I needed every single one of these asides, I needed every question, I needed every challenge, I needed every counter-argument, I needed every second (and hour) of these discussions. Thank you to everyone who came together to record this incredible conversation. This is a gift of the modern era, for all of the other evils it is often correctly charged with. This kind of education would never have been accessible to someone of my birth in just about any other era on any continent.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dr. Ritner. Whatever Gee says, it very much matters to people like me that you've given us this gift. To those of us brought up with the idea, supported by people we thought we could trust like Gee, Nibley, etc. - that this document was legitimate and a testament to our church founder. I mean, we based our whole lives on this idea and made major life decisions based on this trust in founding narratives and artifacts like the BoA. Thank you for this wonderful gift of helping us understand what we could not have understood without your help. Thank you for your honorable representation of your profession and helping us see the scholarship of our apologists for what it really is. Truth is everything. And you are the teacher we needed. Thank you!

This is a sensational series of interviews! It was the Book of Abraham which I spent the vast amount of my apologetic time when I was using Nibley's materials for the most part. Ritner has completely eviscerated everything I thought I knew from following Nibley, Gee, and Muhlestein. It's game over. Egyptologists win. I believe in evidence, and have changed my mind based on that that I was wrong as an apologist. This is impressive honesty which LDS apologetics have simply thrown out.

The deception is what gets me. It's not so much that this isn't right, or that this happened, or this didn't happen. But the obfuscation, whitewashing, hiding, gaslighting, straight up lying . . . that's what's driven the nails into the coffin of Mormonism for me. The more I learn, the further I get from ever going back. When I was a member, for well over 45 years, I didn't see the harm done by TSCC. Now I can't quit seeing it. Dr Ritner, you're awesome, and swinging one hell of a hammer. Thank you. Thank you John Dehlin, and RFM for taking the time to do this. Of course if you're a devout believer, you could just say "the so called experts". But that's as dishonest as you can get.

John, your 'Soapbox' thoughts are spot on. The church has destroyed too many lives with its deceptive teachings. I gave sixty years of my life to it and I was 100% in, before I discovered the truth and resigned four years ago. And now I'm left trying to pick up the pieces of my life. The regrets of what I could have done with my life are sometimes unbearable, especially when it comes to the regrets of raising my children in the church and the damage it has done to them. I have no room in my heart for progressive Mormonism, the church has destroyed lives for nearly two centuries.

I too gave over 40 years of my life to the Mormon church, and am no longer a member. I have come to the conclusion that all religions are human animal constructs, and if someone wants to remain a practicing Mormon, or any other religion, there is some benefit to be obtained from doing so. However, I can no longer sit in a Mormon church meeting and sing "Praise to the Man", or go along with the fraud that Joseph Smith perpetuated. I feel as if a huge weight has been lifted from me, and am enjoying a freedom of thought and feeling that I never had as a TBM. There IS life after Mormonism!

I was a Mormon teen in the 60s and early 70s. My dad was a Mormon racist. The Book of Abraham where I lived in Montana was extremely popular among racists. The Mormons backed off some since then, but racism is still doctrine from the Book of Abraham. That is the main reason I won't vote for a known Mormon until they publicly repudiate the Book of Abraham. If I’m in a dream and it turns out the Book of Abraham is true, I’m going to Hell because I will not worship a god that is such a racist.

Absolutely awesome interview! It took me four days, but I finished watching it all. Not only is Dr. Ritner a Goliath of Egyptology, and a rockstar among his peers, he is also a man of the utmost integrity, and a genuine gentleman. If the BYU and church hierarchy had an ounce of Ritner's honesty, this whole topic of the BOA would have been put to rest over a 150 years ago. His credentials are absolutely astonishing, and I found it intriguing just to listen to him speak about which topic he is so passionate. To be the best, or in the top 5 best in the world at anything is remarkable, be it basketball, ballet, underwater basket weaving, or Egyptology. I sincerely hope this man will find his kidney (if he hasn't done so already), and stay healthy long into the future.

