Maybe, talk about how for _centuries_ throughout history we managed to live _very_ active lives (compared to those of many today). YET we'd _still_ insist that we use stays & corsets to shape our bodies _unnaturally_ to achieve proper fashion. We used the actual _bones_ of whales to create shapewear, underneath _all_ of our garments. YET, ever since we got rid of those layers, such as corsets, stays, NOW we demand ourselves to workout to get these ever changing desired "stylish" looks in our fashion. Why?? Isn't it much _more_ dangerous to our health to try to be some BODY that many of us aren't? Why not use modern shapewear to get the trendy looks AND eat better & exercise for our _own_ personal health benefits?? As a psychologist who specializes in treatment for trauma this constant need for “trigger warnings” horrifies me. Research indicates that trigger warnings not only don’t work to decrease anxiety, it may actually lead to an increased level of anxiety in those who avoid exposure to specific content. I support things like violence and sexuality being a part of the ratings system, but the seemingly infinite rise in anxiety and panic attacks in the US is real-world evidence the research is correct. It is NORMAL to experience distress, anger, grief, disgust, sorrow, happiness, etc. I have transitioned to death doulaship and people are no longer prepared for death in any way. As soon as our cognition allowed as a species we have portrayed the drama and related feelings of life in re-enactments, stories, plays, and folklore. After 200,000 years of practicing this trait it has become a way to expose and desensitize ourselves. Between avoidance practices and increased social isolation (even before COVID) we are creating a MASSIVE mental health pandemic we are no where near prepared for. I hope someone reads this post and reconsiders requesting trigger warnings. If you are someone who is reacting so strongly to media regarding particular topics, please seek therapy. The trigger warning hasn’t helped your anxiety, and it may have worsened it. It’s a sign your body is using to tell you that you could use some help. I am in no way suggesting you flood yourself with media that causes you anxiety, but total avoidance is not a method that will help. It has been my lifelong goal to reduce suffering in my fellow man, and I only want what is best for you. And you ARE strong enough to endure these small exposures. Mental health treatment is likely available on a sliding scale through your local community agency through the department of health. www.psychologicalscience.org/news/releases/trigger-warnings-fail-to-help.html www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/what-if-trigger-warnings-dont-work journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2167702620921341

There needs to be some sort of balance, otherwise you just stop being functional. It does take time , you are allowed to give yourself leniency, but you should keep trying to lessen the anxiety. Absolutely! I'm not a psychologist by any means, but I am involved with film. As you said, we have the rating system. It isn't perfect by any means, but it is basically the trigger warning everyone is asking for. It rates a film or show based upon content that can be objectively triggering due to it's negative nature (like violence and such, not things like a character having cancer or Pixar and all of their sad moments). Ironically, the rating system was made so that content could be seen and not policed and shut down by the government (films had to be screened to make sure it met approval, and if it didn't, they would have to cut the "problematic" parts of the film out or not have it be released. That's a very simple explanation, but ratings were Hollywood's solution to sort of regulate itself). The ratings system implies people wanted to see this content. Ratings exist to tell you who is probably mature enough to handle the content. Even if it ends up bothering them, they should be mentally developed enough to stop watching and/or process their feelings about the content. Even more ironically, it seems like people just aren't using the ratings system. I was looking at Sweeny Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet St., and in the reviews online, I think it came pretty close to every 4th review being a parent complaining they turned it on for their kids and the movie is not appropriate for kids. I can absolutely tell you it's not, and it never claimed to be. The rating says so. The description of the movie says so. The promotional image says so. Everything pointed towards this movie being a bloody horror movie, and yet because the parents saw it was also a musical, they assumed it was safe for their kids. It is not Elmo: the Demon Barber of Sesame St. And yet so many parents got mad and gave it a 1 star review because they were mad because their kids saw red liquid (implied to be blood) on gears and such in the opening. Then they realized it was never intended for a younger audience that had not deleloped the skills to process the content of the film. Trigger warnings definitely don't work if you won't even listen to them. Aside from everything you pointed out (very interesting, by the way), that alone is enough for me to say adding more trigger warnings won't do a thing to help. At this point, just watch the movie and tell me how you feel about it afterwards.

