I just finished my first read through of the series last night. I loved it. The “slog” didn’t really bother me that much with the exception of book 10 I think it was. That’s the only book it really felt like everyone was just sitting and waiting for 800 pages.

You are perfectly correct. The slog isn’t as bad as people say it is, however book 10 is certainly the lowest point of the series.

Nice summary! I have an issue with this thing of "one dimensional badguys". Because reality is that some people will always become really bad ruthless people. Demandred is not like that, but for example Lanfear or Semirhage is. Their base personality traits are really very simply put what makes them evil. Semirhage is a sadistic psychopath and Lanfear a raving narcissist uncapable of empathy. Some people are just not ever capable of "humanity" and its very plausible that the most capable of these kind of individuals would be ripe for the dark one.

A Strike at Shayol Ghul was originally published in the con program from Balticon 30 in 1996. I still have my signed copy from that conference.

Ravens is actually the 1st prologue in the kindle edition of Eye of the World. Then it went into Dragonmount and I had zero idea what was going on. It was very jarring. I absolutely adore New Spring. Fell in love with Siuan Sanche in that book.

I didn’t know about „new spring“ until mid 2020 when I started to keep up to date with the tv series since it was in its Last stretches. Edit: am I the only one who got like 5 ad breaks? Two Before the Video, two in the middle and another at the end. That’s a lot of crap to go through to watch a video.

I started my reread of WoT so I'd be prepped for the show and bought the Kindle edition. I had no idea about Ravens at the time and was confused because I had no recollection of this prologue, and thought I had missed something. A little research let me know I hadn't completely lost my mind 😅. Though there are still plenty of details I had forgotten over time.

I am about half way through reading The Crippled God a 3rd time, and I just got a couple of Gene Wolfe books I haven't read for years to reread, but this sounds interesting

I know the guy that drew that artwork from the beginning of the video. It's Paul from Aradani Studios, he's a regular art vendor at Jordancon (usually dressed as Rand). They have several pieces that are officially licensed. I talked to him just last month at Renfest.

New Spring was the first I read from WoT and it hooked me. I had to buy the books immediately after (and it was only 3 years ago).

New Spring is perfect to read as a starter for your first re-read. Or, as a well needed break in the middle of "the slog". There is also "Warrior of the Altaii". It is not WoT, but it is written by RJ and is sort of a super early prototype version of WoT. It got rejected by the publisher and lay on a shelf for decades before they released it as sort of a fan service.

I’d almost recommend reading River of Souls between books 13 and 14. It’s a bit of a dilemma: yes, it ruins the reveal in book 14, but River of Souls also has its own reveal (when you realize at the end who you’ve been reading about) which is really cool. My argument is basically this: If you read River prior to aMoL, then you get to see what Demandred’s been up to and better understand his motivations, which makes his appearance in aMoL better. Treat it almost as a second prologue to aMoL.

The original prologue to the Eye of the World is the ONLY reason I was able to last through the first few chapters of the series. I set the stage for what was actually the pivotal moment of the transition from the Age of Legends to the 3rd age. The concepts of use of the One Power and just how demi god like these people were held me so I could slog through the slow build up in the EOTW. If I had read Ravens I would not have even made it to the meat of EOTW. On eof my huge disappointments is that there appears there is no plan to do this in the show. It is almost sacrilegious to me. That Prologue SETS the whole table for the series. Without that context, understanding the real power of Lews Therin, the devastation of the madness, and how Ishamael set the stage in his arrogance for the rebirth of Lews Therin. The whole damn series is about this moment. I'll watch and probably love the show but I will always feel like they missed the mark by not including it.

That sounds so cool. I wanted to give you an update from me as well. I am now 53% into listening and reading the Crossroads of Twilight. I also have been wondering if any stories will be written, or have been written about the children of the main characters. That would be very cool.

That would be cool but I think AMOL is as far as it will go. Jordan had more plans but there weren't notes for those.

As it stands right now there will be no more stories written in the wheel of time world. But if the TV-series is super successful we can only hope that this will change.

My guess is even if(hopefully) the show is a smash, I think it's more likely we get spinoff shows but no more books.

I'm still not sold on Rosamund Pike as Moiraine. Moiraine should have cool crystalline voice and be very short. Most of her character was built around the image of a "little porcelain doll". I could see Rosamund as Leane Sharif, or Alanna Mosvani or even Siuan Sanche. Claire Foy (from season 1 and 2 of The Crown) would have made the perfect Moiraine Damodred I think.

Books 1-6 then NS then 7-14 in that order, but it doesn’t really matter when you read NS but i think you will get more out of it after about 6 books
