I went to a high school with abstinence only Sex Ed, and it was HORRIBLE EDUCATION. My senior year, we were asked to write a five-page paper on a “controversial” subject and if you got an A you could do a presentation for extra credit. Almost everyone did something about marijuana. I wrote mind on how sex education in school effects teen pregnancy rates, and the main point was how abstinence only programs result in a higher risk of teen pregnancy (and other stuff about how fucking stupid these “educational” programs are). I got an A because my English teacher wasn’t a moron, but the guidance counselor told me I couldn’t present it because It was inappropriate and went against our school’s values, as in religious values. Why sex education can't actually be EDUCATIONAL I don't understand it and it pisses me off to this day.

There's a Mormon girl stereotype type where they are known for doing things they are not supposed to do (blow jobs for example) on days like Saturday, then on Sunday they go back to being perfectly normal. (This isn't true for most Mormon girls of course) The joke just makes fun of the fact that a Mormon girl (who is an example of this stereotype) wouldn't do anything against their religion (beer at a party) but they come up with a excuse to make sex ok for themselves before going back to being perfect or whatever. I hope that's enough for you ;)

About the military pilot analogy: It doesn't just work that way. Alright, you set yourself a limit. (abstinence, which is perfectly ok if you want!) But what happens if you accidentally fall lower than that 500 feet? You probably wouldn't know how to do anything, even after flying for 5, 10, or even 15 years. That's the point of sex ed - to teach them how to have safe sex, should it happen anytime. Promoting abstinence until marriage isn't a bad thing, but if they don't know how to use a damn condom at the age of 19/20, it's probably the school's fault.

My opinion of how to handle sex education. Encourage kids to wait. Not necissarily for marriage but for someone they care about. We all get exactly one first time and we should try not to throw it away casually. After saying that give them a clear understanding of the forms of birth control, their use and effictiveness. These religious sorts generally don't care about contraception because they believe that unmarried couples shouldn't have need for it and married couples should be ready for children. Even if they have no steady income or secure accommodation - don't worry about it, God will make it all turn out well in the end. And women shouldn't be worrying about their career anyway, that goes against God's design for them.

+Vyl Bird Religion's obsession with abstinence is just one more mechanism of manipulation, one more string they can yank to make you dance to their tune. That's all religion is - manipulation and exploitation.
@xaenon7 жыл бұрын
+UnbaptizedHeathen The concept of marriage has been around for millennia. It predates all current religions and can be traced back to tribal cultures. Religion claims dominion over marriage; each faith claiming that it is the source of the institution of marriage, and attempting to codify it. Almost universally, each religion identifies the 'ideal' situation as this: both man and woman of the same faith, married according to that faith's laws, sex only within the bounds of that marriage, producing as many children as possible and raising them according to that doctrines of that faith. And divorce is not an option, at least not according to religious doctrine. Take away even ONE of those factors, and the indoctrination of the child is at risk. Mixed-faith marriages, children raised outside of wedlock, , etc. tend to produce children who question that religion's doctrine. And no religion anywhere has conclusive answers that prove their ideology is absolutely true to someone who was exposed to other doctrines. Marriages that are electively childless are an abomination according to the doctrines of most religions. Same reason. No child to gain influence over. One less obedient follower in the next generation. In fact, if I remember correctly, a marriage that is childless due to a medical issue is still grounds for an annulment, at least according to my upbringing as a Catholic. Yeah, 'annulment' - the Catholic method of ending a marriage without divorce, by declaring the marriage 'invalid' from the beginning. While there is some merit to your argument that religion isn't 'obsessed' with abstinence, they DO rather insist that sex take place only their jurisdiction, because they have a vested interest in the outcome.
@cruj22557 жыл бұрын
UnbaptizedHeathen the ancient Greeks where pretty open about sex. being bi was the norm, and their religion didn't shone sex, since one of the main characteristics of their most important god was literally the fact he couldn't keep it in his pants. And celts could divorce, there were even rules about the splitting of the money and who got to keep what. Making sex unholy isn't that universal (but it's present in quite a lot of cultures)
@vylbird80147 жыл бұрын
It is worth noting that, while all religions do try to codify marriage, they to not all hold to the one-man-one-woman model. In the ancient world polygamy was common, for quite practical reasons (the importance of rulers producing an heir, and an excess of women due to men tending to die younger). It still is allowed by some schools of Islam today, as well as a very small number of Christian and Jewish sects. It's also rather interesting that, among those religions which used to allow polygamy and now prohibit it, they don't actually acknowledge the change - instead believers will universally explain that real marriage was monogamous from the very beginning, it's just that people were practicing the religion incorrectly for the first few centuries.
@xaenon7 жыл бұрын
+Mackenzie B Well, I imagine that there are significant limitations with regard to how long, and how MUCH, assistance you could expect, and I also imagine those limits are flexible dependent on a number of factors. I mean, if we remove the religious component for a moment, this is the very idea behind a commune. I'd also bet my bottom dollar that there is considerable favoritism involved, too, although I'm sure it would be worded in such a way as to appear otherwise. I'd also guess that there is considerable pressure (passive-aggressive, of course) involved once you're the recipient of such aid. After all, religion is renowned for the guilt trips, n'est pas?

