Adding a capacitor to your electric fence energizer significantly increases the zap factor! You can find capacitors like the one described here on eBay and Amazon. Search for "ceramic capacitor .01uf 3kv".

Both of those fence charges you have take house AC current and step it up through a transformer to a much higher voltage. I don't think they make straight AC fence chargers like that anymore, since they can be very lethal.

Good work Will, it's important to do the finger test

Thanks, I will trust you and tell my friends you already did the finger test. :)

The transformers are different between the two units. That capacitor is a basic lightning protection device... if the fence gets a sudden power zap it will channel as much of that power as it can to ground, in theory possibly saving the transformer from getting fried.

I don't know about a capacitor lightning protector as no way can it carry the current. Better is a MOV metal oxide varister to bleed off a charge at its voltage rating . They are in surge suppressors. MOVs can fail and start fires. They are illegal in the Navy . During Zoomy they started a fire on a carrier.

Good video. However little you think you know about electronics, I must know less as I learned from your video. I'd already fried my multimeter, but I was smart enough to have rigged a tester by using a piece of heavily insulated rubber and making a "handle" on an old piece of about 3/4" x 4' aluminum conduit. I hold onto the insulated handle and by putting the end on the ground, shorting the exposed conduit against a fence wire, and observing, I can see if it sparks. If it does, it's hot. I've checked a lot of fence with it. As for the finger test, I've been shocked enough times accidentally that I'm not going to touch a hot wire on purpose!

Those constant current fence chargers are no BS. Check the output with a florescent bulb. 2' or 4' works for me. One end in the dirt (ground) other pins on the wire. It will light up like normal. They WILL KILL a small animal. 2 squirrel & a 15 pound owl so far. Will also set dead grass on fire. They do not like to be grounded out for long or will burn up the cap or transformer.

Forgot to mention that rebar for a ground works for a year or so before corrosion takes its toll. If it bites you on the ground side there is a bad ground. I started using half of a real copper coated ground rod. No problem since.

You know the have a cheep tester that will tell you how many k volts you are getting rather than burning up a multi meter or using your finger

Does the energizer that you took the capacitor off still work and is it like the one recommended for pets now?

Finger Test NOT recommended for those over 50.

man just what i have too! my box has a dog on it tho but what did your ground wire go to?

Walk Wigglin, I wrapped the ground wire around a piece of 4’ rebar that’s hidden by the tall grass.

Confirmed ! You are not an electronics expert, study the operation of the capacitor in alternating current and then you will know what mod make to increase the current 😉
