This podcast has moved me to tears more than once today, and has given me several reasons to reflect. Thank you, you are doing the Lord’s work. God bless from Fort Wainwright, AK.

Wow. This has been an amazing podcast. I can testify of what Dr. Nelson is saying true. As a veteran who retired after 23.5 years of service, I am going through a divorce. My coping mechanisms for PTSD and over 30 documented traumatic brain injuries were not healthy or alogned with my values. I was not the only one who sacrificed. It takes a toll on everyone in the family. After sharpening your skills to do violence on those that threaten our nation, after experiencing violence, and imposing violence on others, your soul is scarred. The challenges are real. This is why President Russell M. Nelson has urged us to be peacemakers and to repent daily.

Great lesson and focus on violence in our lives. My father too, left part of him on the battlefields of Italy in WWII- he suffered from PTSD all of his life. Thank you for reminding us of the sacrifices of so many and how we are to live our lives in the face of evil and violence. I have always felt 'sorry' for Mormon to have witnessed the end of his civilization and now I am even more indebted to him for his sacrifice and so very grateful for his example.Thank you for making him, his experiences, and teachings come to life!

One of the most impactful of all of the Follow Him podcasts that I've listened to! My heart and spirit have been changed by this discussion! What you've brought out about the impact of violence both in the BOM and in our world today has given me so much food for thought. The "Yes, but they" attitude has given me such a cause for self reflection and desire to be proactive in being more of a peacemaker, a stone catcher, a builder! Thank you! Thank you! ❤❤❤

I appreciate the discussion on the effect violence has on me. It’s great to have studies to back up what I intuitively know. I think of ET in the movie when he saw the violence on TV and reacted with total shock. We have lost that sensitivity to it, little by little. Thank you for showing that keeping our covenants and replacing violence with healthy relationships will increase the love in our families. I loved the podcast!

Larry, your perspective at 49:15 on parenting brings it all home. The progression of teaching children what is right and wrong, then as the grow older, teaching them why it’s right or wrong, and then as they mature even more allowing them to practice choosing between right and wrong. All done in an atmosphere or climate of love and warmth where relationships can flourish. Thank you!!

As Dr. Nelson discussed being a stone catcher, I remembered a walk I took in my neighborhood recently. I saw a yard sign of the presidential candidate I do not support. I felt anger toward the home owner! Then I realized how ineffective that was (and detrimental only to me) and I chose to send love to that person instead. It was amazing how quickly it changed my heart and I felt the love of my Savior and how He love all.

His discussion of violence in society, violence in our lives, and violence in media provides important advice for each of us, especially parents. Dr. Nelson helps us see how Mormon's choice to let God prevail in his life allowed him to survive an incredibly violent and vile ending of his civilization.

Thank you for this marvelous episode! Some years ago, I started enjoying daily reruns of a crime solving drama on TV - after several months, they advertised that a certain vice would be the focus of the following week's episodes. It made me pause. I would never allow that vice in my home irl - why was I letting it in via at show? I repented. I never watched that show again & became much more careful about the entertainment I exposed my soul to. It has enabled greater spiritual protection (dreams that should be filled with scary things literally have the disturbing things blurred out). I am so grateful for the gospel and teachings of the prophets in the scriptures

I loved this episode particularly about burying our unique weapons of war. Another part that resonated strongly with me was in the dialogue 46.25 regarding taste. In our Māori language there is one word for all the senses and it is 'rongo'. In the past tense it is translated ...."kua rangona, ā, kua mōhio ki te painga o Ihu". I imagine that Mormon with all his being and all his senses felt, heard, saw, smelt and tasted, the goodness of God. Understanding how he tasted, helps me realise this was the experience needed for a 15 year old who became a general and writer and lone keeper of the records for us. I am so grateful to him for the godly lessons he teaches.

This brought to mind a time when I wanted to spend time with my husband and he wanted to see a current movie in the theaters, “Dead Pool” with Clint Eastwood. It was a good cop versus a bad guy who had to be caught with violent means. I made a comment as we were leaving that I realized this kind of thing does happen in real life, but we are a sick people who feel the need to watch it for entertainment. A sister in an institute class made a comment that violence desensitizes the suffering of our Savior and Redeemer.

Wow! What an episode! One of my favorites. I have often thought of the same things that Dr. Nelson has on violence. One thing to think about is that right now in the USA we have relative peace. We consume lots of violent shows and we may not want to go kill our neighbor but what happens when the whole world becomes violent in the last days. What happens when there are disasters or bad things happen. That is when we will be tested.

Literally yesterday before watching the podcast. My children were discussing the different tv shows that we 'banned'. We really only banned two tv shows regardless of their chagrin. Those two shows were Barney and I won't get into why but the other was Tom and Jerry. We saw a huge increase of violence in my young children when they viewed a Tom and Jerry show vs other non-violent shows like "Bear in the Big Blue House". I think the studies he brings up are fascinating. But for some reason I am remember Elder Stevenson's talk in April 2021 General Conference, "Hearts Knit Together". We respond differently with the different stimuli we receive. I think John Bytheway said it once, "You are what you marinate yourself with". Or something like that.

Love this! Thank you for the profound reflections on the impact of violence in our lives. I think it is also important to consider that the scriptures, including the Book of Mormon are filled with descriptions of violence, including God's wrath. However, they don't glorify or delight it. Bruce R. Mc Conkie describes the difference between Holy and Unholy passions in Mormon Doctrine. Love of God or righteousness vs Love of Satan and love of unrighteousness. Hating sin vs hating the sinner etc. I think the same thing applies to violence. I feel the intent of our heart in viewing violence and the way it is portrayed matters. The clear delineation of good and evil in Star Wars A New Hope is in stark contrast to the glorification of gore in the Friday the 13th series.

In The Book of Mormon there is the book called “Mormon”. Just like 1 Nephi, 2 Nephi, etc. So to eliminate confusion of what he is talking about, he would said “small b”, since he referring to the book of “Mormon” inside of the full (big B) Book of Mormon.