As a teen currently being raised in the faith i find It's all really weirdin all honesty. you're not allowed to date until you're 16 (I'm 17 now and still no date tbh) and even then you can only go on group dates and you can't go on multiple dates with the same person in a row until you decide he's the one for you. I've even known girls who aren't allowed to go out with someone twice in a row so they have to find another to use as filler between dates. Plus there's just so many rules drilled into our heads and so much detail in the religion.

This is the big area that me and my LDS friends disagree on so damn much, this pisses me off to the nth degree. It's not just telling teens and YA's not the be sexually active with each other, it's also big on no porn, no masturbation, etc. etc. which... no! I've seen evidence, both scientific and anecdotal, that men (especially teens and YA's) who go for even a few days without popping one off can suffer from higher levels of aggression, poor focus, poor problem solving and decision making skills, they're more likely to take risks - basically they're walking around drunk 24/7. Want to know some of the consequences of safe sex outside of marriage? Fuck diddly. Wanna know some of the consequences of sexual abstinence? Pretty much everything up to and including suicide. As a mother, this worries the crap out of me. And then it comes to their hit and miss sex ed in general. Some LDS to actually teach safe sex pretty openly, they're not ALWAYS abstinence only, and many churches do encourage their members to be more open with their kids about sex. That's great, that's a step in the right direction... and yet, I have a pair of LDS friends who got married 2 years ago who will forever remember their wedding night as "the night she found out what the hymen was" "the night he learned why foreplay is important" and "the night they both learned badly done sex can be really really painful, and they spend 4 hours in ER because she started bleeding and thought she was gonna die." It's also "the night her sacred place reserved only for her husband" was examined by two complete strangers she'd never met to make sure she wasn't actually hurt. They remember that night the way most people would remember a rape, and have both come away from it with pretty serious emotional issues. What was that the church was saying about consequences of sex outside of marriage, again?

Doesn’t porn do something bad to your brain tho? Masturbation doesn’t tho
@bearhugzfam6497 ай бұрын
@@mysteryheart53 yes and no. There are bad things that *can* happen to your brain on specific types of porn same as there are bad things that *can* happen with masturbating, both coming down to how addictive we find sex and orgasms and how dopamine chasing works. There’s some nuance to what the bad stuff is it but ultimately education is the answer not aggressive denial or premarital sexuality

Abbigal Smith I wouldn't suggest getting involved with someone who has strong religious ties since that would be ground into you, and your children, if you both were to extend the relationship. From what I've seen, and heard women aren't valued as equal people to men in that religion. The moment you get married that could come out of him. He might just be love bombing everyone around him, and then the real guy comes out behind closed doors. But, it's ultimately your decision to hook up with him, or not. Be careful, and take care hun.

Ugh I used to be Mormon ( my dad always made us go) the sole reason I want to go at ALL was because I had friends I really liked talking to. There was a bunch of things you could and could not do for example you can’t even date anyone before you’re 16 for something like to being too emotionally attached (probably something else related to marriage)before ‘courting age’ to someone. I mean that wasn’t a problem for me but I thought it was stupid. No alcohol or drugs, no sex before marriage, no dishonesty(like I was going to keep this rule whenever we didn’t go),donate 10% of income ( I’ll keep my cash thank you. I earned it), don’t view pornography( I can somewhat agree), no same sex relationships (while they do tolerate it apparently you can’t marry), you have to keep ‘sabbath day holy’( you HAVE to go to church, you cannot work on Sundays), no cussing or ‘taking the lords name in vain’, no abortion, and no cigarettes, tea, and coffee( yeah right like people are going to do that). Rules for missionaries are even worse I’m not going to list it because it would be even longer so I’m leaving a link instead. www.lds4u.com/Missionaries/rules.htm