As a life long Episcopalian, I was not expecting to hear my church mentioned in this (mostly because it’s not usually one of the major Christian denominations making headlines), but the more I think about it, the more the idea of this bishop going to Egyptologists for answers tracks with my experience with the Episcopal Church. The priest I had while growing up liked to discuss the cultural/historical aspects of the bible in his sermons and always encouraged anyone who had questions about the bible/doctrine to discuss them with him, and the church my aunt and uncle attend had a framed picture in their Fellowship Hall that said something along the lines of “Jesus died to take away your sins, not your mind” 😂

One thing I was hoping these podcasts would talk about (and forgive me if it was and I missed it) was the Anthon Transcript. When Dr. Ritner said that knowledge gleaned from the Rosetta Stone was known only in Europe in the early 1820's, and no one here in America would have been privy to that knowledge, how was it that people such as Charles Anthon could've been considered an authority on Egyptian symbols? How would he know if the figures that Martin Harris showed him were authentic or not? And why wasn't the knowledge brought to America in those days after 1822 when the code was cracked? Surely there were people on ships coming across the Atlantic with some rudimentary understanding of what work had been going on?

I'm so impressed by Dr Ritner! Truly a journey..if I may ask, Dr Ritner, have you noticed and similarities with the teachings of jesus and Osiris?? During the last super, jesus talked about a kennel must fall and die to bring forth good works. (Which reminded me of osiris)

I'm so glad to have Dr. Ritner's words and expertise on this subject, it's endlessly fascinating. At one time it would have seemed like a waste of time, but due to his curiosity and honest investigation, he discovered a snapshot of a lost piece of ancient art. However, the immense amount of work he had to do to unravel Joseph Smith's pile of made up junk is also really impressive. Especially considering how little he had to work with due to the church's attempts to bury the information. Grateful for this man's life and these wonderful interviews.

LDS "scholarship". You just can't trust scholarship that's published only in LDS apologetics journals without peer review. Gee gave the game away when he rejected peer review. Peer review frustrates him because he is focused on apologetics.

Is there any additional way to make it known to the people that Dr. Ritner needs a kidney? This video has only 15 000 views, I guess it is not enough to find potential donors...

Ok. So I just finished watching this and the other 2 parts. I should probably leave my comment on part 2 as per the point I want to bring up. First of all I'd like to say that this is where I got the clarification on the other "lion couch documents" lds apologists use, as per mentioned in part one. I'd like to pull an RFM here and try to award Joseph Smith on the men becoming gods and plurality of Gods in the sense of Dr. Ritner's explanation of what the book of the dead or the book of breathings is all about. It could be loosely reconsiled that Joseph Smith hit the head on the nail theologically about resurrection and judgement, although many religions have these ideas. And the point was made that christianity probably inherited these concepts. I'd like to see Dr. Rintner's response to the claims of Zeitgeist the movie. A lot of college students were watching that back in 2008ish. But in any case let's give Joseph Smith a 0.5 on the King Follett discourse and the parallels with the Egyptian understanding of the afterlife in part 2 and peace out.

I appreciate the content, But John, this DRAGGED. You and rfm constantly made Dr. Ritner repeat himself over and over. This was very frustrating to listen to. John, you need to stop asking after every point if someone has anything else to add and just let the conversation flow into the next topic. .

Have you considered that the reason to cut off/destroy noses was to further the idea that Egyptians were Caucasoid rather than Negroid? These were BLACK people!
@xyz7572
@xyz7572 Жыл бұрын
The nose/snout was cut off of the god Anubis (who has black fur and the head of a jackal), for the simple reason that there is no jackal-headed saint or deity in Christian tradition so having his image remain untouched would have led to questions. You can still see remainder of the snout and teeth on the copper plate, where the person who cut it away didn’t fully remove it but just hacked at it enough to stop it from making an imprint when the plate was used as a stamp. And FYI, Egyptians aren’t black. All Africans don’t look like black Americans. The American concept of black and white and Asian and Latino as distinct groups is very stilted and doesn’t reflect the real world outside of the US. African doesn’t equate “black”. Egyptians don’t look anything like the people of for example Zimbabwe or Somalia. Americans have bashed several actors in mummy movies for “being white people pretending to be Africans” even though they’re actually Egyptian actors, just because Egyptians don’t look the way Americans think African people should look like.
