I am neurodivergent (multiple-diagnosis as an adult) and I've never heard OCD explained this way, and I relate so much. I've had periods where my mental health was less balanced than it is now, and I fully believe after watching this that my anxiety showed up as OCD. There were times where I couldn't sleep because I was sure I would hurt myself or others while sleep walking - even though I wasn't a sleep walker.

I always thought it was weird when one person in a couple talks for the other one. But when i watch these two wonderful people do it....IDK it feels like they just have a great understanding of each other, beyond religious ideologies. So when one cannot voice a feeling or remember a moment, the other is there to pick it up.

I was completely engulfed in this couples story & came here to continue listening to part 3 right away, as if the first 5hrs wasn’t enough! Haha. So I’ll be back tomorrow for the ending of this portion of their story! 💜💜 Thank you for creating such a wonderful safe environment where people feel accepted & supported by you & your community. I’m sure these are incredibly difficult conversations to have, but I’m willing to bet that once they tell their story & the conversation comes to an end, they are able to walk through life feeling lighter. Providing a space where your guests feel comfortable enough to share their experiences, almost all that are riddled with trauma & years of shame is invaluable!

Your children are so lucky to have parents so informed on the best practices for marriage & families. Also, Josh the way you talked about being a girl dad made my heart feel full & my eyes well up! You seem to be such a strong yet calming presence in your home. You 2 seem to make a wonderful team, which is the best thing any couple, family can even hope for. Your girls will grow up feeling safe to talk to you both, safe to ask questions and safe to be part of your family unit. I find the hardest part of most religions is if things go right in your life, it’s God’s gift to you and if they go wrong, it’s all your fault. You never get credit for the win, and always get the blame for the loss. True in Mormon, Catholic, even Scientology. No wonder you are left with no confidence in yourself. You are winners and survivors. So much credit to you both!

I am so deeply touched by this couple and their story. When I was in my 20s and had two kids, we were extremely involved in our church. I didn't get help for my anxiety, depression, & panic attacks that entire decade because of my beliefs around medication and mental health treatment. Even medication the doctors had me on for blood pressure during my second pregnancy, the pastor and ladies at my church would make negative comments about. (I worked there at the time). 5 years in therapy and treatment later, my husband and myself are still trying to reconcile what religion took from us as individuals, as a couple and as a family. Thank you for sharing your story ❤

It really is terrifying! And while I never had a formal diagnosis of postpartum psychosis (probably because I withheld my actual thoughts with my psychiatrist), I definitely relate to that diagnosis. It's absolutely terrifying what it can do to your mind. That coupled with a high-demand religion that expects perfection, is incredibly isolating.

My father grew up in a strict mormon family, but my mother didn't. Each had trauma. I grew up in Utah, and there were not many families that weren't mormon, so it was very confusing. All of my friends came from strict mormon families, but I wasn't raised in the same environment. I obviously was baptized at 8 because that is what every 8 year old did, but at the same time, the baptism and confirmation felt shameful because my father wasn't the person to baptize and confirm. I wanted to fit in with friends so I tried as a youth to attend church, primary then young women's. The things I learned at church told me my family wouldn't be together in heaven, but it didn't make any sense because I was doing what I was taught, I was fulfilling all of my callings but because things outside of my control, even though I was trying to be faithful and good, my parents did not go to church and were not sealed...I was not good enough to be able to be with my family in heaven. Then my father died. I was sad and angry. Now, 50 plus years later, I'm coming to terms with all of the contradictions. I am such an inclusive person, and the church and it's members are very much exclusive. If you do not embody all of it, there is no room for you. I choose to always have room and a plate for everyone at my table. I will never fit into that box, and that's okay with me.

I have continued to believe and have a relationship with my Heavenly Father. I really have deep generational beliefs that I’ve tried to undo. I have lost the position in my original family, and my7 children and 22 grandchildren. I only have God. I’m married over 30 years to a non Mormon, but a believer. …so for the first time since my deconstruction I have looked at my marriage as real! All this time, thinking that since it wasn’t a temple marriage, it doesn’t count.

I have so much love for them both. Serious couple goals. I’m so struck how they’ve found the unconditional love and support in eachother that a church is supposed to provide. I’m so grateful they have eachother and so grateful their kids have them as parents.

I'm a girl on the spectrum who also suffered with purely obsessional OCD for many years. Although my intrusive thoughts were not of a religious nature (my family is not at all religious) I related SO much to your story. It's been years since I've had those thoughts and I consider them mostly behind me. There is hope and good mental health is possible. I'm so glad that neurodivergence is being more openly talked about as it helped me finally realize that there was nothing "wrong" with me, just that my mind was made differently. I love seeing a successful and well spoken woman on the spectrum around my age.

Although their faith transition was difficult for them at a young age, they are lucky that they can raise their children in a much healthier way. I have many regrets for ways I parented but all I can do is apologize for mistakes, forgive myself and do better now that I know better. I love this quote: “No amount of regret changes the past. No amount of anxiety changes the future. But any amount of Gratitude changes the present.” I’m grateful I have a chance to live an new authentic life outside of the church.

I watched all 3 episodes. I saw the thumbnail for the first episode and recognized her right away. I sometimes watch her youtube channel for crafting inspiration. I had no idea about all she had gone through. I have family members who deal with OCD so my heart goes out to her. Having had my own faith deconstruction, I could relate to much of their story. Their kindness towards each other was so heartwarming to watch. I wish them nothing but the best for their future.

So much empathy for these wonderful & brave people. Especially the post partum OCD & dissociation. I was southern baptist, and it really hurt to feel you’re just a bad mom & if you prayed enough, it would go away. That’s how I wound up being super productive and not remembering how. Please accept this huge hug. ❤

Josh and Kim, thank you for sharing your story. I am not LDS but so many things you went through are universally relatable. So many women suffer with postpartum depression in silence, lacking support from their loved ones. You have overcome so much in your relationship. And after being raised in high demand religion, you found more tolerance, compassion and honesty in yourself than many people do. I admire your strive to be better, emphatic people. Good luck to you.

Kim you are so strong and brave for seeking help and figuring out what you were/are dealing with in having OCD. OCD is torture and unfortunately the dogma and shame and cultural beliefs that are so powerful in Mormonism create an unsafe space for those who have OCD. Thank you for so vulnerably and clearly expressing how that is true. I just want you to know this is not something that only exists for Utah mormons but for mormons (and quite honestly most faith communities) everywhere. Please take care after this interview. You did something important in fighting stigma today ❤️
