Just coming from corn country and yes an old ways person lol.. its best to leave it on the stalk to dry, also you want it planted that close together for wind storms and such they support each other. I hope this works for ya'll and understand trying to save the husks. Love the corn tails lol.. so cute.

Yep, I’m from corn country. It stays in the field until it’s dry, the harvest. I think your pigs and cows will appreciate the stalks.

I would of suggested that they braid the corn (and onions) then hang it, I had done that to white corn. Not the same type of corn I guess. Good to know that it should be left on the stalks in the field:)
@deloresochoa62352 жыл бұрын
You planted correctly! It supports itself when you have storms and it has to be planted that close for pollination. That's why you had a very good harvest and your ears of corn were full. Don't change a thing Hollar family, just increase the area but keep the seeding close together. Just like you did with this small section. I'm 72 and we have planted corn close ( about ten inches apart) to each other and never had a bad year of harvest. Yes, we agree with you about the harvesting, but it's worth it. GOD bless you all!

Buggy was so cute with her squirrel tail. Wow! That part at the end with the dark storm clouds was awesome!!! Those tamales sound really good. This is not something that I have ever asked for before, but I don’t know what else to do. The city of Louisville, KY needs a lot of prayers right now. For people living in Louisville, the year of 2020 was the worst year most of us had ever endured. Besides the fear that came with the pandemic, violent strangers invaded our city trying to turn neighbor against neighbor, and everyone against our police and first responders, while crime went sky high. We have not yet recovered from it. Now evil people want to stir up all of that anger and pain in order to influence the elections. We have lost most of our best police officers over the hateful way things were handled. We have lost so much law and order, and now we have to relive the whole nightmare again. This is a power game strategy to them, but for us this is our lives. Please pray for peace and unity for the city of Louisville. Thank you.

In a half acre of corn, we got enough corn to feed over 500 people at a fall beef roast. Fed 20 families in our church, and sold 120 bushels to our local market. That money went to buying flour and barrels of pasta from a local mill. Our four community milkers produced enough milk for all our needs. Another half acre of garden produced all our other veg. A local orchard allowed us to glean after their commercial harvest and some of that went to our church ladies who made pies to raise money for charities. Through all of this we learned there is great abundance harvested by working together in love.

That is one of the ways we dried our corn in Minnesota. As you well know, Ben, there are many types of sweet corn seed. Years ago we bought Jubilee corn which grew nice big ears with a great tasting corn. We had a Birds Eye plant in town and this is what they grew to freeze. Don't know if it is around anymore. Back then with young kids and many relatives we planted about 1/2 acre and we had a lot of corn for us and the relatives. Would freeze a lotttt. One thing we did was dry the corn and remove it from the ear. We dried it very dry and then put some of those kernels in with the corn we bought for popping. This was an interesting way to get another little kick out of a popped corn and butter on A Sunday afternoon. And yes, you are right...ears look big until you tear off the husks. God is teasing us!!! Good job folks. Joan

have you thought about putting the corn stalks through the chipper and feed it to the cows, chickens and pigs
@lesliecastle67912 жыл бұрын
Yup, cure on the stalk. My grandpa had a corn crib that he filled with a field of corn. He’d send us grandkids to the corn crib to shuck and shell with a few 5 gallon buckets. We’d climb to the top of the pile, find a comfy seat and get started. One bucket for the shelled corn, one bucket for the cobs, one for the husks. We’d come out with blisters on our thumbs, but we were so proud to get a half bucket full by the time he came back to get us from checking the cows. Corn went to the chickens, husks went to the pigs, cobs went to a bucket soaking in kerosene for fire starter. After he’d collect his quota of fire cobs, the rest would go to the pigs.

As a Midwest corn farmer, we plant field corn 8-10 inches apart for strength against wind and better pollination. Let mother nature do the drying. Leave the corn on the stalk until the ears drop or point at the ground. For your area, September-November is harvest time.**Field corn is the same corn that goes into corn meal, cereal, livestock feed and other corn products.

I agree with some of the other commenters. Braiding is the wat to go I think. You can braid onions, garlic, corn, you can also make chili ristras to save your chilis too. Space saver. Also, you don't need all the husks to braid. I also heard of people putting nails in boards, removing the husks and impaling the corn on the nails. One guy used to use the nails from his roof in his attic to impale his corn. They had vents and a window to open in there too. I love watching you guys do the homestead thing. Your channel is my favorite.

Nice harvest!!! I didn't get any in this year. Last year though, I had my first successful Harvest I feel it was largely do to DENCE planting!!! Don't plant less dence rows" just make more space between rows so you can get in there and hand polinate.... doing that WORKED VERY WELL for me! It's super fast and easy to hand polinate corn!

I would also save quite a few ears just to cook to have corn on the cob or grilled corn on the cob on your smoker there is nothing better than that.
