It's very interesting to see Type-1 hypervisor having to be able to display the VM screens on very same "server" machine. Some kind of "thin interface" to select which VM to boot and display. I've managed to run Mac OS on a VM like what was also mentioned in this video, through arch KVM but the "boot experience" is not great. It feels awkward to have a Linux running before you run the Mac VM, although I think there's a way to just script it out to auto-boot, maybe that's what LTT did afterwards. However a better experience would be to have a selection of OS/OS'es you want to boot; although I have no idea on how to fork the display into three monitors. And yes, I totally agree with this video, the future is Virtualization; even Android relies on virtualization.

It worked as advertised but as you stated several times, there was a fear time and time again about upgrading the OSX from one version to the next. Nice video, I have a question though: Does this method make it possible to do a hackintosh with any GPU? That's my problem with doing hackintosh in 2023, thanks to Apple Silicon, now GPU support is extremely limited, and you need a specific GPU (Most of them are too old) to use macOS, I was thinking maybe these hypervisors can "emulate" different GPU architectures. Thanks!

Ok, so the big question is: since "direct IO" means that GPU's are not shared across VM's: does this system actually have 3 discrete GPU's to allow the three OSes to have hardware accelerated video? If so: that sounds like quite a waste... Don't get me wrong, the copy pasting across VM's is nice, but running 3 GPU's if I could be running only one (for example when I'd like to use three screens for the macOS setup) seems like kind of a hassle.
@MorgonautHackintosh3 жыл бұрын
why don't you watch carefully this video? :(
@beardedlion3 жыл бұрын
@@MorgonautHackintosh I did (and I've watched it again) but you didn't reply to my actual remark. In this specific case (let's say we want to use macOS on three screens because we have a task where that's convenient) we are still running the other two GPU's and they are left doing nothing. Obviously there are cases where there is a benefit to having direct IO to a GPU for every OS but for most home users the power you're wasting this way doesn't give you any benefit most of the time. The average user that uses multiple OSes on their machine will rarely render/edit video on macOS WHILE gaming on Windows WHILE mining crypto on Linux. So with 'the new way' we gain the convenience of cross-OS copy paste (which to be fair, works just as well on a level 1 hypervisor) and we have direct IO (which makes sense if every workload on every OS that you are running requires direct IO to a GPU). But we lose the flexibility of assigning multiple monitors to a given OS unless we either wire every OS to every monitor (which would negate the 'moving between monitors' benefits of the new way and requires 9 monitor cables instead of just 3). And the power usage increases since most users would have two idle GPU's most of the time with your proposed setup. I do use macOS, Linux and Windows on a daily basis but for me implementing the setup you described (while having undeniable benefits) would still be quite a hassle if I don't want to give up the "flexibility" that I'd get by just virtualising (in case of Linux) or multi-booting (macOS/Windows). On top of it I'd have 3 GPU's running for no good reason. I'd rather reboot the entire machine than fiddle with three individual monitors and/or display cables to use multiple screens on a single OS. If there are ways to dynamically allocate GPU's and/or set them in power savings mode I'd love to hear about it obviously.
@imnxnyer3 жыл бұрын
Pavo's OC-Gen-X has saved me a ton of time but I still approach most every OC/OSX change with trepidation. Plus migrating to a Ryzentosh introduced some application issues due to Intel specific code. For those reasons I was already planning to deploy OSX on my Proxmox server but resigned to accessing it with a virtual console. The setup you demonstrate with vm displays on a physical console is a feature I've always desired, in fact just one is enough for me. Can't wait to see how you do it!

I have subscribed to you long ago but until now never bothered to try making a hackintosh because of the "FEAR" of messing up my system. I'm so glad I stayed subscribed and am so excited to see your tutorial on the new way so that I can run both Mac OS and Windows on the same system at the same time. Thank you so much Teresa!

At 18:22 how are you able to move the mouse from Mac to Windows and have clipboard support? Are you using something like Synergy, or Multiplicity or Barrier? Or is this machine hopping built in to proxmox? AMAZING video! Very inspiring and very well done. You should be a motivational speaker! :D

Interesting video. I can still remember your old videos that talk about it. At the moment I don't run Mac virtualized but I am running Proxmox bare metal on my system and use Windows 10 as my daily OS completely virtualized and I am loving it. Better to make backups, easy way to migrate systems when I change hardware or entire computers and quickly create a snapshot before installing important updates to avoid a major crash. It is really the future

Yes, virtualisation does wonders but you can’t assign all the hardware resources to each of the machines for obvious reasons. The “old” way is done for the exact reason - using 100% of the hardware exclusively for the operating system so the user can get the same or even better performance out of the computer for much cheaper then what would need to be paid for top spec machine from Apple.

Awesome video Teresa! I've been wanting to build a Hackintosh for my audio recording work. The limited hardware options with OpenCore wasn't very promising. I'm really excited about this bare metal virtualization approach you've shown. Can't wait for the next video and to get started on my first build.

@VladVip | GameChannel - at first place DON'T SAY LIES ON MY CHANNEL! Your claims like "you will need one GPU for the host OS, and a one GPU for every system you would like to use simultaneously" are absolute lie! You don't need any gpu for host! In my video I clearly use 3 GPUs for 3 OSes! And other lies about the performance... Go spread your lies to hackintosh forums where it's full of it, not on my channel!

I have done windows gpu passtrough with kvm/qemu/libvirt for gaming before and now got interested in creating a hackintosh with opencore. I would say that both methods are somewhat difficult make and if you are more familiar with making it the old way I could see it being easier. Also even if the new way is basically same as bare metal it still not as performant and if you have weak hardware that small difference can matter.

I look forward to seeing a similar configuration using something like an Intel Core i9-11900 series processor - Threadripper performance and capacity are awesome, but the ~$2500 price tag just for the CPU...not so much. Also, the lower TDP and power consumption is a win for those that don't need 32 cores and 64 threads of flamethrower. :) Great video, as always. Thanks for all you do.
