Great advice. And no, no place is perfect. Or even close. I'm STiLL trying to adapt, I'm not in my "dream" town, I got kind of trapped in a dumpy town after a car wreck driving around looking for my Perfect Spot. But I'm on the west coast of Sonora and it's dry as a bone, hasn't rained in a YEAR but it's 80 degrees as a high most days and 40% humidity and no mosquitos. it's ugly as hell in this town and there's no shopping, no clothing, no fancy foods, no restaurants...just 2 taco carts and a hotdog place. I'm the only foreigner because no one comes here on purpose and it's 3 hours on a crappy highway to get to Hermosillo. But we're near the Sea of Cortez and my rent is cheap and I have a good fenced area to rescue all the sad dogs in town and my power bill is $20 and I walk everywhere because the van was totaled and there's nothing to buy here. Not even an address to get a delivery. It took me a MINUTE to deal with that. I need clothes, I'd like a desk chair, I'd love some parmesan cheese and a vet in town would be great...but it's small and safe and little kids can get an ice cream and walk around at 10pm no problem and there's fresh fish to be had and good carne asada on the corner. I have acquaintances...but I'm kinda quiet and solo no matter what. I speak pretty good Spanish but the dialect here is different than what I'm used to and so it's a challenge. Culturally I'm still learning things and you'll never REALLY understand Mexicans...and I've been working with and traveling here for 25 years. It's way different than you think. BUT The US was just NOT working for me and I bolted back during the C o v i d scandal. If you want to be free you have to make some concessions. You can't have it both ways and you decide what you can deal with. Avoiding floods and Landslides and violent cartel activity is more important than having a Costco nearby. So I'll get fancy cheeses on my next go round. Sometimes you have to have the discipline to suck it up and power through the moments when you want to run. Change is hard, but in the end, it's the only way. Cartess is giving some good dad advice here.

I made a move to Georgia back in 2000 and I could not adjust. It’s something about making a move out of your comfort zone if you are not prepared mentally to know and understand that things are going to be different. My advice would be to know and embrace your why, otherwise it will be a living hell. Also, if you’re running to a place in search of happiness, you will forever be running! You must find happiness within yourself first before running off to another town, state or country for that matter.
@pearlperlitavenegas2023 Жыл бұрын
I agree but your environment & people around you does affect your happiness (it does for me) It's tough to be happy surrounded by angry, agressive, stressed out, unhappy people coping with meds, drugs, & alcohol. It can be done but it's difficult.

The reason why some people are leaving their home country is because other people are doing it, not because they've done their research and understand the challenges that come with moving. The heat is what has me concerned even though I’m used to hot weather here in the US and the tropics. I loved San Miguel de allende as well. I’ll have to make an honest scouting trip to Merida to see if I can deal with the heat.

We learned real fast not to go to Centro during the day when the temperature is high. All that concrete absorbs and reflects the heat. We learned to walk on the shady side of the street. We learned to do more activities inside with AC during the day. Take advantage of the pool and beaches. Evenings are beautiful to go to parks and explore different parts of the city. We are from a desert town in Southern California. Our temps can get up to 113 F. However it is a dry heat. The humidity in Merida will be the biggest adjustment for us. We have been there different times of the year. With planning and research we know what we will have to acclimate to in order to live in Merida. Life is a trade off. It just depends what you want.

The wake up call is going to be REAL. You have to know your WHY. I've lived, worked and thrived abroad for years in Europe and Asia. It's always hard in the beginning and this life is not for everyone. For some it may be best just to live abroad for a month or two each year.

You would think weather would be on top 5 to research in your place to live. Me having asthma, high heat index would be tough. But at least they cut their loses and didn't waste money.

