Part 5: • Morris Day on Prince F...
Part 1: • Morris Day on Joining ...
In this clip, Morris Day detailed making the classic film, 'Purple Rain' and explained why he characterized the initial process as chaotic. Morris Day also talked about his role as the villain in the film was loosely based on the competitive tension that existed between him and Prince.
Later on, Morris Day talked about only making $50,000 from the movie and how his smash hit "Jungle Love" was left off the soundtrack.

@@behavioristbusiness7372 I know they had their differences and were very young, but Morris has a bit of an ego & attitude problem in those days. He let is slip out when he said that Prince was having them do stupid stuff like acting & dancing lessons. This movie was a risky move for Prince, it could have sunk his whole career if the movie bombed. He wasn't a huge star yet when this movie was made. Morris didn't even show up during filming because he was partying all night, Alan Leeds was sent out to find him. How much money does it cost to have a film crew sitting around because the co-star can't bother to show up? That said, I do love Morris - the Time is a great band. However, I don't think Morris would have a career in music if it wasn't for Prince's guidance and songwriing abilities.

I can’t help but notice, that every time I hear someone speak on Prince. Whether it’s good or bad. They’re careful and they always say the same thing. Even when he was alive. There’s this certain level of respect, even if they really didn’t get along with him. Think about it for a second. MD could’ve easily bashed him. But he didn’t, which speaks volumes about the level of respect he has for Prince. Great interview Vlad.

Prince would have people he worked with sign NDA’s, so if they revealed anything he didn’t like then he would sue them. Some of the Revolution members talked about this like wendy and lisa. So that’s why they were carful about what they said about him.

Peggy McCreary spent 18 hours a day in the studio with Prince: www.ilikeyouroldstuff.com/news/inside-the-recording-of-prince-originals-album-peggy-mccreary “When you spend 18 hours a day with someone you’d think there would be a little conversation, but there wasn’t that much with Prince. It wasn’t like working with a band, because I’ve worked with tonnes of bands and you get to know them, socialise a bit and go out with them for lunch every now and then. There was none of that with Prince, it was just work. There was no ‘Good morning’, there was no ‘How was your day?’, there was no ‘Good night, I’ll see you tomorrow’. He’d never want to eat, but one time I said I was going to order some food. He said, ‘You just want me to eat so I’ll get sleepy and go home!’. I said, ‘No, actually I’m just hungry!’. He’d exist on coffee and Vicks cough drops, but sometimes I’d feed him. There was one really great soul food place I could send somebody out for and once in a while he’d eat from there, but he didn’t like to eat.”

That's actually what Morris book was pretty much called. Unfortunately he doesn't tell Prince's actual story. David Z does a better job of speaking about the demo that got him signed to Warner Bros. because he recorded it personally. He speaks about it here, including how Prince played all the instruments. David Z (from 11:20) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWiph4yObNmar5o Prince can't speak anymore, but fortunately some care about his legacy, genius, and decades of music supporting people in their lives. Chris Moon hired Prince at Moonsound after working with Champagne, he speaks at length about Prince here, including teaching him studio craft, how to make his own demos, contacting Owen Husney who helped Prince get his record deal. Here’s a bit of trivia: Richard Pryor’s short lived production company Indigo productions got the script for Purple Rain b4 anyone. Jim Brown who was Vice President presented it to Pryor. Pryor didn’t know who Prince was and rejected the project. It went to another studio and the rest is history.

It was a risk. He believed in his vision. Plus I heard there was more to the story. $50,000 is a little low to support a whole band though. ( I knew one of the trumpet players) James Brown took all the risks, so he deserved the lions' share of money. However, when you left the band and could put " James Brown Band " on your resume', doors would open. …...Bootsy Collins will testify to that. He didn't like James Brown, but without being in that band, nobody would ever had heard of him and Funkadelic would have never picked him up. Morris Day swallowed his pride and is STILL getting paid for that sacrifice. Even to this day. He's smart.

@Anthony Clark - Pretty much the way I read it, the studio did not think the movie was going to do well, so all the things like archiving deleted scenes pretty much went into the trash once the final cut was completed. Yes, later (for film editing) studios changed that practice, because they began to realize that maybe a reissue of a movie might cause a failed movie or one that grossed below expectations, to get a second chance. But for Purple Rain, what we see is all that's left.