B/c, u know, NOT talking about something makes it either not happen or go away... 😔

Are Seventh Day Adventists cultist in anyway? I've always been an SDA member until recently but I don't think I ever felt I was in a cult.
@daniboy91987 жыл бұрын
Hmm, good question. I've heard some people say no, SDA is not a cult, but I've also heard other people say that yes, it is. There are checklists that people have used to determine if SDA is a cult or not. SDA does tend to be quite different from other, more mainstream branches of Christianity, so that probably doesn't help matters... If you are interested in looking into this, I'd recommend doing some research. I've read a lot of books, articles, etc. on this topic over the years, and I can understand why the SDA church is viewed as a cult by some. When I was SDA, it used to bother me whenever anyone "attacked" my faith in any way, but as a former SDA member, that sort of thing doesn't bother me anymore. :)

Civil marriage does count in the mormon church as a marriage that allows you to have sex with that partner. And practising polygamy will get you excommunicated from said church. Civil marriage and sealing may be done in the temple at the same time and same place in the US as far as i know. In the EU that is not allowed, so church members must have a civil marriage with another church member of the opposite sex first before being allowed to be sealed to one another.

I don't see what's so weird about temple garments when many religions have clothing that they wear all the time for religious reasons. Like a Jewish man's skullcap, a Muslim woman's headscarf, etc. It just means the same thing. Some bit of clothing worn as a sign of religious devotion. I'm just a spiritual-leaning atheist. But if Mormons are crazy and stupid for their temple garments, than everyone is equally stupid for thinking that a cosmic God entity cares about something as petty as clothing. And Mormons are contradicting Jesus' message about 'consider the lilies' (www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+12%3A27-40&version=ESV). The reason non-priests don't wear special clothing in Christianity is part of Christian philosophy, because Jesus told people not to be concerned with petty, material things. Including clothing.

Although I still disagree with the classification of Mormonism being a cult, I do agree with your criticisms of the church, I used to be mormon and as a teenager I completely ignored all teachings of the church and decided to be active in intimate relationships. Many of my Mormon friends were so sexually repressed, that at one point (usually after their mission or once out of their parents supervision) now with little sex education get STD's or a pregnancy, it's dangerous and is VERY common among MANY Mormon teenagers, these pregnancies are usually covered up by these young women due to their overwhelming shame that any woman would have Mormon or not.

But, yes, I do believe everything that the video brought up. however with the last bit of the video, quite a bit is incorrect. we believe in living prophets, yes, but our prophets don't contradict one another. We believe in following the laws instated and due to previous laws, we no longer practice polygamy. I don't believe everything in my church, after all I'm studying to be a bio engineer, but my viewpoint on religion is hey if it's true great, if it doesn't end up being true meh why should I care.

Umm everyone's talking about sex Ed but what does that have to do with their religious beliefs? And what's wrong with the name heavenly father? They call him that because they recognise him as the father of our spirits and because they belive that we all share a spiritual father that makes us all brothers and sisters. It's much better than imagining him as a cruel deity like other Christian faiths would have you believe. You will never see a Mormon band screaming god hates gays. Another thing that you have to remember is that this video is aimed at teens. They are too young for sexual intercourse and serious relationships anyway. Like have you seen the drama that comes from relationships? Grown men commit suicide because their girlfriends broke up with them. I'm not hating on anybody I'm just saying this world is already filled with so much hate because there are so many one sided people. Before you judge try to understand and if you can't understand don't judge

Mormons don't teach sex education. That's the problem. They preach abstinence, and that's it. The only sort of information they give, is that the male sacred part, and female scared part 'conjoins' and creates a baby from within the female- and that's when they're seventeen... My mom's a doctor. One time, a young Mormon couple came in to see her, saying that they were having trouble making a baby. After running some tests, my mom found that they were both perfectly fertile and shouldn't be having any trouble. She asked some questions, and later found out that the guy was putting it in the girl, but wasn't moving, and neither had reached climax before. They legit did not think that they had to do that for her to get pregnant... As for the 'father' thing, well, I'll admit, it's just a little creepy...

Well, I mean, how well could abstinence education reasonably be expected to work in this country? You got your elderly, "lame" biology teacher pushing abstinence but you turn on the TV and these hip teens are boning each other left and right. Because humans are humans, most teens would consider the latter to be the more credible authority on the matter.
