John Phillips, who is the tall guy with the guitar, is one of the outstanding songwriters of the 60's, like Lennon/McCartney, Paul Simon, Smokey Robinson, and Jagger/Richards... another great Mamas/Papas song is "Twelve Thirty"

Mama Cass' sang way bigger than she looked. Her voice was a miracle. It was the tide that floats the whole song. The special thing is that it is so huge and atmospheric that she can sing super loud in harmony without getting in the way of the lead singer. Also she's just so sweet and funny! Listen to a lot of her. You won't regret it.

Written by the late John Phillips. He was the Papa. Michelle Phillips is the only surviving member. She is 1 of the Mamas. The members were in 2 bands in my hometown San Francisco before forming. After the break up of the marriage and the band, Michelle became an actress. Family tree . In short, The Mamas and The Papas are related to The Beach Boys, Wilson Phillips, the jailed Danny Masterson, Billy Baldwin and his son-in-law Justin Bieber. The Mamas and Papas also lead to Van Halen. Suggested videos : 1 Wilson Phillips sing You're in Love live in Manila. 2 The Beach Boys perform Don't Worry Baby. 3 Van Halen performs I'll Wait live in Montreal, in 1984.

Mama Cass was totally amazing!!! She was a fantastic singer and she was responsible for the band "Crosby, Stills,Nash and sometimes Young"! 👍 They first sang together in her kitchen and she encouraged them!!! Each of them were already very famous from other bands they were in. Their first gig was Woodstock!!!👍 If you've never heard them, they are one of the greatest Harmonizing groups to ever exist!!!👌 They are a deep and fantastic rabbit hole!!!👍✌😎

The audio of this version is good because they are lip-syncing to the studio version. Most of the TV shows from the 60s had the bands lip-sync when on TV. Notice none of the "singers" have a microphone. No mic for the guitar, either. And where exactly is the tambourine sound coming from?

Loved this version when it cam out in 1966 and it still is one of my favourites tunes, as indeed as are many of the Mamas and Papas songs. Back in those days we did not have videos to the extent that they are now and it is only recently I saw them for the first time on KZbin. Michelle Phillips visual impact on me was immediate. Her story and that of the Mamas and Papas is well known, however for me this and other video recordings of her will remain very happy memories which I revisit often.

Most of the text in California's Dreamin' is a true story. John Phillips who wrote the song was in New York. It was a cold autumn. John Phillips hated the cold he was used to the climate in from California. John Phillips and Michelle Phillips were newlyweds and the year was 1963. Do walked in New York and came father to St. Patrick's Cathedral. John hated the church but Michelle wanted to go in and John followed. their experience in New York, the cold, the fall and the church inspired john to write Dalifornia Dreamin'.

The sound is clear b/c the video's poster substituted a studio track for the original TV audio. The clue is that this is in stereo. '60s TV was strictly monaural as no one's TV could play stereophonic. The track matches perfectly b/c the Ms and Ps were lip-syncing to that exact same track during this "live" performance, which explains the absence of microphones. Sounds great, I'm not complaining.
