Interesting walk on a beautiful morning. Most of us just plan going and coming back without much thought about the coming back home part. We are all told by the National Weather Service about being prepared with a winter safety kit while traveling but not much is ever said about being prepared for a hike to get home- Winter or Summer. We all should all be more prepared.

I'm greatful my husband and I work only a mile away from home. Every time we leave on an out-of-town trip, I always consider how long it would take us to get home. I don't like leaving town unless I have to go.

Great tips! Currently i'm fortunate to be working from home, but when i was previously working on-site, about 12-15 miles from home, the location was adjacent to a rail line. My plan was to travel along the rail line to stay off of the major highway which was really the only road to get me to & from home. I also made sure that my husband knew that was the route i would be taking. I always had my get home pack with me in my office & a hiking pole, good walking shoes, change of clothes etc. in my vehicle. The other part of the plan was timing. I let my husband know that depending upon the time of day the SHTF, i would either start out right away if it was before noon, but if it was much later than that, i would plan to crash in my office & set out first thing the following morning. Making sure that any family members waiting at home know your plan & your route & any contingencies so that they know when or if to worry about when you should have been home will help to make sure that everyone is on the same page. All of our adult kids have plans to get to our house in case of an event as well.

Very good topic. I'm about 30 mi from work. I've looked at various routes to get home. Need to put a bit more thought on crossing the river if the bridges are taken out. I have identified some shallows but after a rain/snow melt/winter it becomes a bit more complex.

Fellow Kansas City guy here! Although I’m guessing you’re not there anymore, that doesn’t look like any part of KC I’ve ever seen 😆Nice video sir.

That does pose interesting and varied problems to getting home, doesn't it?