I have a respiratory desease and I've known since I am 10y old that it will require a lung transplant in a few years. So I used to have panic attacks whenever lung transplant or related content was brought up (at school or in a tv documentary, since my parents were researching that matter). I've been exposing myself to it for a few years, one step at a time, already so that I don't break down hyperventilating in tears anymore. I'm still really uncomfortable watching the procedure though (Others transplant, I watch while eating cereals ^^).

I’m an amateur in the realm of psychology, but I consider learning about it to be valuable, and I absolutely agree about exposing oneself to things that give them anxiety. I am flash sensitive but not epileptic, although I know that people who are epileptic could be sent into a medical emergency just by seeing the flashing lights so it is necessary to have that kind of trigger warning. I find it very funny how these people automatically assume a mask is for their safety only. It's for yours and other people as well. If you cough into the mask, it's not going to freely fly around the room and be inhaled by other people, and those other people will also be covered, so it's double protection. If they hear there are people who are born in the wrong body they might think they were born in the wrong body, when that's simply not a thing.

All it takes to not be in shape is way, not move and that’s easy with no real work put in. Some folks can lie to themselves all day but being out of shape to thin or big most of the time will have adverse on your body(joints, organs, etc) So just because some of these folks say healthy at every size that isn’t reality. 🤷🏽♂️🫡🥴🙃✌🏾✊🏾

It’s choosing your hard. It’s hard to be heavier than normal and out of shape. It’s hard to be in shape and requires discipline and dedication. I would take that hard. I understand though. I’ve had multiple times where health and other life events lead to me having to start the journey to athleticism and health all over again. It’s worth it though. I still have about 20lbs from the lockdowns and some severe health issues but I’m prioritizing my health and looking at it more from an aesthetics perspective.

Acknowledging reality and finding the dark humor in it is way more helpful and cathartic than pretending that it doesn't exist. This feels like one of those things where people just want to pretend nothing bad ever happens to anybody under the guise of protecting the feelings of cancer patients. You covered the topic of trigger warnings incredibly well in this video. I have PTSD and actually suffer from psychogenic seizures due to my PTSD. This means I can and do have physical reactions when triggered by certain subjects. Unfortunately it is out of my control but I can’t expect the world to have a trigger warning for every single thing that triggers me, especially when some of my triggers are quite obscure. I’ve had to learn over time what is safe for me to watch, to read, or just expose myself to in general. I also love that you used such a great example re: trans representation.

I watched Disney's Brave in theatres and I went in without any knowledge of the premise. The main theme revolved around a complicated relationship between mother and daughter, and my mom had recently died. We had a complicated relationship too and some of the scenes hit a sore spot, it was unexpected, and I burst into tears in the theatre. Not once did I feel angry at the movie, these things exist in the world and they won't disappear because I have a lot of baggage around them. Thing about the word Trigger is that it's supposed to be used for people who can get physically alarmed by an action or word, like hyperventilating, flashbacks, vomiting, etc. It bothers me that people use it when they are slightly uncomfortable about whatever, it lost its meaning and I believe it should be used carefully instead of people just adding onto the list just because they felt a negative emotion about it for like 2 seconds. I’m so glad my mother taught me at a young age that no one can “make you feel” anything. How you feel and act in response to something is all from yourself, either because it’s true and you feel ashamed of yourself, or because it’s not true, in which case it shouldn’t bother you anyway. I didn’t grow up thinking my every feeling & reaction to things were everyone else’s fault or responsibility. No one can make you feel bad for being fat. You either feel bad because it’s true and you’re unhappy about it, or you’re happy about it so comments shouldn’t bother you. There should be no trigger warnings besides seizure risks.

