From what I've heard, they specifically avoided having Johnny Cage, cause having a new OC to replace the primary character of the series makes things "better" according to certain people who want to shove their OCs in various franchises. Which of course kinda makes the whole things bleh, especially since if I recall, Mortal Kombat wouldn't have happened without Johnny Cage, since the game was originally suppose to be a Jean-Claude Van Damme game with Johnny Cage originally suppose to be Jean-Claude Van Damme.