I don't know that there's a "right" way to move abroad. It depends on the person. On May 1, 2021, sight unseen, I "moved" to Merida. But I had a bird in the bush...as I'd also booked a week in Playa del Carmen. Merida was too hot for this chica. On Mother's Day, May 9, I took the ADO to Playa and fell in love. But for the 3 months that I traveled throughout Europe in the summer of 2022, I've lived in Playa. I keep in mind, I'm not a tree I can move. And the US is just one of many places in the world one can live. We get to choose comfort or courage, we can't do both. Life's short, I say be brave.

I have been in Merida for one month and prior to that in Puerto Vallarta for one year working as a teacher. Prior to arriving, I planned and researched all there is to know about moving abroad and specifically Mexico, having viewed countless articles and videos. Needless to say, living and working abroad is not nearly as glamorous as most KZbinrs make it seem. I am ready to leave Mexico and return to the U.S., and my top three reasons for wanting to do so do not include the weather. In both places that I have lived right in the tourist centers of the cities and even in the best private school in the country, there have been numerous random, lengthy and accepted electricity and water shut-offs (most not weather related) and often the wifi cuts out, making virtual employment unstable. I knew that not drinking tap water, not flushing toilet paper and strong sewer smells coming from every open drain was par for the course here, but it gets old real quick and are some of the small things that we take for granted in the U.S.; I have more appreciation and respect for my country now than I ever have had before. Yes, racism exists here in Mexico too (including xenophobia with other Latinos from different countries). Yes, people here stare as if you are not another human being going about your business as they are. Yes, you will be told unequivocally that "this is a Spanish speaking country" if you are not bilingual, something that I have never said to any Mexican or foreign national regarding struggling to speak English back in the States. The nationalism here could give the U.S. a run for its money, just saying. Many expats will demean those of us who want to return or who don't consider leaving the U.S. at all, making the choice bilateral only - choose comfort or choose freedom. Well, individuals are not just bilateral and every person's circumstances and experiences are unique. I enjoy both comfort and adventure, and now that the adventure has worn off, I want my comfort back - that is my right. Freedom is a state of mind that noone can take away from me unless I allow them to. KZbinrs will guilt people for profit with an agenda and claim that they are weak, as there is a long standing diatribe that the U.S. is all bad and almost anywhere else in the world is good or better; As a Black woman I disagree. Personally, I appreciate customer service, getting receipts for my payments and stores honoring their pricing and money handling errors, getting exactly what you pay for, honest and straightforward interactions with eye contact and knowing what animal I am dealing with from the get go by seeing hate and discrimination towards me up front instead of behind my back or through passive agressive means. I appreciate my rights as a U.S. citizen and I appreciate having law enforcement who actually enforce laws, faults and all. Those of us whose ancestors built our country, and their descendants who continue to sustain the world's number one superpower through our creativity and contributions, those of us who are steadfast in staying put where we rightfully belong, are the strongest and most free from being bullied out. We do not flee. However, no judgment and to each his own.

I appreciate your perspective but mine is different. For the first time in my sixties I am contemplating leaving America due to escalating racism! We have been fighting for so long. Yet, things are getting worse. My research is being focused on Africa. We visited Rwanda for a month recently and loved it. Imo, blacks have the best chance in places where we are the majority. I know the motherland has its challenges too. However, I think blacks worldwide should unite with Africans to save it. It's our last hope. I suggest visiting, investing in, and when feasible moving to Africa. There are 54 countries.

You give good information, Cartess. I just listened to this video for a second time next door while painting. I haven't had time to peruse your website yet, so mebbe it's covered already on your site. Another viable way to explore the world on a budget is to work as a volunteer in areas of the world that a person is considering as a new home. For USA people, the first organization that comes to mind is the Peace Corps. Here in Belize, as well as many parts of the world, there are both international and national NGO's always looking for extra people to lend a hand for a day, a week, or longer [with the proper permits]. If a person is involved in the church or some other accredited group in the US, they can check to see if there are mission trips available in the place of their interest for short term projects. Again, one must be aware of questionable groups out there who just wanting to fill dere own pockets under the guise of volunteerism; however, with due diligence, it's possible to network with reputable groups to explore the world and give back in return.

