Is it though? I feel like it peaked here in MI around early 2000s. I remember there used to be shows all the time (went to many in my heyday of car audio). I checked into it not too long ago to maybe go to one for old times sake and there wasn't diddly around here. If i ever did a system now, itd be more SQ haha. Gone are my 150+ db days. I put a 1200 watt subwoofer and amplifier from Skar Audio in my 2005 Dodge Neon as a project and that thing absolutely blasts! I have to keep it low when I'm in town and when I come home after work but people always stop and stare never expecting such a small car to be so loud. I have so much fun experimenting with sounds and systems in my free time lol.

When I went to a top fuel drag race, I got to sit near the front of the stands at the starting line, doubled up with ear protection. Easily explained: A speaker is a mechanical device which vibrates to move air to create frequency’s You know that. well a subwoofer does the same but it made to move air in way bigger quantities so that it creates a bassy sound That likes to give of kinetics energy to other things like materials and Bass can’t get very loud because of that feature It is still possible somehow to get hearing loss just through bsss but it’s very hard. You get hearing loss through frequencies that can travel far like the ones beginning at 800 hz (Herz) As these frequencies want to travel and don’t like to give of kinetical energy to other things that’s why they don’t sound so bassy. If you would hear frequencies over 800 hz very loud and for longer periods of time you would lose hearing quickly You can test it try listening to low frequencies loud and then high higher frequencies are way way way more uncomfortable and louder

Anything over 85+ Db for anything over 10 minutes will begin to cause hearing damage. anything over 140+ Db is essentially Instant hearing loss. This doesn't mean the person(s) are immediately made deaf, these cases are known to exist; however most hearing damage will come into effect over time due to the "hairs" in our Cochlea being over worked. They are forced into a shock, and perish. This is how you lose the ability to hear, as parts of the OHC system inside the cochlea are stiffer at the beginning (high freq.), and softer at the end of the tract (low freq.) and are reacting to frequencies in volumes they aren't able to handle. TL;DR Don't go overboard on DB, try and reach a balance between High mid and low Frequencies and you will retain healthy hearing.
