I bought a CD player many years ago in Chicago. I went for a coffee straight after just a few shops away from the electronic store. I decided that as I'd had it gift wrapped I'd better check it. I don't know why I opened it but I wanted to maybe use it on the plane journey home and needed to see if it had batteries in it. I decided that I would re-wrap it in the UK. Good job I did. There was no CD player but lots of plugs and wires etc to give it weight. I burst into tears as it was a present for my boyfriend. It was also quite expensive as CD players were newly out. The lady in the coffee shop asked what was wrong. I showed her. She rolled on her sleeves up and went back to the shop with me. She went bananas at the assistant, threw the wires etc at the assistant and demanded my money back. She got it back for me and then slapped the shop assistant. Took my arm and we went back to her coffee shop and she didn't charge me a penny. I gave her a $10 tip and a hug. I don't let anyone gift wrap anything nowadays. Be warned.

Wow, great list! I would also like to add: 1) The broken “glass”/broken bottle scam - Someone bumps into you and then drops broken glass on the ground. They then demand money from you because you broke their item. Refuse, walk away, and call the police. 2) The Empire State Building ticket sellers on the street - In addition to a ticket to the observatory, these ticket sellers sell you tickets to the New York Skyride, which is an overpriced 3D adventure in a flying car with clips from the 90s. 3) Statue of Liberty ticket sellers - Regarding your Staten Island Ferry segment, it is very similar in that they sell you an overpriced ride on a boat which doesn’t even visit the Statue of Liberty. The only official vendor is Statue Cruises, and the tickets may be purchased online or in Castle Clinton. 3) High school/young adult basketball/football, etc. sports teams donations to buy sneakers, clothing, etc. - most of the time they’ll just take your money. 4) NYC Subway scalpers - Usually happens In stations where there is no attendant. The MetroCard machines will be broken (possibly by them) so you can’t buy a subway fare, and then they will sell you a swipe to get in. 5) Card skimmers - Make sure to check ATMs, subway MetroCard machines and the like for skimming devices which will steal your card info.

I often advise tourists to take the Ferry. The cruises are way too expensive for what they are worth and going to Liberty Island, while nice, is a big time and money suck and unless you have lots of both, probably not worth it. I was hoping to just stay on board. I had lived in NYC my whole life up to that point (I was about 20 at the time) and hadn't gone to Staten Island yet. I had no desire to start then.

Hey Sarah, Your tips are the best! The store you showed that sells fake electronics is a place where my sister bought a perfume and it was so fake. Plus, the guy there was soooo rude to us! I told her not to buy anything there, but she was really naive. I don't know if you remember us, we met you by the Brooklyn Bridge a few days before Halloween. You were shooting the video with Lift and we got the chance to chat a little! Thanks a lot for your tips!

A genuinely frightening Subway beggar was on my sister's car a few weeks ago. She had a child and was talking about how they needed money- the usual. My sister didn't think much of it until she heard another passenger say to his friend, "she has a different kid every time." It really freaked my sister out. Also, many beggars are actually homeless, but if you don't want to fund any potential drug habit, you should give them some food if you happen to have any to spare. A good trick for figuring out how much they need help is if they ask for money OR food, not just money.

The fake electronic stores should be well regulated. I went there once just to get my iPhone unlocked and put it on a prepaid tmobile line. I obviously paid for the 1st month in advance and for the unlock. I spend about 200 dollars and 5 days after my phone just went complete signal dead, I call tmobile and they told me they had put me in a "high risk list", I asked why and they said it was because the weren't sure my credit was good enough for the account, and I said "but my plan is prepaid and I got my own phone, what's the risk?" And they were surprised as well and put me through many different people and finally one of them told me they had never received a payment and that I should go back to the store and get a refund. When I went to the store they acted like they didn't know anything and when I said I would bring the police they say "call them, they know us and would not do anything"
@Sam_on_YouTube5 жыл бұрын

Something similar happened to me and instead of giving my money back they offered to give me another phone and I told them no got into a whole argument, was gonna get the police until a friend informed me they sold stolen phones, I didn’t wanna drag the whole thing out so what I did was go to my nearest apple store, explain I was sold a phone that was not working by a retailer, I had my receipt and proof of purchase and they literally gave me a brand new phone. The guy however told me that the phone had actually been sold to them in October when I bought it in January and that most likely they sold me a stolen phone bc of the no signal error . so they really do have a couple of scams going on.
