Striped bass are interesting because they are an anadromous species highly effected by water temps. Water temperature will determine their biological feeding clock and of recent years we have had el nino water temps and unusual ocean conditions changed by odd weather patterns. The video here on surf fishing stripers offers some great tips on reading sand bars and drop holes . Last two incoming to first outgoing is 100% on the money for when to fish as the holes are created however anglers have to be prepared for sand bars changing locations as swell and weather patterns shift these locations. What was one day might not be there after a big week of swell conditions and annual winter storms can change locations significantly. If a angler paid attention here they should be able to take these key concepts and apply it to there local surf locations containing striped bass, the info provided here is text book correct.

@@MoreThanFishing Striped bass are a great species for anglers to enjoy however we have ongoing legislative measures in California where"WATER RIGHTS" have become a threat and Striped bass are still being falsely blamed as the cause of other species depleted numbers as water resources dry up.. To date Anglers/ advocates have been able to defeat 3 Legislative AB Measures proposed to eradicate striped bass in California but i fear we will see more measures as California seeks to hide the real truth regardign water of water rights using smoke and mirror tactics . Ocean fishing license sales are also at a very low point in California and the DFW push is to convert anglers to large mouth bass fishing given the lucrative amount of money made off the tournaments, merchandise and related sales to this non native species. Simply put Large mouth bass fishing makes significantly more income than striped bass and is significantly easier to regulate. California seeks to drain more water resources from anadromous fish species then put the blame on striped bass as the cause . 2004-2006 i did juvenile index studies of both Striped bass and King salmon in the California Delta and these species having over a hundred years of cohabitation were in balance with record high juvenile numbers of each species proving successful spawning of both species then the "WATER RESOURCE GAMES" came to a peak. Vast acreage of California Delta water was pumped south and to farm fields and species numbers declined. WE have also seen actions such as the Prospect slough disaster AB measure 1806 where Tens of thousands of striped bass were killed in September of 2008 and anglers were initially told to stay back at gun point by officials then when exposed we as advocates were allowed access this slough where the water was being drained saving over 1800 adult striped bass . The losses taken however are still being felt by anglers and there was of course no apologies. The DFG itself was busted for mismanagement of striped bass stamp funds when California required a striped bass stamp. These funds were used for Water fowl hunters as the DFG paid farmers to flood fields and offer hunting. To date the Court ordered restitution has never been honored. I have been a angler, advocate and research assistant for striped bass and have concerns where the future of the species will be as California's water issues increase. So the "Thanks" should go out to all those such as yourself in support of this wonderful striped bass fishery we have in California and to all those giving both time ,money and educations efforts to support their future .

I attended the public zoom meeting hosted by DFG a couple of weeks ago regarding a petition for 20”-30” slot limit for stripers here in California. It turned out really well and hopefully it’ll get approved

@@jimbo4612 - that is interesting. Do you have a link to online publications regarding your study? I read a study that correlated predator effectiveness with low water levels due to the inability of the fry to disperse. But oddly, no one says the converse too loudly - more water means we will have good salmon survival rates and striped bass stocks. I don't have any skin in the game other than owning a fishing license and paying taxes. But I do like to understand the issues. Thanks!

@@MoreThanFishing Striped bass are still taking a bum rap for species declines as California Delta waters are depleted at an alarming rate . Biologically its been proven that over 80 species of California Delta birds ,fish, mammals and human error such as fish lost while water is pumped, consume highly valuable stocks of salmon yet striped bass are labeled as the major cause of the depletion's. Truth is as natural water flows changed , escapement rates of salmon changed. The DFG- DFW has made some efforts to take Coleman hatchery salmon to the ocean and also did some testing on pen rearing salmon in lower delta waters but money wise the DFW is facing severe challenges and those with a vested interest in water rights typically win when it comes to the Commissions votes on management of species. I have witnessed high mortality rates of salmon from issues such as releasing to much water which changes the oxygen balance. Twice at the nimbus dam on the American river, dam breaks killed 98% of the years salmon smolts there.Anglers saw sharp declines in returning year classes of salmon. Anglers asked why so few salmon and Striped bass were still labeled as the cause. I worked with Caption Rodger Thomas of the Golden Gate Salmon association up to his passing in 2017 and also served on the California Striped bass association for a number of years and have watched the long process of water rights winning out over California fisheries for decades however anglers should not lose hope. The DFW has some biologists with management ideas that would work if given a chance but the question seems to always fall back on water regulations and financial resources. Regarding a slot limit on striped bass the subject has been presented before however when it comes to license sales the game can change. Some anglers are not regular anglers in the know of species, they simply want to catch a big fish and a proposed limit can reduce license sales. As such its a fine balance to get anglers to buy a license then balance the fishery. Many anglers frustrated with heavy California regulations and having to pay heavy costs for licenses have simply quite fishing. California license costs are 76% more expensive than the nation average for a fishing license and the agency can't balance its books and claims lack of funds to build projects. More so its very frustrating when captions with 40-50 years experience on the water with extremely valuable data on numbers are utterly ignored at DFW meetings and the Commission goes behind closed doors to make their votes. Presented evidence gets ignored and the game goes on. Anglers who love the sport are gonna keep fishing even with high costs and regulations but the lack of resources is again a big issue per DFW statements to involved parties. Beyond a size limit I have proposed that select California waters be set off limits to striped bass angling during key spawning periods. There is a large number of anglers who trophy fish with intent of catch and release but it places a strain on spawning striped bass. Guides will scream their livelihood guiding anglers on these big bass would be lost but at some point the fish just need to be left alone and be given some protection along with some water. When i proposed this idea I got responses that striped bass numbers would explode threatening endangered salmon and other anadromous species numbers. This means those who screwed the flow of California Delta waters ultimately win. 100 plus years of cohabitation with high juvenile index numbers to prove the data loses to "WATER RIGHTS" Its a long subject when you discuss slot limits given all the working parts. I'm fully in favor of the idea to save bigger breeding females and also to expand the genetic gene pool of traditional striped bass . I do know from face to face discussions there are bureaucrats in the California Legislative which do not fish not care about fish but have high responsibilities to build water resources and this is where there interests rest, so how do we convince these members that our fisheries are a long cherished tradition that we wish to pass on to future generations, they see growth and productivity with expanded land development as a higher priority.

OK Jun, two old people sitting in the den and laughing like crazy! My wife can't see you but she loves listening to you during your vids! I can read the beach but not from watching videos. As a teen I grew up in Huntington Beach and learned from carrying a surfboard under my arm and walking out past the first break. When I hit the trough I would jump on my board and start paddling. When I hit the next sand bar the fin would hit it and I often ended up kissing my board on those sudden stops! By drawing the sand map you made it understandable and fun. Thanks for another great video!! Next time call your wife!!!
