Are you kidding me? If they really cared about the source material, they wouldn've have skipped straight over MK 2's storyline and went straight to MK 3. They also would've kept Jade black instead of asian, wouldn't have had Raiden become mortal--as never happened in the games--and Rain wouldn't have been such a little bitch.

As a sequel, I don't think it's great, but it has enough to entertain MK fans thanks to some fun fight scenes.
