I love the Chinquapin Oak, after the prunning it looks like a proud young knight and I think the twist at the bottom makes it even better!

I love that tree with the cute little leaves that are still on the tree in the winter!! If there ever was a winter bonsai show, that tree would be amazing to show there!!! ❤

I find this whole "sacrificial bud" thing intriguing. I love the idea of letting the tree push out that course, unwanted growth, and THEN cutting it back to where you want. When you you plan on doing the second pruning?
@scheers10014 күн бұрын
From late spring on I think is a good moment to cut back the course growth(when the first flush is hardened). Don’t do it after(about) half summer. As long the new shoots have enough time to set/harden off before fall, it should be good.

@ excellent, makes sense. Thanks!

Hi Nigel! Great work today 😃, this weird twist on the base is typical for oaks I notised. It happens when tree is super young, and eighter base gets exposed and this twisted part it’s just top of the tap root, OR the top of the tree dies off, and secoundary branches are taking over. Anyway it happens only when trees are super young, and they do grow out of this.

We have your cold weather here also in the windy city. We were at 9F/-12C this morning. Definitely tea weather. We are expecting snow also.

English oaks do not retain the leaves during winter. From the european species of oak I know (basically those who exist in my country), it might be a Quercus pyrennaica (Pyrenean oak)

As you pointed out, Black Locust grow chaotically; it isn’t naturally flowing. Will the natural structure of the species be loss with the pruning? Look forward to the spring branching of all!!! Stay warm.

P.S. How are the fowl making out with all the cold and snow? Best to your wife, the keeper of the chicks & ducks!

whats the idea on the winter pruning? I saw you prune to second buds or the "sacrificial buds" while keeping the ones you want to develop the lower ones. When do you plan to prune these sacrificial ones off? Once those have created leaves or more growth?
@Thimbrethil15 күн бұрын
The idea is to let sacrificial buds grow in spring, and later cut those to desired buds for this secound flash of growth in the year
@klytuko15 күн бұрын
@Thimbrethil I might be too new for this but why not cut to the intended buds already? Doesnt it just waste trees energy to grow the sacrificial ones eapecially when the sap flow going through also makes the wanted branch grow thicker
@wpgamingtv372615 күн бұрын
@klytuko perhaps by removing that energy,the internodes will be shorter on the next flush.

Hello Nigel and Healthy and happy New Year. I have just watched a nice video on the English oak bruning. Question: I have to repot my bougenvilleas to make a forrest out of them. Can I do it in the winter? They are producing lots of greenery, long little thin branches. Pls let. me know your opinion. Michael Eisner
@TheBonsaiZone13 күн бұрын
I think so Michael, as long as they have good growing conditions, they should do well!

I have a friend who works with invasive species control. here in BC black locust is considered a problematic invasive so he removes them for municipalities. anyway, he asked me if i wanted to dig some up for bonsai and I said absolutely! it has an interesting growth habit and im interested in experimenting with it. Would you do some more videos with black locust? id be interested to see how they should be worked.