There's actually not a difference between being "plus size" and being fat/obese. "Plus size" is the fashion industry's term for the clothing size range for fat/obese women. Plus size clothing usually starts at a size 10W, which is cut more like a size 12 in non-plus ("straight") sizes. If you wear plus size clothing, you are fat/obese.
@neverlandariya2 жыл бұрын
@@fitfatty211 I agree with you, but a lot of muscular people could be considered plus size based on sizes. And also, a lot of people are curvy (and i mean this in the actual meaning, not the size 2902179086 curvy) and can be considered "regular" in tops but when they go to buy pants, they're plus sized. I haven't weighed myself in a while but I'd estimate myself as a solid 150-ish lbs, and I'm a size 6 or 8 in tops but when it comes to pants, I'm a size 12 just because I have wide hips. Plus size doesn't neccesarily mean fat/obese. For your average woman, sure. But if you're muscular and have large bones, you could be considered plus size. But take this with a grain of salt, this is only from my opinion and I should do a bit of research, as I do work out but I'd consider myself more toned than muscular.
@neverlandariya2 жыл бұрын
@K Marie I agree, but a 10/12 isn't always what you think it is. Sizing in fashion is just bad. For example, I bought a size S (4-6) tank top from one brand, and it was too big for me. I bought one in a size M (6-8) from another brand, and it was too small. We shouldn't force the notion that those sizes are obese, because 1. you could have a taller muscular person who is a size 10 and they are in no way obese, and 2, it can cause distorted self image for people. I know this since a few years ago I was a size 14, and I got bullied so much for being said size I developed a case of disordered eating and lost weight unhealthily until I was a size 6-8.

I have been SA'd before so movies with scenes revolving around SA can be pretty triggering for me depending on how my mental health is doing that day. It is a personal issue that I deal with and if there is a new piece of content I want to see that I think MAY have a scene that will upset me in it I wait until other people have seen it so that I can avoid it if necessary. I don't expect every piece of content to have warnings for every potentially upsetting topic because what triggers me may not necessarily trigger someone else. Even other people with similar experiences may not react in the same way. One example of this is with Game of Thrones. I waited until I could look up timestamps online and skip the SA scenes that I knew I couldn't handle. It sucks to have to wait but it is my responsibility to take care of my own mental health.

And in scenarios in which I suddenly get triggered I walk out asap. Just leave and avoid it. It is always nice of people to be considerate but I know in the end this is an issue that I need to take care of and be cautious of myself. Nobody can be looking out for me 24/7. I think most countries have restrictions on the speed of strobe lights shown in media anyways so often isn't needed but is appreciated. They actually have to be really fast, almost imperceptible, to cause seizures in most Epileptics. And most Epileptics aren't photosensitive only like 5% them have that trigger & only 2% of the general population is epileptic. It is very paradoxical that we live in very violent societies for the most part where ruthless things happen in the world every day and are massively mediatised and yet, trigger warnings are now attached to everything. In law school we had a trigger warning that our course on personal injury contained legal cases with descriptions of injury in it. The thing that makes me curious is how these warnings came about, as they seem to have suddenly gone into fashion but none of the people I was studying with cared about them. It feels like something other people thought young people would seek, and now people not directly affected by any issue start blindly taking the stance that there should be trigger warnings everywhere. It is nice to hear a critical and educated opinion on these, as I am shocked at how blindly and widely used they now are.
@briar16242 жыл бұрын
There *is* a trigger warning in place at the beginning of every theatrically released film, though. The MPA has a film rating system based on what general age range is appropriate for watching the film, and watch is included in the film that may make it inappropriate for some audiences. However, "Does the dog die?" is a very good online resource for more specific instances that may upset people, including more than just animal death. Great place to go for people who want a heads up!

it IS so weird to expect a warning for trans ppl in a show/movie. it makes us seem like a horror show or something to be scared of. we are regular ppl. so gross.
@w1975b2 жыл бұрын
That would be MANY shows/movies now, because it is an agenda. Why are teachers fighting to talk to 5 year olds about being trans??? Think about that, if you were going to say "not an agenda".

