I bought a CD player many years ago in Chicago. I went for a coffee straight after just a few shops away from the electronic store. I decided that as I'd had it gift wrapped I'd better check it. I don't know why I opened it but I wanted to maybe use it on the plane journey home and needed to see if it had batteries in it. I decided that I would re-wrap it in the UK. Good job I did. There was no CD player but lots of plugs and wires etc to give it weight. I burst into tears as it was a present for my boyfriend. It was also quite expensive as CD players were newly out. The lady in the coffee shop asked what was wrong. I showed her. She rolled on her sleeves up and went back to the shop with me. She went bananas at the assistant, threw the wires etc at the assistant and demanded my money back. She got it back for me and then slapped the shop assistant. Took my arm and we went back to her coffee shop and she didn't charge me a penny. I gave her a $10 tip and a hug. I don't let anyone gift wrap anything nowadays. Be warned.

I've lived right outside of New York my whole life so I go into the city all the time and I've never even thought about this stuff.. I've never even thought to go in those stores and whenever someone tries to talk to me on the street I just keep walking 😅 Also, if you're on the subway or on the street and a crackhead comes up to you and says something crazy or tries to instigate, DO NOT say anything back! DO NOT start a fight! They are crazy! Just ignore them and keep it moving! It drives me up the wall when I see people interacting and fighting with these crazy people. They might insult you, scream at you, get in your face, etc. Ignore them and move away. Do not engage.

I often advise tourists to take the Ferry. The cruises are way too expensive for what they are worth and going to Liberty Island, while nice, is a big time and money suck and unless you have lots of both, probably not worth it. But I have to admit the first time I took the Staten Island Ferry, I was disappointed to find out they make you get off the boat in Staten Island before you can turn around. I was hoping to just stay on board. I had lived in NYC my whole life up to that point (I was about 20 at the time) and hadn't gone to Staten Island yet. I had no desire to start then.

A genuinely frightening Subway beggar was on my sister's car a few weeks ago. She had a child and was talking about how they needed money- the usual. My sister didn't think much of it until she heard another passenger say to his friend, "she has a different kid every time." It really freaked my sister out. Also, many beggars are actually homeless, but if you don't want to fund any potential drug habit, you should give them some food if you happen to have any to spare. A good trick for figuring out how much they need help is if they ask for money OR food, not just money.

The fake electronic stores should be well regulated. I went there once just to get my iPhone unlocked and put it on a prepaid tmobile line. I obviously paid for the 1st month in advance and for the unlock. I spend about 200 dollars and 5 days after my phone just went complete signal dead, I call tmobile and they told me they had put me in a "high risk list", I asked why and they said it was because the weren't sure my credit was good enough for the account, and I said "but my plan is prepaid and I got my own phone, what's the risk?" And they were surprised as well and put me through many different people and finally one of them told me they had never received a payment and that I should go back to the store and get a refund. When I went to the store they acted like they didn't know anything and when I said I would bring the police they say "call them, they know us and would not do anything"

The guy however told me that the phone had actually been sold to them in October when I bought it in January and that most likely they sold me a stolen phone bc of the no signal error . so they really do have a couple of scams going on.

Just got back from NYC last night...first visit, stayed a week. Too much traffic, too many people, too much concrete, and too many scammers. But I didn't get scammed cause I have been around the block a few times!! We took our high school graduate for senior trip. Food was good, shows were good, Statue, Rock, WTC, Central park, One World, Broadway, but I just love to be able to walk outside on my back yard, and sit under a shade tree & barbecue. Or walk outside and not get run over by naked people playing guitars or walking in high heels. Great overall vacation for my kid though!! Thanks Sarah for the videos!!

