Are you me? I now have an electric kettle a v60 my parents got me a metal filter Chemex-like product I bought a Moka pot to make espresso style drinks and now I’m like “I need a French press…”

Proud owner of a Gaggia Classic for one year. I buy my roasted beans from a local roaster. Baratza grinder. It doesn't get any better than this. Watched all of Morgan's videos during early covid weeks. I rarely go to a coffee shop now. Making my mocha latte every morning is a favorite ritual.

@@haileyhailey6042 That's one reason why you need a vacpot (coffee siphon). I just got a used hario next, and with a butane burner it is a great coffee ritual every morning.

I've been using a double-walled stainless steel French press for years. It holds temperature better than my glass press. I'll use the glass one for company if I'm serving it all immediately. In that case aesthetics is more important than temperature control.

You've sold me on the 40$ one. I recently smashed my old french press and need a new one, and the grounds-lifter looks incredibly convenient edit: I've had it for awhile now and it's great. Highly recommend.

I watched this with interest. My first dive into better coffee was with a Veken french press. It has four levels of filtration and comes with an extra fine filter. It is only $20, comes wrapped in a beautiful copper which scores for that "luxury feel and looks" and the filtration is pretty good. My buddy had one of my first cups and dreamed about it the next night. Take a peak at it. It comes with a beautiful stir spoon too. LOL

There is extra reason for that fellow wood stick. Inner walls are coated against kalk. If you would use metal spoon or try to clean it with metal sponge it would get scratched. I learned that on a hard way with one nice gooseneneck kettle

I've used a Secura stainless steel French press for 2 years now and I really like it. Easy to clean, dishwasher safe, coffee stays hot while brewing and it looks great. Thank you for this video, I always enjoy watching them and always learn something.

Excellently explained. While traveling, I’ve had to learn how to properly use a French press. I recently tried a double walled French press and able to appreciate how the coffee keeps hotter for longer than a single wall French press. Your presentation is very informative. Thank you.

Pro cleaning tip from someone who drinks a French press 5 days a week, put a little little water in the press, give it a stir and the grounds will pour out Used coffee grounds are also good to put on plants due to their nitrogen content

Usually the way I get coffee grounds out of my french press is by pouring some water in, swirling, and throwing it into the yard. It's good for plants, so that's an option for me. If you don't have a yard, there's always the option to get a cheap bin of some sort to put it in and use it and garden soil

That's why I adore my Bodum, get to see the difference in colour between different coffees I buy, and also see all the grounds moving around in the french press, so nice to look at lol!

you can even pass a light through to see how sludgy your coffee is, or if you should rather let it sit for a little longer. I guess with the better filter you aren't as much concerned about it.

You can get a much cleaner cup when you stir after 4 minutes and put the sieve/lid on but do NOT press and wait around 5 to 7 additional minutes. Most of the stuff will sink to the bottom in that time. If you pour gently, the cup is very clean - much cleaner than when pressing down. Doing it this way, though, makes the coffee a bit stronger so you have to adjust the amount of coffee if it's too much compared to 4 minutes and press.

One question: could the difference in particles be caused by the Oxo being a fair amount older and frequently used? Perhaps the seal in the Oxo has degraded a bit compared to the brand new one (Clara?).

I always use a french press then paper filter pour it into my storage jug for my cold brew coffee. I have found it to be the best and cheapest way to make coffee since you can use just about any price point french press.

Try the Hoffmann method for french press, that way you don't even need a paper filter anymore.

The exception is their EKG kettle which hits it out of the park for simplicity, user experience, and looks, but even that could be built significantly better in terms of materials/fit and finish. I think fellow products look premium but don’t feel premium or capture the luxury aspects once you pay attention to details.

Great video, love the looks of the Clara. One thing to note is that the temp of the coffee affects body. The Clara feels lighter because it's 15 degrees hotter. As a coffee cools down, oils start to solidify at a microlevel. This is why the Oxo has a thicker mouthfeel.

I have to disagree on this. No matter the temperature the press maintains inside itself you won't drink a cup of coffee that's still at 80°C, instead wait for it to cool down. The only thing the double layering does for the Clara is that maybe you get a better extraction because all of the time the water remained at optimal temperature and also that you don't need to pour the coffe into a thermos if you don't mean to drink it immediately. Personally I'm fine if heat is lost during the process as even with a glass french press, I have to wait for the coffee to cool down before I can drink it. What affects the body is in fact the better filtering, the Clara I noticed has double gaskets on the plunger and possibly the mesh is finer as well, better walls will also allow the plunger to slide down without hangups which can cause stuff to pass through. There are cheaper ways to reduce the amount of sludge, but snobs would probably have a heart attack at my suggestion of using a fine siv to remove all the stuff smaller than the press can deal with.

@@jellyen- I think with tolerances that tight, it won’t retain peak efficiency for all that long. After a hundred uses, it will just be another French Press, though admittedly very handsome.