It's an easy process getting a Resident Visa you just have to qualify financially. If not you would have to do border runs evey 180 days.Then after a year or so of doing that you can prove you are able to afford to live here and they will let you get your visa. You would have to go through a lawyer that is familiar with Immigration law Section 2, Article 54, Clause 3 that basically states that if can show you are able to live here you are eligible for a residence visa. Buena suerte!

You don't go outside much. I stay in A/C July - September. Hot and humid, but not over 100s. Not sure if I want to keep doing this. Gotta' weight costs and benefits.

Wanted to say about the family that landed in Merida and then wanted to leave right away. Have you ever landed in a place and said “this sucks”, and then stuck it out and 2 days later said wow, I was wrong this place is fantastic? Well, I have. This can happen for a variety of reasons. Maybe the day you landed it was an over cast day. Then someone was semi rude to you in a store. Then you had transportation problems. Plus, you were exhausted from travel and had it “up to here.” It wasn’t necessarily the fault of the place you landed. No place is perfect, you will have bad days where everything you touch seems to turn to 💩 , no matter where you are in the world. But, without giving it a few days to let it play out, you may pass on a gem. My only reason for leaving a place immediately is if I feel unsafe. Did that in Jamaica where in a few day visit I felt unsafe several times. But, all the other stuff? Small potatoes.

Safety is a big factor. Agree. AC made Las Vegas. Just need to up the electric resources in Merida area and it will boom even more.

What do schools do with the kids when it's that hot? Is it like back east when they have "snow days?"

It seems like they just didn't like Mexico as a whole. What's the rush and going back home so quickly? Why Didn't they go to a few other cities and check it out To see if the weather was More of what they were looking for?
@shemari0129 Жыл бұрын
They should have had other options. Mexico is a huge place like the US so has a huge variety of living conditions. KZbin has people, Black people even, living in various places in Mexico. Why not do more research before landing? What a waste of time and money because of poor planning.

@@hildazaid6684 People should just do a little more research before they go to mexico . I mean it's not hard to Google a weather chart of marita to see what the average temperature there is I would know just by looking at the chart I wouldn't want to live there In the summertime . Come on people just do a little research for christ sake!

Valle de Bravo Estado de Mexico looks like Sweden. Cool year around, but property is very expensive.

They tax all of your income, including SS and they have changed their visa requirements. I have some fairly well off friends who lived there for a couple of years and now they are moving to Mexico after visiting me.

Maybe they should try lake chapala Mexico? What do you think about that place in Mexico for a good year around climate?
@chasingtheAmericanDream Жыл бұрын
Lake Chapala would have been a better option for them in terms of climate, however in lake Chapala they don’t have Uber, Uber eats, and some other things… but Chapala is a very nice area Ajijic is more smaller and has more of an older population and more expats in Ajijic.

@@chasingtheAmericanDreamDid you two ever make it through the Ensenada area? It's one of the few beach towns that has a great climate year round and it's not a main tourist/gringo hotspot. It's a safe working town and everywhere I go people are happy and friendly.

Cartess people go through the same process after they retire. It's fun & exciting for a few weeks, like they're on vacation Then reality sinks in. They're not going back to work. They get bored sitting in front of the TV day after day with nothing to do, no friends, no commute, no office gossip, no purpose etc. 🤯
@davidsebastianelli1326 Жыл бұрын
Sometimes it's nice to do nothing all day and afterwards to rest. Although yesterday I jogged for an hour or so on the beach and surfed for two+ hours before going for a long walk down the malecon to get lunch at the world famous La Guerrerense and then walking back to my car.

I sell used stuff here in the states. Is selling on secondhand markets a thing there? Flea markets? Is it frowned upon for US Americans to sell stuff, if not illegal? Guessing you need permits or residency status?
