The fact is that the engine needs to inhale and exhale an amount of air per hp. A) Bigger valves B) More lift/longer duration C) Faster opening and closing of said valves, as in roller cam behavior over relaxed, lazy, stock valve speeds D) Removing all restrictions possible from the intake and exhaust plumbing, even if the gain is somewhat minimal, as in, long tube headers. Then, temperature management: E) Biggest aftercooler possible. Dropping temperature to ambient is never bad for power. F) Aggressive cooling of the heads to enable maximum timing G) Aggressively insulating exhaust tract to preserve the precious exhaust gas energy to the turbine H) insulating the turbine housing More on breathing: I) Huge intake and exhaust ports to make sure they are not the bottlenecks. J) air intake that is fed from a reliable high pressure zone. K) large exhaust pipe diameter after the turbo(s) and Borla-style or just straight-through mufflers to reduce pumping losses. I have more to add, but it needs to be patented, so I will just leave this as is.

The big thing: 1. Make the NA motor more powerful BEFORE forced induction, so the "multiplier" of boost has a bigger impact. (Example: intake, cam, headers, P&P) The little things: 1. Size of the turbo compressor/turbine matters. Make sure it meets the airflow needs of the power you want to get to. 2. Reduce intake air temps (IATs) via intercooling, active chilling, intercooler spray, etc. The cooler/denser air makes more power and is safer. 3. Make sure your downpipe and exhaust are as large as you can possibly fit after the turbo. More is always better, and spool is better.

@Richard Holdener - How do most people apply what you're suggesting to their own cars? When you apply your formulas, the engine is connected directly to the dyno. Most people don't remove the engine from their cars to get a dyno reading. They get their dyno readings at the tire. I used the calculation on my car to see what I would get. My 3.7 V6 Mustang produces about 250 horsepower and about 240 foot lbs of torque stock. I Procharged it and at 9 lbs of boost my car now produces 420 horsepower and 352 foot pounds of torque on a Mustang Dyno. Stock my car my car produces about 17 horsepower at sea level. Under boost it produces about 17.7. The formula seems to work as an approximation. I think what happens is that the drivetrain losses decrease as a proportion while the power used to spin the supercharger increases as RPM increases. I would think that the horsepower per pound of boost would increase at the tire with a turbo because it is more efficient than the supercharger.

We're seeing growing popularity in our platform with turbos as well and seeing some really fast LTX 4th gen cars. I'd love to see you share a bit of love with our older LTX, maybe even including ditching the notoriously problematic Opti distributor and showing us how to make the Holley system work for us. LS PCM swaps ate becoming more and more popular with us but I'd kinda like to see an aftermarket ECU working and throwing some boost love at the LTX! Thanks man!

Richard Holdener awesome! I’m going after Lisa’s record and I want to do it with a real Saturn not a general motors 2.2 eco-tech. So for I think my biggest restriction is going to be RPM as I do not have the aftermarket support for different gear ratios. I know the connecting rods that hold up to 30 pounds of boost but realistically long RPM runs probably 18. I plan on running the 1.9 L twin cam from a 95 to 98 the bottom and from a 2002 because it comes with the girdle when did tray and some rods. And a manual trans out of the single cam car . Over the years I have talked to Turk about this and he’s answered all my questions except for one because he doesn’t have experience in it and I see you do. Well, in your theory, the 300hp engine running three atmospheres (29.4psi boost) would make 900hp. To account for compressor efficiency, exhaust restriction (cant always run an open 4 inch exhaust outside of the dyno) id assume an efficiency of around 87% (first atmosphere of boost is usually almost double, but the second and third usually get up in cylinder pressure and you get octane limited) so 300hp of engine with two 87% efficient atmospheres of boost at 261hp each would make it a 822hp combination.

I remember the article you wrote about the Kenne Bell 302 that made 500hp. A few of the cam sizes got messed up in the dyno charts but I think the conclusion was the XE274HE was the one you used to get the 500hp. What was the compression of that engine? Could the combination be improved on today? I would also be interested in seeing what OEM ECUs have done to power through the years.

Is it true that you don't want torque converter stall speed to be too high on a turbocharged engine because you need to load the engine to make boost?
@pmd7771969
@pmd7771969 Жыл бұрын
You need to take full advantage of intercooler e85 and boost so 1400 hp to perhaps 2000 from a 427, 454, 496 is doable. Boost till you detonate. Bloodviking

Most engines that are streetable make 1 to 1.2 hp per c I. So if you can do that on 9.1 mechanical compressi9n then boost your combo to 8 psi then pump gas works and you won't double hp but it's still alot. So 600 is obtainable, so on 20 psi boost to double your initial n . A figure run e85 and get 800 to 1000 hp from e85. Bloodviking

Using this theory, would it be better for throttle response to use a pair of 300hp turbos on T2 flanges as opposed to a bigger 600hp single on a T4 flange? Overall the size combined of the T2's flanges are slightly larger than the T4 so it would be interesting to read your opinion.

a single at 600 hp on a 5.3L V8-that would be plenty responsive. So would the smaller T2s, but probably too small-even for just 600 hp

@@richardholdener1727 I should've been more specific in my original question to you Richard, my apologies. I have a 1JZ so only 2.5L to play with. I know a 600hp T4 turbo makes them laggy off the line (3582, 3076, etc.) so I'm looking at twin 2860s or 2867s off the T2.

there actually is no point of diminishing returns, if you can increase the boost pressure while keeping intake temps under control you will make more power. I know people who run over 40psi of boost with subaru engines and e85 fuel, that is just what it takes to make an STI run 9 second passes i guess lol.

The Y pipe diameter will not likely change spool time-and its difficult to measure on the engine dyno-the load is artificial and not like on teh street or chassis dyno. Spool rate is primarily determined by the power output of the na motor vs the tubos sizzing

I know that my CV axles in the Saturns are rated up to 375 HP so that part, I should be ok, but I'm going to do .20 over, 3rd generation 6 counterweight crank and lower tie plate, ARP main and head studs, a stage one port and polished head with polished combustion chambers , port and polished intake manifold with port matching , bigger throttle body, dual intake cams, mild de shrouding of the intake valves, mildest bowl blending offered, and adding narrow blended 1-2 mm valve seats and shim the valve springs to .15'' with 14 PSI of Boost, and I haven't decided yet if i'm going to run it on E85 , unless you can tell me how to safeguard my fuel supply parts to run it safely, thanks, if u can let me know, always enjoy watching your great work and great channel.. ;)
