The time has come to harvest our watermelon and squash patch before they all rot, and it’s a bit of a treasure hunt to make sure we get them all. Plus, chipping trees in the woods to make room for pig pasture.
Today’s music, in order (available through Epidemic Sound bit.ly/2Mt3tXm ):

Meg, how do you store all that canned corn? I have read do not stack your filled jars. Then how has Ben figured this out? Special rack?
@rainspringing
@rainspringing 2 жыл бұрын
@@janew5351 If you put something between the jars that distributes the weight across all the jars, you can stack at least once, preferably only small jars on top. I've seen 2x4s laid across supports just a bit taller than the jars, such as cinder blocks, hold up for many years. This actually lasts a long time in a non-damp/southern, non-earthquake prone, and dry storage area. Just need to be very careful about the 2x4s shifting as you get those jars in the back. Better long term option for many pints, etc. is an affixed shelving unit, suited to paperback book/Blueray sizing that is strong, with front stops. (Company in the US makes such things out of unfinished pine, without the stops, but you could easily add those or ask for custom. I'm sure there are similar wood workers making such spacing shelves.)

You set the bar too high for me! I’m 65 and don’t have your energy! However, we do what we can and today is a proud day for us. I usually purchase my tomatoes to can, and I will still be doing that…but today I put up 9 quarts of my homegrown tomatoes! We can about 100 quarts each year but I grew these from seed and nurtured them until today. Thank you for your continuing inspiration! Next year we will double the garden space! Scrape me off the ceiling, I’m so happy!!!! ♥️👍🙏🇺🇸🤓

Before I even watch this video I want to thank Ben for my potato harvest. I’m an Idaho girl living in Ohio. I had such terrible luck with growing potatoes that I stopped trying years ago. Then I saw how successful you were at container potatoes accidentally!! I could hardly talk about anything else . My loving family gifted me with 6, 10 gallon grow bags for Christmas just for potatoes. Today I harvested the first bag. The biggest is just palm sized but it is perfect and they taste amazing! Thank You so much for inspiring me to try this method!

I know it is a lot of work, but I think you all are living your best life. I hope all the boys know how very fortunate they are, and Buggy is precious and also a very lucky country girl to live that life and have all those brothers to take care of her. Ben and Meg you are both doing a great job with giving your children a good life and teaching them valuable lessons for the rest of their lives.

Being sick of a food is one of my favorite parts of having a garden. You get to have so much of something you love you get sick of it, but then you have a rest of not eating it until the next season so you’re ready for it all over again.

We head butt and then he apologizes 😂😂 Laughing together through all four of our children and now our 9! grandchildren, praising and thanking God for all the blessings He bestows on us and our beautiful family. Just keep laughing and loving until the end and walk into eternity with our Heavenly Father. I’m probably stumbling but all that to say….I enjoy your channel. Keep up the GOOD work!! Canning 56 pints of corn is a HUGE task. Lucky you had help! I've been canning for 4 days now because my freezer died. I was thinking though--56 pints is indeed a huge job, but, if you think about it, that's actually just a bit more than a pint a week for a year. Man, that thought is overwhelming, isn't it? My compliments to you. You have been a canning machine.

“Eating so much watermelon that we are sick of it!” That is a problem that I would like to have! Meg, have you tried making pickled watermelon rinds? I did a huge jar with lots of whole spices and it turned out to be totally addictive!!! I used both apple cider vinegar and rice vinegar, sugar added with the spring water and boiled. I added chopped fresh Ginger, Broken up stick of cinnamon, whole allspice, multicolored peppercorns, Bayleaf, and a few small pinches of mixed pickling spice, a teeny tiny pinch of ground cloves because I could not find my whole cloves, small pinch of freshly grated nutmeg and some grated orange peel. To add more of a kick to it, I gave it a shake of red pepper flakes. But know that the longer it sits in that bone in the refrigerator, the hotter those red pepper flakes get. You can find the basic recipe portion on lots of KZbin videos. I just chose the spices that I liked. Enjoy!

Please cook turnips like this. Cook them in water as if you were going to mash them. Cook them until they are fork tender, drain the water and put the turnips in a frying pan with pork lard or bacon grease. Add a spoon of sugar to cut the bitterness of the turnip. They are so good this way. Also they are good in chicken pot pie coupled with potatoes and leeks carrots and peas. Please try this before you give them up. I love your family? Keep the videos coming.

the dirt under the weed fabric should be equally good for the next crop you plant... i always add some grass cutting under ours for it to rot down under the weed fabric or tarp depending what im growing.

Here’s a suggestion for all that watermelon. If you’re sick of eating it you can juice it and then either freeze or can the juice then you get the fresh taste of watermelon all winter long

You inspired me. I can't do everything but I can do something! After yesterdays video I dehydrated onions from our garden to make onion powder 😱🎉 Thank you for sharing your story ❤️💕

I dry all my onions that I grow. And I harvest them while the tops are still green. And I cut them up too and dry them. That way I have onions all year long. And I grow green onions from seed and then harvest and cut them all up and dry the whole thing. Then have green onions for the whole year. Got half a gallon of green onions dried this year.

My corn was a giant flop in this insane Texas weather, but I can buy some in bulk. You’ve inspired me to preserve some even though I didn’t grow it. ♥️

Meg, you have built an amazingly stocked pantry this year!!! Well done girl👌 It's been years since I had a garden and canned. I still have my 2 pressure canners. I'd get one canner going and would start filling my 2nd canner so I could start it as my 1st canner was cooling down. Sometime you should get a 2nd canner as it gets the job done faster! Great melon harvest. My mom used to get a cushaw every year to can and make cushaw pies (tastes like pumpkin pies). Delicious pies!

I have 2 canners too. One was my grams. The other I found at a yard sale for 5.00. It's a twin to my grams. Both from the 60's. And there has been quite a few times that I have both canners going. I have 2 large burners. Especially when I'm canning tuna. Twice as fast! Been canning for 44 years so far. And I'm not stopping till they have to pry it out of my dead hands!

@@loritanner4478 It definitely pays off to have two canners if you have large amounts of produce and meat to can. Bet your canned tuna is delicious! I've never canned meat before, only vegs and fruit. If I had produce to can again, I'd have to get new rubber gaskets as I'm sure mine have dry rotted by now. One of mine was my mom's canner and I bought the other one, which both are MirroMatic. Don't know if they still make those. My mom's was bought back in the 70s, and mine was bought in the 80s. So both have served mom and me well!🥰

Fun day! Yep, I’m team landscape fabric too! Love it! I’ve also been clearing out small trees, branches and vines, raising the canopy… it’s looking so much better! I just wish your son wouldn’t get that close to the chipper.
