Surprisingly I actually like Raiden's fatality better on the SNES version. The way the skull falls into the ash pile is still pretty brutal and it helps differentiated it from Johnny Cage's head uppercut

I actually kind of prefer these to modern fatalities. They’re quick and to the point rather than the drawn out exercise in traumatizing your animation team that the new ones are. 1-3 definitely has peak fatalities

You're absolutely right. One of my biggest gripes with modern fatalities are that so many of them are showcasing fighters clearly maiming an already dead opponent for the sake of spectacle. It doesn't make sense for many characters to be doing that at all.

Raiden's fatality is pretty sweet, particularly when done after teleporting from across the screen. Liu Kang's fatality on the pit stage probably gets the slight edge overall, but Raiden's is otherwise the best everywhere else. I used Raiden's teleport first before the fatality and it always got the oohs and ahs from the crowd lol.

Back when this 1st came out, my brother and I knew about "blood mode" to enable blood, but we didn't know about fatalities, so when the screen turned dark and Sub Zero ripped my head off, bringing my spinal column with it, our mouths dropped in awe. We had no idea what just happened, but we thought that was the coolest thing we've ever seen, and it was all by accident just mashing buttons. IIRC gaming magazines had some 'how to' guides so we borrowed some from the library and tried to get every fatality, was so cool to us young'ens.

I find it weird that the creator here didn't turn on the blood on the Genesis version... when showing fatalities. It would be AWESOME if they showed BOTH the non-blood fatalities and then showed the versions with the blood as well as... now that I think about it.. even though I've played the Genesis version literally thousands of times I'm not sure I've ever did ANY of the fatalities without the blood code on. The ZombieMan I don’t know if it’s true, but when it was a kid the rumor was that Liu Kang didn’t kill people in the first one because he was above that or to much of a good guy. People didn’t like it though since fatalities were like the coolest thing about characters. It sucked cause Liu Kang was such a badass and the best character in the game, but his fatality sucked. I was always a Sub-Zero guy. From the first time I ripped someone’s head off with the spine attached I’ve like him. Raiden has always been a close second

It isn't a rumor, it's canon in the main story that Liu Kang won't kill anyone because he's representing the Shaolin Monks in the tournament. The Shaolin Monks are peaceful.

Apparently as long as there is no blood or dismemberment, everything is OK. (See Sonya's and Scorpion's Fatalities). But you can easily be cruelly burned alive into a crispy skeleton. This is allowed on all consoles. But as soon as the red color comes into play, the fun suddenly stops in Europe and the Sega Genesis... makes no sense.

So let me get this straight... Rayden's fatality was changed from blowing up the opponent's head to turning him into ashes and a skull in the SNES version. And the SNES version is censored. Who thought that was a good idea? Heck, the censored Genesis version looks significantly tamer.

People complain that the SNES version was censored. Honestly, it really wasn't that big of a deal. Liu Kang, Sonya, and Scorpion all kept their fatalities that they had in the arcade. Sub Zero's SNES fatality is actually more apt for his character, and keep in mind, his SNES fatality was actually given to him in MK2. Rayden's and Cage's SNES fatalities may not contain blood, but turning someone into ashes and impaling them with your foot are equally gruesome, and both those fatalities ended up in future MK games (MK vs DC and MKX as a brutality for Bo Rai Cho for Raiden, and Shaolin Monks for Cage) and Kano's is really the only one that's censored, but to be fair, we know what he's doing in it.

I too have absolutely no problem with the altered fatalities in Super Nintendo Mortal Kombat 1. Though mostly bloodless, I felt they still worked & had potential for future games. We're probably a minority when it comes to the fatalities in the Super Nintendo version. All I mostly see/hear are negative comments about them.

I agree....While I prefer the Arcade and Genesis ports of MK1, I do have a soft spot for the SNES version (due to it being the main version I played as a kid, although I played the former two as well). I think Raiden and Sub-Zero’s fatalities were cooler than the originals.

Agreed. They did a good job thinking of creative new ideas for the censored SNES version. The Genesis version's fatalities (without blood code) are pretty half-assed. Johnny Cage simply "kicks away" the opponent and Sub-Zero just uppercuts him.

Listen to the Kano fatality in the SNES as well. You can STILL hear the first heart beat in it. That and who knows what part of his foes body he ripped out, could be the lungs!
