No one but her could have made the role in "The Rose" what it was and that's why I agree with you she should have won the Oscar. Unfortunately, too many Academy voters at the time thought she was just playing herself and couldn't see beyond Midler's real life persona and the role she created on screen. One of my favorite films and way, WAY ahead of it's time.

@@beaellie9766 you are not kidding, she needs to get an Oscar, she is the most emotional actor I have ever watched, real feelings, she works hard, she was robbed of it, I would love to see her get it, how would we help her.
@wylier3 жыл бұрын
@@beaellie9766 well, Bette's role was actually modeled after Janis Joplin. The only bit that was 'autobiographical' was the scene set in that male bathhouse (as bette routinely did shows in NYC's gay bathhouses). Sally Field won just about every award for Best Actress that year (for "Norma Rae"), so it was clearly her year.

Very few people on live TV can go from racy comments to being on the verge of tears thanking their parents. Re the Oscars, have you seen Norma Rae? Sally deserved it; if it were a weaker year and if the studio had hyped up the drama aspect then Bette would have won.
@alicehenderson79832 жыл бұрын
Frank D, they still cheated her out of it, I have the movie, & she was extremely emotional in it, I have never in my life seen someone that can cry so easily in a movie, she is the best actress in my lifetime, period, I wish I had a replica of an Oscar, I would give it to her, with her name on it, with the title of the movie with her name in Gold

Rules must have changed. THE ROSE was considered a musical/comedy wheras BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY was a drama !!!!
@wylier3 жыл бұрын
I think the producers of the movies decide which category to promote them for. Since 'Bohemian Rhapsody' actually won the Globe for Best Drama that year, that risk clearly paid off for it's producers. I dont think "The Rose" would have stood a chance against "Kramer vs. Kramer" at the globes, if they had been going head to head.
@michaelmuldowney83 жыл бұрын
@@wylier Good points. Its hard often to categorize although maybe Golden Globes were never the best guide. They gave THE MARTIAN the award for best comedy/musical film ?? WTF.