Have to respectfully disagree with you: The Staten Island Ferry really is one of the best ways to see the Statue of Liberty and every time I've been on it it's been clean. It's really only super crowded during rush hour. Harbour line cruises are expensive tbvh esp if you are visiting the city on a budget

1)Don’t take any pedicab rides unless they tell you exact price up front. If you don’t ask, be ready to be charged from $100 to up to $400 for a short ride. Even though they say it’s $4-5 per minute, just ignore and leave him. 2)When you are at central park and want to take Horse&Carriage ride, always check their official price signs on both side of carriage. Most of them charge $40-50 more than official price. 3) if you are up to buy street food (hotdog, Kebabs) always ask price in advance. Once i saw an Egyptian food vendor charged $7 for $2 hotdog. 4)Beware of street comic artists.(most of them Chinese) They say that they draw your caricature for $3. But then after finishing your drawing, they ask for another $15-20 for picture frame. They ll tell you, if you won’t buy frame for drawing, it will be ruined. 5)Be careful with comedy club ticket sellers on the street. Especially in Times sq. They charge $5-10 for stand up comedy, and you think “wow great deal” until you get to the club. When you are at club to see the show, you will be told minimum 2 drinks per person is mandatory. And you pay $30 for shitty drinks.

Another one is the guys that try to sell you a CD album on the street. They will try to "get to know you" in a friendly way, then pounce when they think they have a sale. But they will say $10, but then up it to $20 at time of sale. They tried this with me and I got annoyed with them, so I grabbed my $10 back, handed him his CD back and walked off. Also, on the positive side, I would add that a great way to see Manhattan on the cheap and easy without a helicopter ride is the Roosevelt Island tram that runs hanging from cables stretched across the East river and back. It costs the same as a subway trip (each way), or nothing extra at all if you have an unlimited MTA pass. Not all that many people mention it, but I think it's fantastic.

My buddy came to visit me in NYC. At the airport a guy asked him and his friend if they wanted a ride in his Lincoln town car instead of a cab. They said yes and he drove them from LaGuiardia to Hoboken where my buddy booked his hotel. It was $105. They were kind of shocked by this but that is actually what a private car costs. The reason my buddy stayed in Hoboken is because he accidentally booked in Syracuse instead of NYC and he had to rebook at the last minute. On top of that he left his cell phone in the towncar. I called and the driver answered and wanted $50 to drop it off at my place. I declined. He turned it into LaGuardia. My buddy left his hotel and they took a bus back to LaGuardia to get the stupid phone so his $105 car ride was useless. He finally gets the phone and calls me. He was supposed to meet me at noon but it's 5:00 by now and he's getting back on a bus to hook up with me in the city. And he forgot to bring his camera. This was 2003 so no phone cameras. He wanted to go to the scammy electronic store to buy one. NYC absolutely ate him up and spit him out on his first day here.

2:05 "Not a scam since she admitted it isn't real". Are you serious? Selling fake brands, illegal copies isn't a scam only because she admits to it? You're insane. It's totally an illegal scam. Maybe you don't feel scammed but it's a scam towards the original brands they're copying. On top of that it's without a doubt manufactured by someone who is in incredibly shitty situation, like small children, political prisoners etc. working in terrible conditions for a terrible wage. The big western companies can at least little bit monitor and control the conditions in the manufacture but these fake goods are made illegally in factories without any inspections and basic human rights guarantees.

I'm surprised I haven't seen those groups of dancers who bring a circle of people around and start a show, but won't finish the show unless they reach a certain amount of money from the crowd. They usually jump over lines of people from the crowd, and hype up the last jump. People will give them money just for them to never finish the stunt because not enough people gave them money. They'll leave the people so quickly and scam those who did pay (usually like $20 per person) by not completing the show.

The only suggestion I would change on this video is to not stand on the Taxi line outside an airport. Taxi's will try to take the longer route to charge you more money once you are in the car. If you are a tourist and don't know your way in the city, you can be taken for a ride in more than one way. I suggest calling Uber or Lyft the second you have your bags and that you know you can get to the front exit in time to catch it. You can even share a ride that way if you like and save up to 50 percent on the car trip or just solo the trip. B&H is the best electronic store. She's right.
DON'T make these MISTAKES when visiting NYC!
