It's like someone had a really nice pregnancy gown and was like "Put it away until I need it again? Hell no! I'll throw a belt on it, and now it's fashion!"
@dees3179Ай бұрын
You just described pre contraception history…..
@_asphobelle6887Ай бұрын
@@dees3179 yes exactly ! Women were pretty much constantly pregnant except when they just gave birth, and clothes were crazy expensive, so all dresses were pregnancy-ready.
@SandraL489Ай бұрын
As a childless woman with an interest in historical fashion and size adjustable clothing this was felt obvious once she mentioned returning to the more fitted side seams. Next pregnancy you would just take out the fold as needed and still have a fitted look. Folds on the back, though... To complete the look, make it intentional by adding to the symmetry? Or would it serve a function I'm not aware of?
@poisonedflowersАй бұрын
@SandraL489 I'm guessing probably several reasons mashed together. Symmetry is likely, weight balance on the fabric so it doesn't hang on the body oddly, some people have a very large deviation in waist-to-hip measurement so it would make fitting multiple people easier w/o having to draft as many patterns

The spinner/weaver in me is screaming, “Take clues from the yardage!!!” So much labour (ergo cost) goes into making the fabric, cutting pieces for a gown would have been done to use straight lines as much as possible and keep the number of seams to a minimum. That’s why gussets were so popular and important. I’m not an historical dress expert, but having created yardage from the fleece to the cutting table, I’m a big fan of patterns like medieval shifts. That basic garment has been reinvented so many times and is so infinitely adaptable.

I found for the less structured gown, making tapered panels into a pseudo- circle segment for each panel of the gown and then cutting away armscyes (mine was sleeveless with some hanging bits in back) was the best way to get the shape like the manuscripts.

When you talked about the pleats my mind went immediately back to an episode of "A Stitch In Time" about the green gown from Jan van Eyck's Arnolfini Wedding. IIRC correctly they stitched the pleats down onto another piece of fabric on the inside of the dress. And in some of the pictures you showed, it looks very much sewn into place. Of course, not sewing down the pleats gives you a better range of motions and makes the dress suitable even if your weight fluctuates, but they do look nice and even if you they are sewn down😊
@gwynreiber246227 күн бұрын
if the pleats were just basted onto another piece of fabric to keep the shape they could easily be changed with weight fluctuations... very practical.

I'ma use that! I noticed your eyelets are staggered, which might pull the fabric to uneven wear. Looking at some historic examples, eyelets appear directly across from each other & laced like a corset. I think your staggard ones look great & give the dress a "working dress" look - your basic house to market garment. Ooh, maybe, sexy grog maiden! 😊 A lot depends on the look you're going for - upper class, working class, utilitarian dress, festival dress, etc.,. Great video tutorial! 💜