It's inspiring to see someone so passionate about coffee. I'm one who enjoys muddy coffee (even Turkish coffee) yet I don't like larger grinds in my cup. I currently have a french press with poor sealing on the sides of the mesh filter. (Those last drops are brutal lol). I'm excited to upgrade to something nicer! Thanks for this wonderful review!

The most expensive French Press I bought was about $35. It is a stainless steel double-walled. I use it for camping. I do love the look of it, but definitely more then I would be willing to spend. I also prefer coffee a little lower then brew temp.

The high end standard to measure other high end presses against is the Espro P7 with a filter basket. The Clara with wood accents is beautiful. The filter comparison at the end was a good idea.

For cleaning french press I like to add some water to the grounds, agitate them and then use a sifter, then just throw them out.

Years ago, I bought a French press mug from a coffee shop called The Mill for $40. I, and everyone I was with, thought that was a ridiculous price. I use it every day and it has held up beautifully.

The cloudiness and texture from french press coffee (indeed due to grounds passing through) is not necessarily a result of leaks or whatever. It mostly has to do with unevenness of grind size. The smaller particles caused by grinding (even using a burr grinder) WILL pass through. I have tried both with the classic all metal filter french presses as well as french presses designed with a rubber rimmed filter (similar to Clara on the video) to avoid leaks and equipped with more fine filters. There is definitely a difference when using a finer mesh (like Clara) than, lets say, the all-metal filter of a Bodum Kenya. But I did not get any nuance of flavor, just a less heavy body. I have also tried combining two meshes together and it does make a difference but it will never be as "clean" as paper filtering. Maybe sieving the grinds before french pressing helps even more. Also in order to speak about sandiness, it will have to be something equivalent to turkish coffee where all the grounds remain in the cup, some of which are suspended to the top and will be sipped on partially. Therefore, saying in general that "we are not looking for this in coffee" referring to any residual grounds, is like dismissing turkish coffee altogether. So I wouldn't present this as a rule. It is up to taste.

For $50 Canadian you can get an extremely light weight titanium french press 750ml capacity for travel and camping. Want a change? Put orange peel (and maybe a cinnamon stick) in the camp pot, bring the water to a boil, pour this water into the french press to brew the coffee.

Certain things not mentioned : double walled prevents you from seeing inside incase of any issues/check levels of remaining coffee Also the Oxo is an older prrss and has obviously seen use which may affect the quality of the filter and the seal Also would have been interesting to see the silt in the cupe and filters weighed (if you have a scale precise enough)

Once you realize that coffee doesn't have to be a watery crunchy disaster, you get invested in it. Even a simple drip Mr. coffee and some local roasted beans in a burr grinder is sooo different from a burnt cup of Folgers. It was quite an experience when I first tried *good* coffee after several bad experiences, but I drink it every day now. (Mostly just dalgona coffee tho... W/ soymilk bc thats the best milk for drinking.)

Going double-walled is a very Fellow thing to do, but I'm not sure if I want that in my french press. I like being able to start out with ripping hot water, and then getting coffee that's cool enough to drink on the end of it.

I really like the fellow one. I bought it because I sometimes I needed something to make coffee for more than one person and you can use it as a thermos as well, so I also use it for storing iced coffee in the summer. It just is both: a coffee device and a thermos and since I have a small kitchen, i like things for more than one purpose.

The lack of a glass brewing vessel in the Clara is a major plus. I've broken those glass ones a few times. The all black version of the Clara is $30 less. $99 seems a lot more reasonable to me given I don't care that much about the wood accent parts. The size is perfect for me since I'd just pour it into a Tervis Tumbler which is also 24 oz (yes, that's my serving size). I don't like leaving coffee in a French Press since it just starts getting bitter as it sits on the grounds. It seems like the double walled design maintains the brewing temperature better which is probably a good thing.

I have a very old glass French Press and I also have a Victorian porcelain drip coffee pot. where the hot water just slowly drips through the metal piece holding the grounds. Any pot your going to have SOME residue or fine grounds. All I have ever done is use my old Vintage wooden handled small strainer about 2 1/2 inches wide and about a 4 inch wood handle. You see them all the time at flea markets and antique stores. They all have the 2 metal prongs that nest on a cup or jar whatever your filling with liquid. So when the mesh starts wearing out on your French press or your thinking of spending a $100.00 more on one with a better filter, just grab the strainer and pour your coffee through it, and the old vintage ones are so fine mesh you can strain butter with no cheese cloth. Plus the strainer is going to last for decades and usually sell for around 2.00. The modern ones are not worth the time to even look at, the metal is cheap, plastic handles and way to light weight. So instead of worrying about the cost of a press with a double or more high end filter think about investing in a 2.00 vintage strainer.

I bought the oxo french press after seeing it in one of your earlier videos. The cleanup makes it for me; the Fellow might make literal nectar of the gods but if I can't clean it easily after making it, that's a solid no from me. It's sure pretty though. Thanks for making the video!

