Organist Alan Price quit due to fear of flying - a key element if you wanted to conquer America! - and went on to a much more British sound. The Animals at their inception as a pop phenomenon were serious contenders, behind the voice of Eric Burdon -- surely one of the greatest white blues singers there has ever been.

He went to America a great deal. The 'fear of flying thing was an excuse. Price and the manager (who later famously also ripped off Hendrix) together allegedly cut the rest of the band out of the royalties to the song. (The manager had an idea to make another group with Price and this would fund it.) The rest of the band had been told Price's name alone would go on the record (the arrangement was very much a collaberative effort) because 'there wasn't room for them all and we have to produce them quick'. The band were naive and didn't know until the fisrt cheques for the record came in (or didn't ). Price then basically ran away. He left the band flat and in need of a keyboardist during a tour. Not long after he was in New York with Bob Dylan. The flying thing was simply a cover story.

As a former TV guy, I have to say you have the best (directorially speaking) reaction videos that I've seen. Some reactors are best known for their actual reactions, some for their commentary, but you have the best ideas for screen composition and editing. You don't always execute them correctly but you have the right ideas. To me this distinguishes you from the others, BTW your split screen is very effective and original for reaction videos. The song is about a brothel in New Orleans. "The House Of The Rising Sun" was named after its occupant Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant (which means "Rising Sun" in French) and was open for business from 1862 (occupation by Union troops) until 1874, when it was closed due to complaints by neighbors.

There are 3 or 4 brothels that are candidates for the original House of the Rising Sun. The actual addresses are online and not too hard to find. I addition, there is/was a women's prison whose gate was adorned with a graphic of the rising sun.

A few FYI's for you (thanks for posting your reaction to THIS song by the way): In an interview in the '60's Little Richard was asked what was happening in England after he toured there. L.R's response was, "The Animals are #1 over there and, they're the greatest group I've ever heard". Yup, you read that correctly. L.R. said THAT. Not the Stones, not The Yardbyrds or Beatles etc...the Animals. Also, Nina Simone, while touring the U.K., ripped Eric Burdon apart about making millions on this song that was a minor hit for her in the U.S but, was a smash hit for the animals everywhere, apparently, cursing at him like a drunken sailor. Burdon told her that she should be thanking them for paving the way for her popularity in the U.K. Simone and Burdon became good friends after that encounter... : )

And you're right...the playing was absolutely incredible by all the musicians. Thay banged this one out in perfect harmony and double time. I was 14 when these guys broke out with this single from an album they would soon release! The band was part of an army of bands from England that invaded the US, right after the Beatles hit our shores! Bc of songs like this, they were very, very competitive with the Beatles! Their only drawback was that they basically relied on covering other artist, such as this song (taken from an old blues/spiritual artist from the American South) and others like Sam Cooke's BRING IT ON HOME TO ME (still a favorite of mine from him&them)! But, they made plenty of great music, don't get me wrong! Like so many English bands that crossed the Atlantic, they became well received by American teens and most had unlimited talent! If i had the time, OR, SPACE, I'd list a few for u, but, honestly, any band from '64 on thru the '60's, would send goosebumps down ur spine! If u ever have a moment, take a private listen to the Dave Clark Five's BECAUSE! I'm 70 now but that song still makes me teary with memories!🤗😘🙌

To put this in context, the "Rising Sun" was a house in New Orleans early in the 1900's,and maybe earlier. In current terms, it was a "sporting house." The history adds to the story.

I saw The Animals way back in, like 1967 or 68 in a big show in Pittsburgh, PA. The main act was Herman's Hermits and there was a not so well-known group (you may have heard of them) called The Rolling Stones as well. There were something like a half dozen groups in the show. It was quite good.

Fab Gear - The song is a very old Blues/Folk traditional that possibly originated in England with different lyrics, though a similar theme. It was being performed in the US as early as the 1850s. It's been recorded by several artists before The Animals, including Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, and Bob Dylan. During the huge Folk music movement in the UK (they called it Skiffle) of the late 1950s, Lead Belly's large catalogue of music was heavily mined by the acts of the day. Most likely, this is where The Animals heard it and adapted it into their Blues Rock style. The House of the Rising Sun is basically, a brothel, and the song has also been sung as a warning to young girls that it's not a place to end up. In this case, the House has been frequented by the person in the song and has led him down a path of ruin and self-destruction. It's exactly the right sounding song for The Animals, reflecting their early life growing up in the coal based area of their native Newcastle. So glad you found this. Not from TV. Mimed from their one take recording.and was filmed in 1964 or 65 as part of a UK colour film called Pop Gear for paying theatre release. This explains the early high quality color images we luckily have for this mimed from the record performance and also a few other top UK only music artists from when the film was made. KZbin has quite a few segments from this UK movie Pop Gear with the US contribution being to re title it Go Go Mania and add a few intro segments to satisfy the US audience. A KZbin search for Pop Gear Go Go Mania shows the segments : kzbin.info?search_query=pop+gear+go+go+mania The intro by TCM explains the background of the film. While some of these segments were likely to be shown on US Colour TV much later , the source would originally be this high quality film. Rising Sun is the standout, but the Honeycombs with Have I the Right is a landmark too, In 1964 images not recorded on film would be much lower quality videotape, not the notable quality images used here. Especially with the inferior US NTSC standards often called Never The Same Colour. So lucky the film was made instead of relying on low standard video tape recordings that were usually taped over anyway to save tape cost money or made by filming a TV screen with poor quality results. I would be amazed to see any video recording from 1964 up to this standard of image quality. A better sound source can easily replace or lesser quality film track early source in KZbin postings these days. These films mainly used mimed performances as the vast majority of theatre audiences wanted to hear the music performance as they knew it from the records. Hope this helps people who have the colorized and vidoetape theories that usually pop up.

EVERYONE goes nuts for those organ solos, and how can they not? They're soul-stirring. The clip is from a movie called "Go Go Mania" (in Britain it was called "Pop Gear"). The whole movie is just a showcase for various British rock acts of the time, all filmed in these fantastic sets, and hosted by a guy who was VERY popular, but after his death everyone found out he was a SERIOUS weirdo. The Animals, and a couple of other acts in the film were big in Britain and in the US, but many of the other acts were only known over there, and are really great. It's a really fun movie.

I totally understand your difficulty in grasping all the lyrics. In the mid 60's when all the British groups and their songs hit the U.S. it was hard for most of us (I'm 77) to understand all the lyrics also. Many of the Brits came from areas of the UK that spoke dialects unknown by us. Mick Jagger songs created arguments over what he was actually saying in many of his songs early on. This is one of the greatest rock/(Blues) songs ever. I was 18 at that time and still get chills. Burdons voice and that organ will last forever.

The Rising Sun is the nickname of pubs, bars and brothels in England n Great Britian....that's where you go until the Sun Rises....Eric Burdon was 23 in this and this exactly what the recorded version sounds like because musicians didn't use voice enhancements then.....they were true singers.......NOT LIKE TODAY'S singers using digital enhancements......pitiful.....btw...thanks for not interrupting every 20 seconds...just subscribed...so impressed you caught the keyboard moved forward at the end....they actually moved him during the song off video while he never missed a note with him appearing in front at the end..look forward to more of your reactions...
