It’s eerie how quiet the audience is during this interview...it’s a phenomenally engrossing conversation

That's why I miss the Merv Griffin Show. It used to run 90 minutes and Merv was so intelligent, he asked such probing questions of his subjects, and it didn't matter what field they came from, entertainment or otherwise. When talk shows were 90 minutes (including the Tonight Show) they were able to really dig deep into conversation. It changed in the 1980s when talk shows were reduced down to 60 minutes and things were speeded up and shortened.

Let's not forget that even Bill O'Reilly, a common foil for both men, agreed that Jon Stewart would make a great "regular" late night show host because he is a great interviewer. Bill said that Jon actually listens to the person whereas you can tell others just have a bunch of pre-loaded questions all lined up.

Aside from his more casual look, Jon hasn't missed a step in the years he's been away. He's still one of the greatest interviewers of all time, transcending both "news" and comedy, and could go toe to toe with just about anyone, ask the realest questions in both a serious and entertaining way, and (for the most part) still be cordial and friendly in the end. In the late night business today, Colbert gets close but (naturally) leans more on humor, whereas I think Jon's still the master of balancing comedy and seriousness.

Well, he's had a lot of experience. Not only with TDS, either. He had an interview show back in the 90's that was one of the best I've ever watched. It didn't last, alas. But damn, it was good.

I was just thinking about that. He wanted to do away with the monologue and I've been there with the "Well everyone does this thing, what can I replace it with". It takes a long time to realize you do not have to be 100% unique in everything you do. You just have to be genuine and reach the people that want to see what you've done.

Jessica DeNittis his “real” voice is the normal show as opposed to his old show which was straight satire and role play. While this heart to heart is so good, its not a viable long-term approach. Like Jon said, you dont just re-do the iconic monologue. Late Night is a 60+ year tradition that had changed very little in its format. Its always been about making light of the day’s events. Not necessarily political, but not known to shy away from politics.

I'm so glad Stephen brought up that Joe Biden monologue. If there's anybody who hasn't seen it, go find it and watch it immediately. Actually, even if you have seen it, go find it and watch it again immediately. It might be the best interview in the history of late night talk shows. Stephen is absolutely correct about it being the real starting point of his show.

All you need is to start a conversation with him and he will direct the conversation by himself and make you feel comfortable talking to him. I really love Stephen Colbert, his show is how a get through my day, nowadays. If I was on the Late Show I would ask him, what made Stephen Colbert, Stephen Colbert? I read in an article long ago that he started his comedy 'career' after the passing of his father and brothers. I would really love to hear more about it, and how he was able to cope with this new sense of reality.

Yes, he masterfully puts on a performance during the taping, but during the in-between segments and before taping he was gracious and let elements of himself shine through. Now this was also in his last year or two of taping. He told a personal story about beating some of the people on the ROTK (maybe hobbit?) set at LOTR trivia. He was incredibly kind and giving to the audience. Seems like a wonderful human being.

I miss the old Colbert show. I'm not american, but I watch a lot of american television, and I have always thought that show was one of the most important shows on the air. It's one of the very few shows I've ever seen that fearlessly tackled the most important and sensitive topics in western society in an extremely entertaining way, much like John Oliver's show -- which I also adore . But what I loved about Cobert the character, and what set the show apart, for me, from anything I've ever seen on TV was how much the writers respected the viwers' intelligence. They didn't feel like they had to explain what comedy is (with the exception of moments like the one in this video, when things got out of hand not with the viwers who got it perfectly, but with the, so called, "public opinion", informed by media corporations). They [Stephen and the other writers] knew that we, the audience, got it, he was mocking conservative media -- brilliantly, or, dare I say it, in a genius way. He was emulating the tone, the mannerisms, the reactions, the vocabulary, the structures of narrative and speech, capturing the very essence of what defines media thugs that captivate masses and made the election of Fuckface von Clownstick possible, along with many other tragedies some people celebrate as victories. They believed the viewer was able to think critically and make sense of all this and that is very rare in television. I'm glad that Stephen still manages to sneak some of that ironic comedy genius into the monologues.