I love that robe Also with the Marvel film - It was a major plot point years ago. I read comics and can miss things or not look them up before watching something, but a quick Google search would have the cancer info. And there would be articles out there all about it. Trigger warnings for me, are for discussions around SA, murder, child abuse, or possible epilepsy triggers. Shit that be heavy, triggering, or otherwise have aa real potential negative consequence for people consuming it.
@makilawhite11442 жыл бұрын
I highly reccomend the website "does the dog die", as it lists a bunch of topics/potential triggers for all kinds of media. SA can trigger me so I always have to spoil myself first haha. Luckily I don't mind spoilers! I guess the Thor trailers could have mentioned Jane's cancer? Especially as they bring it up in the first fifteen minutes. That's about all I can think of minus explicitly stating it during the opening credits.

Have people become so incapable of watching a movie or documentary without having a minor meltdown or something?! Necessary warnings: Sexual context, Graphic violence, Flashing lights that could effect epileptics Anything else would be for extreme wienies They can hide under their security blankets

You’re right about people being “triggered” by different things that others might not find “triggering”. About two weeks ago, an associate of mine was going on and on about how traumatized he was by a car accident he was in several years ago in which his arm was cut on some broken glass. (He likes to be the center of attention, and has a tendency to make stuff up; so it may not have even happened.) It was a few days before the third anniversary of my girlfriend’s passing in a car accident. I had to leave the room for a couple minutes after he finished. Especially this time of year, talk about auto accidents can make me feel uncomfortable. It’d be ridiculous to insist that everyone in the building preface all mentions of auto accidents with a “trigger warning” during the month of May for my sake, or to complain to management after the fact that he didn’t warn me that his story might be “triggering”. Adults need to be adults. If you hear something difficult for you, step away for a moment if you can’t shrug it off.

You have a really good voice, I don't see that many comments about it but you can definitely stay in key and hold a note well. I find your channel really funny because you make fun of yourself but also know your worth. People take things far too seriously these day, even if something isn't meant to be offensive they'll find a way and try to justify it by saying there is a subconscious bias. Which is even more hilarious they attempt to sound smart by using psychology buzzwords. Remy makes me laugh, you know that she completely did herself up for that video after having a few hours blubbering and crying haha. These woke people are such emotional people that base every thing they do on that and not logic ever. The kid saying "When you're not a fat bitch you can ride at the ranch" made me laugh for 5 minutes, it made me have hope there are still normal people in his generation not all woke zombies.

We are all responsible for our own triggers and working through them to process and heal whenever possible. It does not help to put that responsibility on strangers. No stranger is ever going to take your triggers for you. It doesn’t work that way-and trying to make it just makes life even more impractical to even try to live both for the traumatized and for people just trying to enjoy life.

I have a normal weight, maybe on the skinny side, but I was fat in my teen. Now that I am tinner people can't stop complaining about my body, my prominent collar bone (that I had even when I was fat), how much I eat, what I eat. Ultimately I had an interaction with a fat positive woman who was "offended" about my existence, I think. Last year I dropped a bit of fat due to health problems, and my clothes doesn't fit right anymore, but I am not really ready to accept my new body, it is complicated. So I usually use a belt or wear oversize, and this girl spoke with a mutual friend about how I flaunt my skinniness, and when we where in the same room she always would made jokes about only dogs likes bones. It was so infuriating that at some point I confronted her with sarcasms. For me my weight, my body, food are problems right now. I have a strange relationship regarding food/weight/health and the last thing I want is to be bashed about it.

My mother died of cancer years ago, it was a horrible time and the grief was so terrifiedly deep. Still cancer in movies or other media doesn’t trigger me. If it would it meant that I had not let myself mourn, deal with the loss and move on. The world does not roll around the people who get ”triggered” or others should not tip-toe because that-and-that thing is sooo hard to deal. Cancer is common these days, sadly.

First things first… now I want a green screen room. 😂 I’m getting so tired of the trigger warning idea. Not only does everyone have different triggers, but it can take away from what you’re supposed to naturally feel when watching the movie or show. If you get triggered, then that’s kind of on you. I get triggered when people chew and I can hear it. I also have a phobia of holes and multiple dots. When I’m watching movies and gross holey beings pop up on the screen, my skin crawls and I look away because it freaks me out. But that’s not anyone else’s fault but mine.
