"never the situation but your thoughts about it" - Wonder what Fritzl's daughter would say about that? Some situations are appalling and horrific and it's not a person's thoughts that make them so.

Tolle doesn't deny that there are terrible things and difficult situations in the world. He just counsels that once you accept the is of what is, you can then decide to deal with your situation and face it head on. Clearly there are examples where life is very, very hard and the present moment is horrific. That doesn't mean Tolle's teaching is wrong. It is hard to accept the now, most of us fail to do it when most of our issues and anxieties are purely self made.

Realizing that I am not my thoughts - that I don't need to listen to them, that I can simply observe them - is one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. My mind used to keep me miserable, worried, angry - every single day. After practicing Eckhart's teachings I now only feel that way sometimes, and even then I have a way out. I now realize that I create my own suffering, and that I can stop doing this any time I choose. I can accept this very moment as it is and stop producing needless suffering. The past has loads of regret, resentment. The future holds so much fear, worry. But Now everything is OK. And Now IS everything.

Eckhardt, spirituality was not in my lexicon. At 46 years of age, after many, many years of intense and constant suffering caused by my own poor choices, intense anxiety that is deep on both sides of my family (mom and dad) I was drawn to a Pinterest article over and over your name appeared. I read a couple beautiful quotes and was intrigued… but I had no clue what you were referring to. About 6 months after seeing your name on Pinterest I was in a book store and went looking for the “spiritual “ section and found The Power of Now. That night I was alone in my home and I was peaceful with yoyr book… about page 65 or so I began walking aroma home and had a spontaneous awakening experience… it was the most beautiful and precious gift of my life. It’s been deepening ever since October of last year🙏🏽. I can literally “see” the present moment or the space that is full of breathtaking aliveness… at will. You saved my life and I have no way to properly thank you ever. Warmest Regards, Tiffany
