The Sheep Game

2 жыл бұрын

We're off up North for a few days scanning with Highland Agricultural Contractors.
The farmers in this video do great work to get the sheep in despite the conditions!
Great scenery, hardy sheep and a bit of fun along the way.
Hope you enjoy and feel free to ask any questions,
Cammy

ABOUT ME
I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on KZbin and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

The second you mentioned snow, I hoped you’d had time to change those tires! You didn’t do too bad, it could have been worse. In QC we usually all keep extra blanket, gloves water, shovel in our trunks during the snow season( Nov.- April or May) just in case. Always a full tank of gas . Tires are the key and drive slower. Good luck .Cammy, you should try to visit Sandi in January when It can get to -40 and have a nice wind. It’s just lovely .

Cammie, just enjoyed this video so much. You are so much fun with your bright, positive personality. I even laughed when you got stuck in the last video. But, no problem is insurmountable for you. You seem confident that you will always solve the dilemma. I love Scotland and have visited there 3 times. Seeing this snow storm was a visual delight, loved the vistas of the sheep in the snow and when you drove up to the stone farmhouse in the snow, I thought that was a beautiful sight. I hope all the best for you and your family. And, thanks for taking us along with you on your videos. They are so much fun to see.

What a lovely little setup you have. It looks comfortable enough; you just need a foot warmer heater. You also need good waterproof Canadian boots and sock! That's a lovely video showing your work. I love seeing people doing their work passionately. The sheep will weather all the seasons. The start of lambing coincides with proper spring, so I'm really looking forward to the lambing videos. I can hear geese in the background! Another sign of spring for me is the migrating birds. I'm a casual bird enthusiast (my surname is literally Bird). Geese have been spotted migrating through Estonia 🇪🇪 six weeks ago, but massive migration started a couple of weeks ago. Estonia has quite a lot of wetlands, so it's a wonderful place for the geese to stop by during the migration

I gotta ask, how often does one sheep accidentally "escape" through the door if you're not quick enough? Also do any farms seem to have a standard for dyes for empty/single/twin/trip/3+? Hi😁 Honestly no sheep escape because the gates work like a cattle crush so the sheep closes them herself as she hits them. I don’t think about the colour so much. Absolutely gorgeous. The snow and the sheep. I’m sure glad that you can read that scan machine because it doesn’t look like anything to me 🤣🤣

Sandi Brock's farm in Staffa, Ontario Canada is about 1 1/2 hours from my house. 😉 When we get white outs, you can barely see your hand in front of your face.🖐️😬 🌨️❄️🌨️🥶

As we discussed yesterday, we understand snow storms in Northern Michigan. Our snow plows have 10 foot blades! Sometimes we get 3 or more feet of snow in a storm😀. Many of us have 4 wheel drive. We have very few livestock farms. Our weather and land are not conductive for large production farming. We do have many (undomesticated) elk and white tail deer everywhere! Love to watch the sheep jump from the trailer!

"It's a dry snow." Is that like when you go to any vaguely arid area, and you're absolutely required to say, "but it's a dry heat!" And yes, watching those Springboks (I can't spell) jumping is mesmerizing!
