A 'Mustie 1' tip is to use a broken piece of the old ring to clean out the ring groove.

Great tip👍 thanks Victor5801, guaranteed to be the right width for the piston groove then 🤔 nice one !!👍😉😎

Grind the old ring to a taper and Grind a little bit off one side of the ring and use it both ways around the pistons

Brilliant! As an owner of an Austin A60 (yes, I know, it's not a Morris but I have owned a Morris in the past so hope that absolves me 😄) I love the simplicity and ruggedness of a pushrod 4 cylinder engine of this vintage. This has been a binge watch series for me and am looking forward to more. Love it. What wonderful trucks these are. 😊✔

Hi there Pauline 😀, you are completely absolved 😂, love Austin’s myself so no shame in that and as you would know many Austin’s share parts with the Morris brand so it’s really just one big happy family. Yes 100% on the engine design, simple is the name of the game and built at a time when practically anyone could open the owners manual and find all the information they needed to fix most basic issues… bit different to today’s cars for sure😂 glad you are enjoying the episodes, I never really thought it would get to +10 episodes but here we are 👍 with more to come…. Thankyou for leaving a comment and glad to have you with me on the journey- kindest regards JC 👍😉

@@morrislcrescue Thank you. Your videos are very accessible and informative. I feel proud to own and drive my Austin. It's fully registered and I use it as often as I can except if it's raining, which as you know, seems to have been going on for years in Melbourne too. 😊

Hello. I'm enjoying the videos showing the Morris engine job. I think the cylinders are stamped .0005 which is just half a thou over. I'd say that was the factory grading when it was built. Often pistons will be graded to suit the cylinders on assembly. I'd be surprised a rebuilder would stamp them as tidy as that. I have done similar jobs on Ford flathead V8s and know exactly what these jobs are like. I bought and repaired a cylinder boring machine and have used it on some of my engines. I have shown it in some of my videos. All the best, Mart in England.
@morrislcrescue2 жыл бұрын
Gidday Mart, thanks for the information mate, yep now that you mention it those .0005’s are stamped rather neatly so that’s definitely a possibility although this is the first time in 6 of the same engines I’d come across this 🤔 You hooked me in now Mart as I’ll need to tune in and watch you use the cylinder bore… good on you for getting it going again to, a man of many talents 👍 appreciate you tuning in and sharing your experiences… kindest regards JC👍😉

Great to hear it run. It's good that you have spare parts stashed. Always a necessity on these old 'uns. Funny enough, I have a torque wrench like that. What a good quality Aussie torque wrench was doing on a table at a UK autojumble is a mystery. Absolute bargain at £2! When I was doing my apprenticeship in the 1970s I worked with older guys that used to work at "Morris Commercial". Mart in England.

Gidday Mart, yep similar story my end mate… long story short it cost me considerably more to have it recalibrated and checked than what I paid for it ( at a local flea market)but I didn’t mind as it gets used every day and as you said the quality is there 👍 can never have too many “ spare parts” 😂😂😂 . It would be great to have acces to some of the knowledge and stories those old fellas must of had, lucky you had the chance to get an insight into that history. All the best mate JC 👍😉

Alan Gander, those markings on the block, 0.0005 are actually the markings put in by the machine shop when they did the rebore each cylinder is half a thousands of an inch oversize. So they mark the block in order to inform the rebuild-er.

Thankyou so much for your kind words Phillip, a major motivation for me with Morris LC Rescue is to try and encourage more youngsters to become involved in recovering and repairing these old vintage cars and trucks. A key part of that is attempting repairs on a budget, not always possible but doesn’t mean we stop trying😂…. every days a school day for me mate so any chance to repair or recycle and I’m in !!! Thankyou Ian, should be quite ok for the engine to run for very short periods with no radiator or coolant, I’ll definitely need to do a bit more work in the radiator department as her current one needs a few repairs before I can refit it. Good video, nice work. I enjoyed watching. I noticed you need a ring groove cleaner. I've had one for years but haven't used it in a long time. It takes the work out of the job, that and a ridge reamer for the top of the cylinder to remove the ridge left by wear.
@morrislcrescue2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Terry, really glad you enjoyed the content mate👍 I’ll add the ring groove cleaner to my Christmas wish list…. I do own/use a Lisley lip removal tool but hey there’s just another little mystery about this truck right there… for a tired old engine there was no obvious lip that I could feel on any of the cylinders??? Really strange considering the wear and tear in the rest of the motor 🤔 anyways everyone seems to want to see us move forward with repairs to Holly so that’s where we are heading… stay tuned, appreciate you comments and kindest regards 👍😉 JC

coil was right they were positive earth, like a lot o pommie stuff
@morrislcrescue2 жыл бұрын
Hi Gaz Ferg, I seem to always find a mix in these Australian LC3’s with some still the factory positive earth while most of mine have been converted to negative earth when an alternator is fitted…. At one stage Holly had been converted to run a two wire alternator instead of the generator and was definitely negative earth as they ran an old 27mhz two way for their farm, but… when the alternator failed they then tried to convert it back to pos earth so they could use the old generator again, don’t think the truck ever ran again after that 🤔 you might be able to tell in some of the footage the poor old wiring harness has been chopped and changed just a few times 😂 I’ll push on with it as negative earth for now and will likely install an alternator if it comes to that 👍 appreciate the pickup mate and glad you left a comment- kindest regards JC👍😉

im sorry but you keep confusing me by saying if you were doing this properly. So what is the point of you doing all this then if at some point its going to have to be stripped down again for it to be done properly. Im sorry if i sound harsh but im trying to understand your logic. Id like to see it restored and driving
@morrislcrescue2 жыл бұрын
Gidday Chris, Really great to have you join the channel , Thankyou 👍Not a harsh comment at all mate…The simple answer is that this truck is still very much a gamble. Even after five previous full restorations on this model I still tend to access them as a whole to determine if / where the $$$ are best spent… with Holly it’s the challenge of taking what others considered scrap and getting her to run again. As Holly sits atm she’s unfortunately very typical of how you find them after years of neglect and being left to the elements. If I could choose to promote just one thing on the channel it would be to encourage more viewers to do as MUCH as they can with a MINIMUM of $$$. Ultimately if more folks feel comfortable recovering some of these old relics and attempting repairs then for me that’s a win . Kindest regards JC 👍😉😎
