The number of books you have read this year is a little shocking to me as I think I've only read about 2 books this year! I've set myself a 2025 goal though to try and read at least 12 books next year, so one a month. As I used to adore reading as a kid & teen then somewhere in my early 20s replaced my reading time with other things but I wanna try find that reading time again!

It’s hard not to compare yourself. Whatever you’re able to read is great! I often watch people online who read 200+ books per year and if I dwell on it too much I’ll feel crap but instead it’s about enjoying the books I *do* read!

if you only managed 2 books then try a smaller goal for next year:) so you're more likely to achieve it.

Also if I was to recommend one book I've read in recent years, it would be strong female character by Fern Brady! It's about her life growing up into her 30s as an undiagnosed Autistic. She's a Scottish comedian who I've been a fan of long before she was even on taskmaster. I've been attending her gigs back when it was little tiny venues and now she's doing gigs in sold out theatre's! I would definitely recommend her book - I laughed, I cried, it has it all lol. As someone who is also Autistic, there was a lot of aspects which I could relate to!

Catching up on your vlognukah series now that life has settled back to normality 😂 I'm interested in that murderbot series, I'll have to add it to my TBR. I just got back into pleasure reading this year (read a lot of non-fiction while pregnant/postpartum, she's nearly 2) and warmed myself up with some Terry Pratchett short stories. Then I discovered a trilogy called Caraval by Stephanie Garber. Oh my gosh. Tore through them, every chapter ends on a cliffhanger! I love children's literature, all the magic and whimsy but add some adult plot and themes and I have discovered a new fave. Caraval is magic, wonder, fear, theatre, true love, lies and secrets, scheming plot of honesty intentions and heartbreaks, good, evil, and grey. With a satisfying happy ending too.

Good influencer vibes: hearing about your audiobook experiences encouraged me to give them a shot and I have been loving it - have listened to several short story collections and nonfiction audiobooks which both work much better for me in audio than traditional reading. Currently listening to and really enjoying Salt on Your Tongue by Charlotte Runcie which is part memoir, part exploration of women's connection to the sea. Alongside the two massive ebooks I am trying to finish before the end of the year, oops.

This was actually one of my worst reading years since Covid. I started tracking my books in a journal in 2019 (first year of teaching, so I only got to 29) Usually I get to 100 or so, but my mental health has been really bad the past couple of years, plus I am taking care of my sick grandfather, and had to move and get a new job, and I’m only at 42. It’s nice to be reminded that not meeting my (admittedly lofty) goal doesn’t mean it’s not worth celebrating. My mental health is improving, I am much happier with my life now than I was a few months ago, and that’s all that matters! Congrats on 49 books Hannah! It’s always thrilling to hit a new PR! Hoping to hit a new one next year for me 🎉

And also, this year I decided to reread Harry Potter and what a good decision it was. incredible books and major fomo for not living in that universe!

I also love Mona Awad, All’s Well and 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl await you. For a non tropey contemporary romance I'd recommend You, again by Kate Goldbeck. I'm currently reading it and I LOVE IT. It doesn't feel predictable, you see the characters ageing and going through stuff before they start a friendship and later get together. It's also set in NYC, feels like a 90s movie.

I loved Lessons in Chemistry so much! Some of my faves from the last year - Legends and Lattes/Bookshops and Bonedust (both super cosy low stakes fantasy), The Stars Too Fondly (queer teens in space trying to solve a decades old mystery), and The Forest of Stars (aimed at tweens maybe? Characters are about 10 ish. I really enjoyed the audiobook - a magical kid runs away to join the circus after a personal tragedy, but it starts to turn sinister and people keep getting hurt, so her and her friends have to get to the bottom of the "accidents" and save the day)

Thus far, I've had 6 5-star reads this year: 1 & 2. Mythos and Heroes by Stephen Fry, read by Stephen Fry. Stephen Fry has the best audio book voice, I could listen to him read anything. 3. Snow, Glass, Apples by Neil Gaiman and Colleen Doran. Gorgeously drawn re-telling of Snow White. A bit gory, so if you're sensitive, beware! 4. Inside the Mind of Sherlock Holmes by Benoit Dahan and Cyril Lieron. OMG, this was amazing! Amazingly drawn graphic novel where you follow a red string through the case. Throughout the book there are clues for you to find by rolling, bending and looking through pages. 5. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. A mystery seen through the eyes of an autistic boy. Describes how an autistic brain works very well. 6. Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett. It's a funny fantasy book, what more can I say? And it has dragons! Honarably mentions: 1-3. Divine Might, Pandora's Jar and The Ancient Guide to Modern Life, all by Natalie Haynes. 4. The Warm hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden. 5. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. 6. Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett. 7. The Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich. I listened to books 28-31 this year, they are hilarious and the narrator is fantastic.

It’s been a while since I read it but I remember it having lots of elements of mythology (the whole thing is centered around a labyrinth if I remember correctly). As someone from Eastern Europe who grew up in a country that was so horribly affected by communism I am always in awe how people seem to look at this idealised world of what a true socialist country would look like and never look how all real live examples have failed spectacularly and have committed some of the biggest crimes against humanity. I obviously agree that we need socialist policies to make sure all members of society have a real chance at a fulfilled live but people need to stop living in this fantasy world where socialism as described in books like the transgender issue would work in real live. Just as much of a fable as trickle down economics.

I also LOVED Murderbot, found The Fifth Season so fascinating and well done, enjoyed Lessons in Chemistry, and didn't love Tomorrow X3 but I fully agree with your review - I think I maybe need to like characters more than I did there. My biggest recommendation is the Wayfarers series (the long way to a small angry planet) by Becky Chambers. Found family vibes with super interesting scifi universe building, the four books have different but overlapping main characters and I cried in every one. There are at least 2 middle aged mum main characters (book 3 and 4, don't have to be read in order but I'd recommend it) My top recommendations I read this year: Black Sun (between earth and sky trilogy by Rebecca Roanhorse) book 3 released this year but Australia release was delayed and I was so desperate for it I repeatedly contacted the publisher 😅 fantasy I guess with a pre colonisation America feel? I bought in hard Taboo by Hannah Ferguson, newly released feminist memoir/manifesto/exploration?? of the gender related taboos that still impact us. I read a lot of sci fi earlier this year. For a romp with depth I'd recommend John Scalzi's interdependency series. My bigger recommendation is Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch series (trilogy plus a couple of spin offs). Starts out very serious and honestly I found the first half of the first book difficult to follow, but it slowly unveils incredibly interesting universe building - in particular in relation to gender, and then builds from there. It also gets delightfully weird and funny, multiple laugh out loud moments I didn't see coming. Seriously the unfolding social and gender and identity explorations that develop through these 5 books make for incredible discussion, could say more but I don't want to spoil anything!!