For the sludge, if you're not one of those obsessing about ground freshness, you can get a very fine siv and filter the worst of what is able to get through the plunger. I use a siv also to catch the grounds when rinsing, sivs for everything! I use a 3-cup Bialetti, bought it after noticing I very much preferred the process of making coffee with the IKEA carafe than fiddling around with a cheap moka pot but it was too big and it didn't filter very well. I thought rubber gaskets made a worse seal on the edges of the plunger than the overhanging mesh my Bialetti has? yet I noticed both those presses use them though the higher end one does have two.

As someone else mentioned, thank you for making more french press content! You going over three ways to use them got me to actually try one and find that I love it. I've been falling out of love of my little starter one and wanted to look around. Maybe OXO has one for smaller amounts. It's...sad being in a house where only one person drinks coffee.

At a similar price point, you can get a stainless steel Espro with 2 stage filtration. It’s very good at removing super fines while keeping the oils you want for that signature french press body. I feel like the Fellow one does not improve on the final results (maybe it has a good seal, but im sure the OXO has a good seal too), but its built with the best materials. You get both with an Espro. And that’s coming from a guy who uses a Fellow goose neck kettle on the reg for almost 3 years!

I use a Bodum press which is similar to the Fellow (double walled stainless, very pretty, painfully expensive!) predominantly for the thermal regulation - preventing the water temperature from dropping off (as much) during the course of the brew improves the flavour (in my opinion). That might be the source of the brighter flavours more than the cleaner filtering. I'd have been really interested in the taste comparison after they'd both passed through the paper filter. A silicone spatula lives nearby to get the grounds into the bin, ready to be composted for the allotment. Plenty of people have mentioned how great they are for your plants but I haven't spotted anyone mentioning that they need to be composted down - neat grounds will 'burn' and likely kill younger plants.

When I tell you I've learned more about French press in this one video, than in my whole life...Like, I'm glad you left your barista job, bc idc if it was a Starbucks or a high end luxury joint, you couldn't have been paid nearly what you deserve, with your expertise. And now, we can get videos from a more focused standpoint! Since you don't have to divide your time, unless you find another gig, which, more power to you, if that is what you choose, but I love these vids and hope you pursue this for a long time! Edit: just realized you got a new barista job, 3 months ago, so congrats on that. But, yeah, I love your channel and the passion and information and dedication you put into it. And your personality is so charming!

I can't fathom a $100 French press! I used them for both hot coffee and to make cold brew concentrate. I love the idea of reaching the refrigerator pulling a little bit of coffee over ice and adding my sweetened creamer which I make homemade or I purchase Dunkin' donuts extra extra and I recently had a great value speculo's creamer that was absolutely delicious! I didn't think it possible from great value.

I’ve been using the frieling dual walled stainless steel French press for years. I’ve had really good luck with it! The down side was the price…$100+. It is dishwasher safe though.

I've heard that coffee grounds are bad for your kitchen pipes, so I dump the grounds out in the backyard. I've also heard used coffee grounds are good for your plants. I fill the French press up with water, and take a glass of water with me to pour outside.

Not sure if anyone commented, but I would think the Clara would benefit from being tempered first due to the metal mass acting as a heatsink before the coffee and brewing water was added.

The thing about french presses is the glass in them. It is not if you will ever break the glass, but when, you do. The last press that I bought is now about 15 years old all metal. I probably will end up buying the Clara because I like nice things. I just wish it had the scoop as one of it's features.

Another thing that would be interesting is to find out what the mesh of the two screens are. Even though the difference in mesh size may not be visible to the naked eye, the fewer fines in the cup from the Clara suggests a significant difference between the two.

Just the video I needed. I drink cold brew only. I may warm it up sometimes after I brew it, but I always be cold. Way just looking for reviews on the OXO. Would love that lift out feature for the grounds! I'm sold!

Yes! Coffee is the best!!! In all honesty, its better to invest in a good pour over then an expensive French press. But I would accept the Clara as a gift, its beautiful!!

What if you used a different French press technique like the one James Hoffman has on his channel where you don't plunge and get cleaner coffee?

I mean I personally wouldn't bother with the Fellow press because of this. I use the Hoffmann method usually because I love how simple it is and how it relies on gravity and doesn't really need a high quality filter, etc to produce a consistently clean cup. I've noticed when pouring with the Hoffman method as well that all the sludgy silt that gets kicked up into suspension when pressing normally instead gets trapped amongst the larger coffee ground particles on a slow pour, a little like a multi-layered filtration system for water. The Clara meanwhile seems to be good at what it's built for - pressing and filtering regardless. It's what you pay for, alongside design. Maybe it'd be good at retaining heat, but double walled presses a fraction of the cost also exist (IKEA even has one). Hoffmann method might not benefit all that much from what the Clara seems to offer.
