying you are lying, but this could make YOU look bad, if you don't give a link to the video or information you are refering to. I'm fairly new to this topic and I don't know "them". Maybe other viewers don't know "them" either. I'm missing "them" saying "our subwoofer draws x amps @30Hz sine wave and max excursion, so it is taking x W." Or something similar. Thanks.

@michaelkafoure7866 жыл бұрын
Not pull but take the power from the amp.
@EMFAudio6 жыл бұрын
Michael Kafoure No, amps put out a given power at a given impedance regardless of what speaker is connected to it. Or in those stupid amp Dyno videos, a resistor. The gain adjustment is to match the input sensitivity to the signal voltage. I should do a video on this subject, people seem to be confused about how amps don't just put out rated power all the time.
@michaelkafoure7866 жыл бұрын
EMF Audio I understand that the amp will produce different outputs of power based on impedance it is seeing. Which is always varying. What I don't understand is how your 12k amp isn't putting anything close to rated to that sub. Why? Shouldn't it see well over 7k power if your gain is turned up, head unit is turned up, voltage and amps are proper on power side of test bench. Also the amp dyno videos are not stupid but they are a tool. It is a measuring device. It is not a realistic representation of what everyone will see power wise because everyone's setup is different however we can tell if an amp will make actual rated power at certain ohm loads. A user can read what the output is anywhere from .5ohm up to 4+ ohms which will tell you what kind of realistic power your subs will see at a given ohm load.

The volume level doesn't matter. The gain could be set for maximum power at nearly no volume or set for maximum volume or anywhere in between. These numbers are poop anyways; more smoke and mirrors. The true output of an inductive load (speaker) (measured in VARs) cannot be accurately measured by a cheap meter because it goes out of phase with the voltage. The audio business is full of these garbage measurements because it makes people think they are able to compare products. Their goal is for you to NOT be able to accurately compare their product. An un-smoothed frequency response taken in an echo free chamber is all you need. It shows output at a given frequency. It shows how it isn't even across the frequency spectrum. A sub in free-air is likely to throw its cone when pushed to limits; it needs the resistance of a box to not self destruct. The video author can play something at lower volume knowing most KZbinrs will hear a clipping mic and be happy to accept what is being presented to them as truth. These tests can also be easily gamed depending on where the sub is placed in the room and what frequency is being played. Another thing is the mic being used is likely not even in its sensitivity to different frequencies and the results it measures need to be heavily adjusted to make it accurate.

I don't think they were doing 30 Hertz I think they were doing 20 and just raise up the volume I see what you're saying but when I seen that video I couldn't understand myself from New England

So if this is true, why can’t I buy a 300 watt amp instead of a 3.5k amp
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
You can, but you still have to consider that free air mechanical limits aren't the same as in enclosure limits. You also tend to have more impedance rise free air so you need a bigger amp to get the same power.

I have a old ppi amp that would blow the coils out of that cheap speaker
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
Then you should probably learn how to setup an amp so it's not hard clipping all the time, and learn what a cheap speaker is.
@1-Six-dee6 жыл бұрын
Worst thing is nep is just using a Chinese generic speaker and saying that it is something great is is basically an x series or a zvx series
@EMFAudio6 жыл бұрын
Your mistake there is saying a ZVX is on par with an X series.

@EMFAudio7 жыл бұрын
Marcus'World EMF is a brand not a sub, and we have been building subs in house since 2013.
@marcusworld877 жыл бұрын
EMF Audio if that's the case will have to pick up some equipment from you all, used to only buy from Alibaba, while the can take a lot of power, they are a little distorted
@EMFAudio7 жыл бұрын
Marcus'World I don't know why you'd do that, it costs more than buying some brands product and you get a warranty and support from that company. Additionally, you don't know what you're getting. They do supply companies with good stuff, and they supply companies with not so good stuff. They build what is designed, so the random stuff you've been buying is probably just bad designs.

While I don't care about either company, why base your business on talking smack? You could make a video detailing the capabilities of your driver, and the inform properly so that people know what to look for. This video do not educate very much, it just serves to trash another company. Way to stay classy...
@EMFAudio6 жыл бұрын
Our business isn't based on talking smack. We have made videos detailing capabilities of our drivers. This video was made because THEY made a video doing that, but it was based on lies. You have to point things out to educate, people were going ga-ga for the misleading display they were putting on. The response from this video has been positive, they became educated on the matter. The only people complaining are the ones that got duped.
